    My recent returns from our hosts had some cracked NGC quarter submissions. As a rule, in just about every instance, I had a resulting downgrade...     My experience was different. I sent in an NGC 95-O dime in 53. It crossed to PCGS as a 55. I do believe CAC prefers PCGS to NGC in my limited experience.

    NGC is all over the board. Lately I have bought quite a few no brainer crackout Barber Half's! A few years ago an AU was all but a guaranteed notch or 2 lower!

    Twelve days since I looked at thread and lots of nice coins posted. I'll comment on the 04-S half in VF-20.

    My experience when it comes to acquiring tough coins that are, let's say, top of the class:

    If I believe that I own a "top of the class" coin, or the nicest one for the grade, then all the others will drag it down....on paper. But I believe that someone will be willing to pay for it when I'm ready to sell. I think of my 01-O quarter in 58 as an example.

    Justin, since everyone loves your 4-S in 20, I wouldn't worry a bit about it.

    Had a wonderful coin show with Doug and Jim today. Nicer barbers and seated would be hard to find.

    Jeff - 97-O was raw, from my friend Dan's collection. He sent a few in, maybe more to follow down the road.

    Tim - My experience with the TPG's is like a roll of the dice. One never knows.

    Paesan - Couldn't agree more.

    I picked up a 1908 O Dime in a PCGS AU 58 holder recrntly:


    It has a PVC spot on the obverse, so I'll need to crack it out and fix it. The date is a bit of a challenge to find, so it's worth the hassle and expense.

    I love them Barber Halves.....

    That '99-O sure is beautiful Craig, agreed. I like the New Orleans Mint emphasis here. Reminds me of the Old Mint not having a capital plastics set on display. The quarters you have are nice and they are not easy to come by nice as a set. Great job!

    His Liberty Nickels will be featured in the next BCCS Journal Centerfold. I'll work with John Frost to get some of his other coins in there as well. We all owe Mike and need to pay tribute to him.

    Does anyone know what's happening to his coins?

    He did mention he was consigning a bunch to Heritage. I suspect that is where they will end up if they are sold.

    Sometime last year I remember Mike goading me on to "run through" and post the complete list of New Orleans Barber Quarters in the collection. I guess that got me going. So, I'll run through 1900-O through 1909-O over the next days.

    Received back a few Barbers both from our hosts and CAC... let me unveil 2 of them today:

    1901-O / Horiz O FS-501 (FS-010) Dime. DIMEMAN won't believe it (I still can't believe it) - it straight-graded to PC25. POP 1!!! - Not going to complain.

    Congrats on getting the '01 O in a holder. As you know it's not an easy task these days to find raw Barbers that will grade.

    I have a raw 1901-O/Horiz O I found on Ebay I need to get graded. It should XF. It will be for sale as I have a PCGS58.

    It's a lot easier now than it was only a couple of years ago since PCGS has relaxed their strictness on cleaned coins. :s There's a lot of crap out there now in PCGS holders now that I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole! No Offense sedulous but that includes your 01-O/O dime.

    No offense taken Darrell, I agree with you. I sent it in (01-O/HorizO) fully expecting a details grade. It was a surprise to me to.

    Darrell - I agree, more coins that were bagged for cleaning are now given straight grades.

    Craig - Nice way to finish off your run of O mints. That 63 looks undergraded to me.

    This is one Barber Quarter that I would like to leave on the Thread for as long as it "lives".     That is a beauty. Guessing from the pedigree you purchased it from Mike. Negotiations with Mike were always fun. Usually got a fair deal and a little education. Congrats on that acquisition
