OT here...but i am very excited......so excuse my excitement..

Bob Gibson, Cardinal great and HOFer played golf at my home golf course ( for the second time this week) today and I was able to gather a few autographs. He was very gracious in autographing.......

Although I have two Gibson cards, one of which is his 59 Rookie card in raw ex-nr shape, ( the other of which is his encapsulated 72 card) I chose to have him autograph two of the back of my business cards............one of these autos will be sent to Knuckles to have him work his magic in making his"work Of Art" auto cards....

Thanks to Bob Gibson a fine gentleman....

MY GOD!! There is now over 850 EBAY listings of PSA graded 72 Topps......................far and away the most I have EVER seen at one time .

For anyone who wants to start or add to their PSA 8 72 set, NOW is the time............lots of opportunity for picking up cheap "8s" this week.

Jami, congrats on the Gibson auto's!

I was saying the same thing with the '72s on eBay right now...holy mackerol! You new guys...take advantage and jump on those cheap $5 opening bids because you'll probably be able to grab a vast majority of those! Jami, Maggio, BillNovick, Dave & I won't be touching most of those commons, so you'll get a good chunk of the set at the price of 'special' grading! Wow.

NOTE to a 1972 Registry collector:

I've been getting this message for the past several days:

Another member is attempting to add the following certification number to his/her set:

    40313087 1972 TOPPS CARL YASTRZEMSKI 37 (Baseball:1972 Topps-Dan Markel)

Assuming that you no longer own this item, please remove it from your set(s) and validate your set(s) as soon as possible.
Click here to login and delete the item from your set(s).

If you still own this item, please contact Set Registry Customer Service immediately.

    Thank you.

    Set Registry Customer Service

I have this card in my possession and it's in my set. I'd be curious if any of you are the ones trying to register it and if so, do you really have the card? I've replied back to PSA with a scan stating that I own this card and not to remove it from my set.

  • Options
I haven't tried to add a Yaz to my set since about the 10% completion mark. So, it's not my doing.

Hopefully it's not one of those cases where someone grabbed a scan from a pic that they saw and are trying to 'fake' their way up the ranks. image

It could be that someone just keeps typing in the incorrect number. Not sure, but if it's multiple times, I'd almost rule the 'mistake' excuse out.

    Dan,

PSA's computor system has some flaws...... or..........perhaps if the Yaz card was recently purchaced on EBAY someone took down the serial number.............................by sending them the scan, this issue will go away.

    Arny,

Sorry but last night, ( for the first time an a long time) I had to outbid you on a card. ( Ellis IA) image

18 cards to go..............( assuming that four cards that are long overdue have not been lost in the mail)

In the case of the Yaz card it could be someone adding a few cards at a time and transposing a number. If the group of cards were graded together they will probably have numbers that are very close to each other. I know I have done that a few times over the years.

It is amazing to me how many PSA 8 or better cards are currently on Ebay! The only problem is that I don't have a lot of spending capital right now image However, I will be low balling a bunch of PSA 8s and 9s. I just picked up 11 PSA 9s at about $15 each including shipping. I hadn't planned on picking up many PSA 9s; however, it is hard to pass them up in that price range.

    Regards,
    Mike
  • Options
Hey Mike, congrats on those 9s! Nice prices on those!

You know, I never thought of listing the prices that I paid for the cards in the comments section of the set registry. Sheesh...and me with all of these fancy spreadsheets.

Yup, picked up the Grand Daddy of the '72 set! Had to make the move on that one! I also picked up the Bob Gibson card, the Harrelson BH, R.Stone and the Padres & Red rookies. I think I got a decent deal on those five which makes up a little on having to overpay for the Aaron IA.

But, I'm happy overall! I believe that I've got 41 remaining now to complete the set once I add these to the set. image

    I had some 72s graded recently and pulled a 9 - #24 Ted Ford.

If anyone is interested in trading for it, please let me know - kenny98z11@yahoo.com
I'm willing to trade down to 8s.

Actually, come to think of it, I'm willing to trade other PSA 9s too, here is what I have:
    218 Eddie Kasko
    430 Bob Robertson IA
    461 Tim Cullen
    472 Phil Gagliano
    482 Joe Hoerner
    502 Jackie Hernandez
    551 Ollie Brown
    561 Leo Cardenas
    723 George Culver

I'm looking for 8s as replacements for these cards, as well as other 8s. Email me the 8s you have to trade, and lets see if we can work something out.

Its been a week without a post:

A number of new names in the set registry: any of you newbies out there feel free to post your trials and tribs of collecting this set here...............

Larry Emard who is just ahead of me tells me he is down to needing just one card (Expos team card) Aren't we all missing that one!!

It appears Dan Markel is selling off parts of his set as he has been dropping in the standings.

My "lost" package never arrived.......I am waiting on the insurance claim.

582 was the last one I needed to complete my set. I paid Bill Novick a lot of money and trade cards for his (although he has returned the favor by buying from me a lot of low pops he needed for his set).

I have a raw 582 that has a shot at an 8 and will be at least a 7. I am getting cards together for a very large submission, which I will probably submit in April. The 582 will likely be part of the group along with some other low pop raw 72s.

That's a nice Reggie Bri. Too bad that I already have it, or I would throw an offer at you on that one.

I've contacted a couple of '72 collectors and haven't been able to seal the deal on a trade. So, I will post this out there for all to see. I've got the Joe Morgan Traded card in PSA 9 that goes for around $250 or so. Now, I'm looking to have an all PSA 8 set, so I'm willing to deal this one or the Morgan 8 plus an additional card (or two image ) that I need for my set. If anyone is interested in this deal (or has another proposal such as some '57 Topps cards, etc) please e-mail me at SCMAuctions@aol.com or just drop me a PM.

By the way, I'm sorry that your package was lost Jami. With those tough cards (and at the decent deals that you got) it really must sting. Keep your head up!image

Thank you for mentioning that I returned the favor by purchasing cards from your store. You have THE best site for getting 1972 Topps cards anywhere on the internet that I have been able to locate. You gave me a deal that I couldn't refuse for that #582 card. However, that is one of the cards I need to complete MY set registry.Doesn't everybody need this card? I always wonder why these cards aren't priced differently in the PSA SMR.Also, why doesn't the SMR list prices for the 10's? If they asked a few of the top set registry guys like OUTER BANK YANK,or LMAYER,or ROBESM,or TROUT BUM,or SOX and CUBBIES,or MWKSPORTS,or BBCARD EXCHANGE,or ITZAGONER,or 4 CORNERS BASEBALL, READ,HORTON,OLENDER,GLIBERSCHER, IRWIN,BRYRICDYE,JAMI,ARNY, DAVE, and a few others(sorry if I missed you),I believe they would have a better listing than what they have now. Do the prices in the SMER ever change??? On to better things...I am closing in on Joe Maggio,Jami, and Arny.I still need a small bunch in the double digits.I have been trying to find the following and would be willing to help anyone upgrade their set,get two, three,or four for one, plus other incentives to find these: #5,39,93,133,144,228,230,296,524,532,582,708 and some other commons.HELP!HELP! HELP!Your help would be greatly appreciated.
  • Options
Nice to see you on the boards Bill!

Finally made it, I see! image

Well, I think that SMR is really out of whack when it comes to many sets. But, if you ask anyone what the price on a PSA 8 Hank Aaron IA, it certainly isn't worth $110 when the lowest I've seen the card go for the last year is $198. Same with the Schaal and many commons and minor stars in the set.

How/when does SMR update their prices? I've seen more modern stuff go up and down in value, but not the vintage stuff.

Hey Arny,Did you receive my email on an offer to trade??I missed Tbergh and lo and behold ,he is offering a #5 Bateman in PSA 8.Thanks for putting it up for bid!!Now if someone would only offer a #582,708,532,230,228,144,133,93,39???? Since this is the PSA Set Registry" official" forum, why doesn't PSA update some of the vintage card prices so it better refelects the current market??I realize prices and populations change, however, isn't that what the mag is supposed to do???The only thing I have seen change in the set are + and -.They have no listings for prices on tens???Why??? Many prices are out of whack? See #582,708,78,22,40,230,434,etc...???WHY??? Anybody have any reasons why they don't adjust it????

    Bill,

I have never studied ( or seen) the SMR values of PSA or anyone else for that matter........I may be wrong but I do no think the value of cards are based on PSA pop reports.

Isn't it true that all "commons" are equal in value depending on the series in the SMR values?

I do not think this will change anytime soon.

Cannot figure why my post did not show up..........(post #719)

So I will try it again.....

    Bill,

Glad to see you here in our thread...........

As far as SMR values go...........I do not think that PSA bases their common values on pop reports........I believe that all "commons" in a particular series have the same value...........

We all know that some commons are harder to get then others...........it ain't gonna change any time soon.................

<< <i>I don't know what is going on at 4SC, but had a package "lost in the mail" and I won a PSA 10 from them that they said was a mislisting. Have you seen proof that they shipped the cards? >>

I don't like 4SC, I don't trust 4SC, they have tooooo many seller ID's that helps them blend into any level of a buyers wallet AND I have bought one to many LEMONS from the jacka$$es. 4SC SUCKS.

In my humble opinion anyway image

4SC has too many ID's and sometimes on a given night you can win items from more then one ID and there is no combined shipping...................................this is my only complaint with them.

I do have a lost package with them now.......$178 worth of cards I so desparately need for my set.........THANKFULLY their is insurance, ( as there is with EVERY item that they ship) and I will get my money back...........Their customer service and responces have been first rate.....

No complaints from this many time buyer...........

I can tell you that with as many 'complaints' there are about 4SC, there are more 'praises' from me.

In particular, most of the cards that I've collected from my player set registry (and lots of commons cards for my sets) would not exist were it not for 4SC and their bulk submissions. Also, they will combine shipping for items under one ID even a week or two later. That's a big plus. Plus, they insure every package as well...another plus.

I've bought from them many a time and have never had a complaint!

Hi Jami, About the SMR from PSA...just got the latest issue today.Singles from 1-658 are @ $10 for a PSA 8 and $45.00 for a PSA 9.They don't list #22,for example, so according to them it's suggested value is around $10 for an 8,$45.00 for a PSA 9.An 8 went for $136.00 just a month ago.
They don't even list a #582 which should be around $10 for an 8.Anybody want to sell me some of th0se for $10.00??Even the money cards..
a PSA 9 Ryan for $450.00...And many difficult cards that many of us have paid triple digits for are not listed for more than $10 for a PSA...
NO listings for PSA 10's...So this 1972 Topps guide is pretty useless. You would think a major company could or would produce a more meaningful 1972 Topps PSA graded guide.Question is...WHY does PSA continue to put out the same BS every month, and nobody seems to take issue with it???
I suppose it's Who cares? All of us rookie beginners get taken until we know better...By the way,I started a new ebay store for just 1972 Topps graded cards. Some of you might want to check it out. It's under BILL'S CLASSICS and 1972 TOPPS PSA CARDS on Ebay's 1972 site!!

SMR is about as helpful as Beckett is or was. The best guide of all for me is following ebay sales. Average the cards out over a few months and you will weed out the low sales as well as the card that a person will bid any amount for their collection. You will also see a pattern on fellow collectors and what they are bidding on as well as sellers.

As far as the rest of SMR I am not sure I like the articles or not. It amazese me how many times a kid has collected high end sets that the normal working person cannot afford. It feels like a lifestyle of the rich and famous many times. (Hi I am Jimmy an 8 year old from Long Island that just replaced my 1952 PSA Mantle with a PSA 9. This completes by run of Topps Sets with Mantle. I have to go now because my neurosurgeon dad came home.)

I think you're making a mistake when you assume that the SMR is a "Price Guide." The SMR values are there so that you can determine the level of service required to have your card(s) graded and to calculate how much you need to pay for insurance on your return package. To treat the SMR like a price guide would be like Topps putting values on the new cards as they're released, which would really piss us all off!

As others have said, eBay sales represent the only true price guide in this market and unfortunately, they're way out of line because every single one of us seems willing to pay $150 for cards we wouldn't have given $2 for 10 years ago. I don't think Fred Kendall's stats have changed any in the past 25 years.

If we ever decide to sell these cards, we're guaranteed to lose money. Look at the Maury Wills IA and the Jerry Grote - those two were pushing $200 when I started building this set. Look at PSA 9 commons - $40-$50 each less than 2 years ago, $10-$20 now. It's my opinion that PSA-Graded cards become less rare every year - pop reports only move in one direction. Of course, that's only the supply side of the equation, but I think demand will wane too.

    Welcome to the boards Joe!

I think that SMR is viewed as a guide, but it's also an indicator of the market. It's called the Sports Market Report for a reason. Plus, the fact that there are up arrows and down arrows for cards means that there are some fluctuations of values to the cards. I'll be the first to admit that I haven't read the 'how to use this guide' portion of the SMR (if there's one), but if you see a card that consistently goes for double what your 'guide' states, then why not reflect an uptick in value for that card? I don't think that the Fred Kendall's and the Steve Dunning's in the world will have long term value, but a Hank Aaron IA card will never have a demand issue.

I personally would like to see some accurate adjustments (and this means dropping the prices as well based on supply vs demand) of the vintage stuff.

Darn....now I'm two pennies short. image
