Hey Joe,Kinda makes us look pretty stupid, huh? If whatever we collect will lessen in value over time, why are we collecting it??Why not wait for a few years, and then buy cards??I think many of us collect because we think the value will go up.I think we collect PSA cards because many of us believe we have cards that are pretty close to what the PSA number represents rather than somebody else's opinion. And,if we could all afford to buy tens,we would all want the best card so we would have the best collection, therefore, being worth more than anybody elses. But since most of us can't afford to shell out 787 X $200.00 for 10's,we just go along getting cards we like and try to complete our collections.Seeing a card that we paid $8.00 for, sell for $14.00,really piques our interest as well.Somewhere back in what I said,I think has some merit to why many of us collect. But if we start out not knowing values for cards, and don't want to sit and watch sales day after day, then where does one go to get a handle on the value???Isn't it the Sports Market Report that is produced by a reputable company??If that's true, then, why isn't the value of these cards changed to reflect changes in price???Which where this thread began?? Any answers???
By the way, with the Kranepool IA card, I've now officially crossed the 95% point of completion! Unofficially, I've passed it already as I have three cards on the way in to add to my set.

I've always thought that monthly price guides (from CPU through Beckett) do more harm than good. Those "up arrows" are what sell the magazines every month. If the prices don't change all the time we won't buy the magazines - can you imagine what we'd be saying if all the Beckett prices were identical from one month to the next? Some months, with the exception of the really new stuff, that should happen.
Now, I think that the worst thing that could happen would be for SMR to become a widely accepted price guide. The idea of PSA pricing their own product, which is actually an enhancement to someone else's product, is just crazy. If their price doesn't show their product appreciating in value, they'd be killing their business, so they have a vested interest that would be best served by all the little "up arrows" they could print.
I collect the '72 set because it holds great sentimental value to me as 1972 baseball cards were the first thing I ever spent my own money on (I turned 8 in May, 1972). I remember going to the service desk at K-Mart and getting 5 nickels for a quarter so that I could plug them into the vending machine! The top card always got torn up by the machine, but I didn't care (K-Mart didn't sell wax packs). I completed the first, second, third and fifth series that summer - I never saw a sixth series card and only got 5-cents worth of the fourth series from an S.S. Kresge's vending machine... I begged my dad for more nickels, but he said you've already got all those cards. I was unsuccessful in trying to explain that there were 126 more "new" cards in that machine and I needed them all!
I was able to pick up a needed card tonight....Rick Wise IA....so now I am down to 13 cards.................
Joe Maggio, glad to see you posting here............I have been putting this set together now for 15 months......less then you have, but I have admired your patience and frugality in trying to put this set together without having to spend outragously......... I have tried to emulate along the same lines.........................there have been a few cards I probably spent too much on, but not TOO many...................but bidding on EVERY PSA 9 that has come up in the last year has won me many cards at decent prices........The Northrup card in PSA 9 that i own i paid $38 on EBAY........caught a few peoiple napping on that day..........
The 13 cards i still need might take me awhile to accumulate, but I promiss myself i WILL not pay too much for them, including a Gardner card which ultimitiliy is only worth about $65.

Going back to what the SMR prices mean....I noticed on the PSA site the following information.....
Real prices. The prices listed in SMR are based on real market values of PSA graded trading cards and a variety of sports memorabilia. No subjective pricing methods here, just the facts as we scour the world for the latest sales at retail and auction levels.
Find out what your collection is really worth. Every issue contains card, ticket, and memorabilia prices based on established price histories. No subjective pricing surveys or price ranges of ungraded cards or tickets are ever included. This means that our prices more accurately reflect what you will realize when you sell or buy PSA graded trading cards, tickets, and memorabilia.
....therefore, they ARE using this as a price guide as to what the 'real market values of PSA graded trading cards' are. If so, then they should take a little more time to accurately reflect the information that is being published. Just thought that I'd stir the pot a bit more on this topic.

I agree that SMR is the most inaccurate price guide I've ever seen.
I've got a few extra 1972 PSA 8's (NQ) commons for sale. If you're interested, send me offers at j_maggio@insightbb.com. First come, first served. I'm planning to list them on eBay next week (March7), but I'll let you have first crack at them. I've also got about half the 1977 Topps Cloth set in PSA 8 & PSA 9. Check my feedback on eBay to know who you're dealing with (eBay ID = "JoeMaggio").
I need 22, 150, 178, 292, 300, 408, 443, 532, 582, 708, 723 & 757 in PSA 8 NQ or higher to finish my set. I'm also looking for the four series 1 Cubs Green letter variations in PSA 8 NQ.
A couple years ago, I decided to work on a PSA 8 1972 Topps Football set. I only had a few cards when one day, about 60 showed up from the same seller on eBay. I quickly put in competitive bids on all the stars. The seller wasn't getting much interest in his $9.99 opening bid commons with a couple days to go, so I sent him a note saying "If any of your 1972 commons don't sell, I'd be willing to offer you $6 each."
He responded with what I thought was a rude "Yeah! I'll sell them to you for $6 each... add $4 per card for shipping with no discount."
I thought "Screw this guy" and retracted all my bids. He responded with another rude e-mail.
And that's the story of why I can't bid on anything offered by MKWSPORTSCARDS.
I bought an unopened 1972 pack from angelsshoppingaddiction on eBay ("The pack is in great shape for its age with no tears or any major wear to speak of.... Payment is due within 5 days."). I immediately paid with PayPal. After three weeks and a complaint to PayPal, my pack arrived. It had an inch-and-a-half tear on the side.
Couldn't have it graded because of the tear, so I opened it. What do you suppose I found? 10 fourth series, off-center/miscut commons. OK... I expected that to happen. But I didn't expect to find: two of the fifth series checklist, no wax or gum stains on the top and bottom cards, a wax stain on one of the checklists in the middle of the pack & 7 cards with the "brown" back and 3 (including the wax-stained checklist) with the "orange" back.
Of course, angelsshoppingaddiction wouldn't respond to my e-mails, so I eventually left him a negative feedback. Of course, as expected with thieves, he left me a negative as well. Oddly enough though, in his feedback, he claimed that he had given me a PayPal refund - which is a complete lie and eliminated any doubt I had about whether or not it was an honest mistake.
I'm sure he'll offer to mutually remove the feedback, but I shall wear that negative feedback like a badge of honor, knowing that I did the right thing by letting others know about this con artist!
And that's the story of how I got my first negative feedback (after almost 3000 positives) and why you should not buy any unopened packs from angelsshoppingaddiction.
Sorry to hear about your incident Joe. I wish everyone out there dealt on the up and up. But, as we all know, there are people out there always looking for a quick buck off of an honest person.
Joe, by the way, are you interested in upgrading your Joe Morgan Traded card to a 9? I've got a 9 and I'm looking to go with a straight 8 set. So, PM me if you'd be interested in putting together a deal for your 8 Morgan Tr for my 9 (and a player to be named later )

You gotta love having 2 motivated bidders when your a seller. The card doesn't have the characteristics of a high end 8 ,the centering has a lot to be desired.
The two bidders involved for that Morgan Tr card have been paying "fat" (ridiculous) prices for many a card.
I see two new Foli IA cards have graded out at PSA 8 this week......I wonder if either will show up on Ebay.......with many of the set builders still needing this card plus craveking, mmqb, and Bill Novick it will unfortunitily be a $200 plus card.

I've actually been selling some commons through my eBay store as of late and getting good prices for them. So, not sure what is fueling this 'push' for the '72s other than the fact that it's a beautiful and tough set to put together. Do you think that David's set for sale at the larger auction house has brought some attention to it?

I'm not sure that my set is doing much for prices. At only $15,500 for my set, the price is still well below what I have in it. I'm surprised it hasn't attracted more bids. With the recent sales prices of 72s on ebay, the breakup value of my set should be at least $23,500, which is 65% of SMR. My set has a lot of low pop 9s as well as the tough low pop 8s that everyone needs. It has also very sharp PSA 9 stars. There is still over a week to go before the auction ends so I'm sure there will be more bids before the end.

With a couple exceptions (I've got two or three with 70-30 centering that I'd like to upgrade to 60-40), you never have to worry about me bidding on a card I already have in my Registry set.
Good luck!

I see two new Foli IA cards have graded out at PSA 8 this week......I wonder if either will show up on Ebay.......with many of the set builders still needing this card plus craveking, mmqb, and Bill Novick it will unfortunitily be a $200 plus card.

Dale, thanks for the business.
Whoever buys my 72 set will be a very happy camper. At $18,000 it is currently going for well below cost.
