Let's celebrate tokens every Thursday

Here are some Civil War Tokens that literally say they are a "token" to get us started. These were made by Henry Bridgens of New York City and feature George Washington.

This is a store card by William Henry Bridgens, a die sinker, for his own business.

1863 Frank B. Orr - The Washington Token Store Card - Copper Nickel - F-505B-2d GW-579 - PCGS MS66

This token was ordered by Frank Orr for his business when he was just 20 years old and based in Mansfield, Ohio. William Henry Bridgens was based in New York City so it's interesting to think about why Frank chose Henry. It seems like having a token back then is like having a business card or website now, just something needed for your business, even when just starting out!

Mi-225I-1a Fr. Behr, Detroit. "EIN GLAS BIER." PCGS AU53

One of my favorite designs of all time. This is a very rare piece from F. Behr, a bar owner from Detroit, Michigan. An obvious play on words, there is a dancing bear raising a glass of his favorite beverage on the obverse. The reverse bears (pun intended) a depiction of a bowling pin resting on a ball with the words "Ein Glas Bier" or a glass of beer.

I'd love to see a Civil War Token consisting of all beer pictorials. I think it would be a great and fun to collection to build.

Here is an example of the very scarce New York Sanitary Fair Civil War Token. This variety was under estimated as an R-4 in the Fuld book when in fact it is something like an R-6 or 7.

Most of the survivors are in high grade. This one is only a VF, which might make "the poorest known?"

A token issued by the Pantheon Saloon, Honolulu, Kingdom of Hawaii.

The year of 1893 is my estimate of when this token first appeared in the Kingdom based on my original research. No Hawaiian numismatic guidebook provides a year of initial use. (Not sure how our host came up with the year 1893, maybe they reviewed my website?).

I researched the life of James Dodd from Hawaii periodicals of the time. (The Pantheon Saloon martial law news bit is interesting since one month prior, the Kingdom of Hawaii was overthrown).

My first estimate was 1881. (James Dodd was using the business name of Pantheon Saloon on his retail spirit license in 1881, as the saloon was part of the Pantheon Hotel).

Modern issues celebrated the 100th year anniversary of the saloon in 1983. Listed as Medcalf & Russell 2M-365 (bronze, unnumbered, mintage 250)) and 2M-367 (aluminum, unnumbered, mintage 100). The aluminum mintage is incorrectly stated by Medcalf & Russell as 250. The Royal Hawaiian Mint catalog by Bernard von NotHaus states it as 100. Other variation exits in silver, gold, and numbered.

Woohoo! A thread I love. Tried to see what I may have that hasn’t been posted before. Well here goes, as a simple collector , common things like a cannon catch my attention. This token having one on the reverse , was seemingly forgotten. I always want to buy a peacemaker token, because I never see them in great condition... low and behold, I apparently bought one very early in my patriotic journey. This token is very dark brown, but I love the peacemaker. Enjoy.

Thanks! I managed to snag two of these. They don't come up too often. Both of mine are in PCGS holders. The one I posted is PR68DCAM and my other is PR68CAM.

A recent get of mine, Lesher #404 of 1000, nice octagonal silver oz. I read these were produced by the ANA as a fundraiser. I'm jazzed that it was well cared for prior to my custodianship. Have a good day everybody. Peace Roy

My first hold token. Couldn’t pass upon this one as they are always beat up.
1841 NY Old Oaken Bucket Temperance Medals.The dies were cut by Bale and Smith. Temperance slogan in very small letters around man drawing water from a well using the "old oaken bucket"/ "I Pledge to Use No Intoxicating Drink as a Beverage" around "Temperance Leads to Health, Wealth, Happiness and Long Life, A. W. R.".
