Belichick's original Browns notes from 1991 on how to build an offense popped up recently and not much has changed since then. It's pretty crazy that who he wanted at QB described Brady to a tee and that was nine years before Brady was drafted when he was just 14yrs old at the time.
    https://www.espn.com/blog/new-england-patriots/post/_/id/4819681/bill-belichicks-old-1991-scouting-notes-still-apply-today

Maybe this is one reason the Pat's had this 20 year run. Looks like he built his team from that list including and MOST importantly getting Brady.

This is great stuff. I know Belichick wants the coaching record, so we can hope he stays aggressive.

I especially liked the "Can use a slightly dumber guy who is a good athlete" from the Offensive Line section. You just know that there will be some of his former/current O-linemen wondering if they're that guy after reading this lol.

Belichick sort of contradicted himself a little bit later on in the letter about this, but i don't wish to nitpick it too much.

The writing style sort of reminds me of the Art of War by Sun Tzu. I'd be surprised if Belichick hadn't previously read the Art of War and was influenced by it as many in the military, business, etc, have over the centuries.

Perhaps they could call Belichick's letter the Art of Football?

Very cool read from the GOAT NFL head coach.

Can you imagine Bill Belichick as head coach, with Buddy Ryan as defensive coordinator with his aggressive defense style. Buddy Ryan was the best evaluator of defensive talent that i ever saw.

They'd probably have to outlaw it, like breaking up a monopoly or something. LOL

Both Bill Belichick and Tom Brady have been allowed to stay at their craft longer than most are. The combination of talent, drive, opportunity, and experience are not often allowed to stew together like this. Specialists in other fields (take your pick) are able to spend a lifetime perfecting things sometimes, but head coaches and QBs are on a short leash.

Add to this that Belichick credits his Cleveland years as very formative. Many coaches do not have a second chance.

Brady posted a letter on the Player's Tribune site for those that want to read it. I tried posting the direct link to it here but this site won't let me for some reason. There's a link to it in this article on weei.

    Any news/opinions on upcoming draft?

Belichick needs to have a good draft. After this season, afaik, we will be in good shape with the cap. I would love to have two good drafts and be able to spend money wisely, rather than scrambling to make up for bad picks.

I am really starting to get a gut feeling that BB will be gone sooner rather than later - and most likely for the Giants. Am I being crazy?

It's actually been pretty quiet up here outside of mock draft projections. I think with how early they got knocked out of the playoffs and now with everyone sheltered in place I'm hoping BB has just been poring through scouting reports for potential picks. One downside to having everyone social distancing is all NFL teams can't work any players out,I doubt that changes by draft time.

If you look at some of the dynasties of the past that involved the head coach and QB, if the QB leaves and the coach doesn't have success, he's gone.

I don't see why he wouldn't go to the Giants, he'll go to the best situation he can find.

It's going to be VERY interesting in New England when the season resumes. I'll be watching a lot more closely to see how they do with Brady gone.

I would think 8-8 would be as bad as their record will get, but I haven't been following how this off-season has gone for them other than losing Brady. How's the rest of their division looking?

BB is 67 and I just don't see him going elsewhere to start over again. IIRC he's mentioned in the past that he doesn't plan on coaching into his 70's but who knows if that plan has changed or not.
I also think any departure from coaching from NE would likely be at least 2-3 year process imo,it's not so simple where he could just up and go coach elsewhere if he wanted. He's also the team's GM,his son is currently one of his "coordinators" and he has a relationship with Bob Kraft that goes back years before Tom Brady was ever drafted.
I honestly think that he might see his son as HC at some point while he's running the team from the owner's box on sundays. Hopefully this isn't the case but he gave the kid a ton of responsibility over the past few seasons where his kid went from coaching the defensive backs to basically splitting the "defensive coordinator" duties with Jerod Mayo last season.
I'd rather see Josh McDaniels replace BB over his kid.

Just thinking off the cuff, most NFL head coaches even after a Hall of Fame head coaching career with one team, when they go to another team, don't usually do very well.

Belichick is probably aware of that, and as you mentioned at 67 years old, i doubt very much if he would ever move on as head coach to another team.

Belichick has basically everything he could want with the Patriots, so why leave unless he decides to retire which doesn't appear imminent.

"Brady will be back as a Patriot or retire"

It seems the BB discussions are exactly the same as they were for Brady a few months back and look what happened.

Did I miss where Brady came to ask us Pats fans for advice on that decision. ;)
Honestly I think BB's situation is different than Brady's though for the reasons I mentioned in my last comment.

What they didn't say was Julian Edelman was hiding behind a tree when Brady got caught. B)
    https://weei.radio.com/blogs/ryan-hannable/nfl-rumors-tom-brady-thrown-out-of-tampa-bay-park

There's a lot of talk that BB might be looking to trade G Joe Thuney if they can't workout an extension. I think I'd rather see that then have them actually pay him the 15M franchise tag. IMO, it doesn't make sense to pay a guard that much money when Brady is no longer here.

  • Options
    perkdogperkdog Posts: 29,551 ✭✭✭✭✭

Why not pay Thuney though? Just because Brady is gone doesn’t mean we don’t need to protect the QB. I’ve been thinking about what they will do, go with Stidham or draft a rookie? Either way we need that line intact

They do but I just think they have too many holes to fill and that 15m + likely 2nd/3rd round pick could go a long way towards filling them.

I agree but OL is tougher to fill than most other positions though. They could get some WR talent and LB talent through the draft and pay minimal money there

He'll probably not get traded anyways i think because some team would have to give up a fairly high pick then hand him a pretty large extension on top of it. I wouldn't be surprised if this is just the team laeking a possible trade rumor to get him to sign an extension sooner.

Gronk to the Bucs for a 4th? I am not happy. Compensation too low. If the Bucs refused to do better, then don't do it. How about a 3rd and a 6th? A 2nd and 7th. A future first? Or even a 4th and a future 5th? I asked a fellow fan, and he thinks we we're lucky to get a 4th.

I also sent Gronk's 9-12M,whatever it is,off the books to TB so thats a slight bonus. I just hope we get to see this team in action.

I hope we do too. But we gave him away. This is a situation where the Bucs would have overpaid. I think Gronkowski could return to his former self. Maybe less catches, but very high YPC.

the pay per position chart is way out of whack . 15 mil for thuney but they wont pay brady 30? idiocy , 10 million to AB for one game , they constantly overpay random idiots and when you get a guy like amendola who came up huge time after time they wont give him an extra dollar an hour.

go ahead and pay 15 for thuney and watch him get hurt 2 games in and no cap space to manuever

Some very negative sports articles out there about Bill Belichick and him breaking up the team.

What was he supposed to do? Wait until the Patriots went 3-13 like Tom Landry did with the Cowboys?

The NFL is supposed to be about winning football games, not fielding a team with players that perhaps should be in a wax museum.

I have no skin in the game one way or the other with Brady and Gronkowski, and there very well may be glimmers of greatness with them during the upcoming season. However i've got a bad feeling that overall, the harsh reality of NFL killer defensive players is they don't give rat's arze about the legend of Brady and Gronkowski, and may eat them alive out there.

i've said it before and I'll say it again...Brady should have retired and Gronkowski should stay retired.

  • Options
    perkdogperkdog Posts: 29,551 ✭✭✭✭✭

I agree they both should have retired Steve, but the fact of the matter is - especially with Brady is he was tired of Belichick. Gronk definitely needed time to heal and rest but he too was sick of Belichick. Belichick is a great coach, yes I’m
His biggest basher here, I cannot stand some of the things he has done to the point where I overall dislike him more than I like him but I do know he is one of the greatest coaches out there but the guy has a god complex and treats the players as they are below him, I believe in being a strict but fair leader but every now and then you got to give your guys a pat on the back, trust me you get more out of them that way.

I hear ya and don't disagree with ya.

That being said, being an NFL coach and doing it well can be a cruel business. I think many of us here could do a dissertation on this subject, and do it very well. But to sum up, the bottom line is Lombardi said it best, "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing." I would think that Belichick comes to work each day with that in mind, and only that in mind.

My guess is Belichick views winning football games and being a nice guy as a dichotomy. That he'd rather err on the side of being a strict SOB and win football games, than a nice guy and a loser on the football field.

Like him or hate him, if Belichick didn't have that strict focus on winning, he probably would not have turned out to be the GOAT NFL head coach.

Interestingly enough, most of the articles I've read lately that were dissing him about what has happened with Brady, Gronk, etc, still admitted that he is the GOAT. They dislike Belichick personally, but still admit his GOAT status. Bill Belichick is probably quite okay with that.

oh I won't feel sorry for guys that play a kids game for thousands of dollars a minute. You can look at bill and tell he is always the biggest douche in the room , any room , no matter how big.

Win the games but nobody wants to be around people like that outside of the football. I think he is way out on the autism spectrum

Although I'm not familiar with any of the names they drafted I do like that BB drafted a couple TEs as well as shoring up the front 7/pass defense. I joked in the other thread about Bill drafting a DII safety in the 2nd but it sounds like the kid can play some linebacker and has the speed to cover RBs & TEs in the passing game. Now today he needs to go draft a bunch of fatties to add depth to both interior lines.

The Bills took him, that’s weird they would take him since Allen is the clear cut guy, not as odd as the Packers taking Love though.
