i dont collect or follow the '72 set very much, but i just noticed "making_the_grade" (a 4_sharp account) listed some psa 9's with $10 Buy-it-now prices.. i dunno if thats a good deal or not..

Think 4SC will end up relisting there stuff with a cheap BIN if a card does not sell, usually those that are not the best centered but still get the 9 grade.

Dave is within striking distance of finishing off the set!

How did you get the Aaron, Dave?

Good luck for the last two!

By the way, Dave and I made a deal that was too hard for me to pass up and he acquired 5 of the last 8 that he needed from me. The main players dealt were the McCrae IA going Dave's way and the Blue comin' my way. It was REALLY hard for me to deal the McCrae, but Dave made me a fair offer and I had to accept.

On the flip side, you got yourself a great card with that McCrae IA along with the Morgan TR, Bench IA, Santorini & Maz Hi #. So, all in all, a good deal for the both of us!

By the way, I've got a total of 25 PSA 9s in my set and I'm looking to 'downgrade' those to 8s. I want a straight eight set and am looking for either cash or cards that I need to complete the set as compensation.

Any takers? If so, just drop me an e-mail at SCMAuctions@aol.com or PM me here on the boards.

It was a year ago today that I made the crazy decision to go for a graded 72 set and put the 47 graded cards I owned into the set registry I set myself low and reasonable goals. (65% complete after one year!)............

....I certainly have come a long way in the year; (maybe not as far as our friend Barkus image)........have spent more money than I had expected, (I haven't paid too much.....just spent too much)......but I have enjoyed ALMOST every minute. (one bad EBAY transaction on a Johhny bench card that never came).

I have met some fine folks along the way..........

Will finish the set hopefully in the next few months........unofficially 25 cards to go......(and three 7s to upgrade)

Dave, you're probably going to have to buy a few decent lookin' raw Montreal Expos team cards and submit them yourself. Has anyone tried with this card recently? Or, with the Reds rookie card? Are there any good reputable 'raw' card dealers out there that might have some?

By the way Jami, good luck on those final 25 cards! You are the person that got me started on this set and you sold me my first lot of like 10 to 12 cards if I remember correctly. So, thanks for that! Jami, why don't you list the final 25 cards that you need like Dave did and maybe you can get some folks to keep an eye out for you?

    Arny,

After the first of the year, when I have some more disposible income I plan on actively seeking the final (now 24) cards i need for my set including listing them here. I know for instance that Dave has five or six that I need and we will have to do some haggling. image

  • I'm more than happy to give up 5 or 6 to get the Expos Team Card image.

As it stands, between trades and sales, I am running out of my low pop inventory. A couple of guys who waited to buy low pops ended up being dissappointed because I already sold or traded the cards they need.

So, Maggio is out of the bidding on the '72s? $10K is a nice number....what is that compared to SMR?

Without Dave and Maggio, Jami and I might having a lot easier time trying to finish our sets. I'm already feeling the effects as I have picked up a couple of cards that have been hovering in the $100-200 range and have been picking them up in the $50-$100 range.

  • I think the 10 k Joe got for his set was decent. However, minus the ebay cut and whatever the consigner takes I'm certain that overall he lost on the deal (at least in monetary terms).
Joe was one of the more disciplined bidders, when the market for 8's was strong his bids usually topped out at a conservative 15.00 per card, he "overpayed" for very few cards.
The 10 k was a little bit of a surprise since Mike Castaldi's set had a similiar GPA and was at 100% sold for the same amount about a year ago.
I know Joe was picky about the cards he used for his set so I'm assuming the quality for the given grades was there. On the other hand Mike sets have always been famous for the very discriminating quality control standards.
I would say the time is now to build a 72 graded set, everytime a few players leave the fold the prices usually go down.

I am definitely enjoying the fact that we have a couple less big money guys buying up those harder to find ones. The disadvantage to that is the set loses a bit of steam with it as well with those guys off the market.

Dave, are you going to keep moving up the ranks? You are a few upgrades away from catching #3 all time! Go for it! Oh, and when you upgrade, keep us in mind for those 8s that you need to discard of image

    Arny,

In order for Dave to move up the list he would have to upgrade 23% of his cards..........that approx 180 cards!!!!

  • I don't want to perturb anyone with this comment, but I would imagine anyone who has a high grade set from the 70s, and auctions it off ... will lose money on their investment. Maybe not if they start the set now...but definitely for guys who started the set in the past 2-3 years. Prices are just softer due to supply and the decreased demand. Am I off base or is that about right?
  • you're right

After the first of the year when i am a little more fluid, I will make an all out effort to track down the cards I need. If i list them now and get to many offers I may not funds to pay for them since many are low pop cards.

I don't collect the set, but I am looking for nicely centered Aaron #299 in PSA 7-8 if anyone has an extra.

Jami, I was wondering about the same thing. Maggio keeps bidding and I'm not sure what he's doing with these cards.

Just wanted to mention that I got a note from the person that picked up the final four cards from the EOMint group that was sent to us '72ers.

I wanted to thank EO again for his generosity!

I could understand if this Oriole team card was low pop in PSA 9......but with a pop in 9 of over 30 that ending price is just WAY too much.

BEWARE of this auction. All of the cards are OC. Seller neglects to inform anywhere in the description.
