Mike! Looks like you went home with quite a nice haul! While this was the slowest FUN show I have ever had in almost 20 years things did finally pick up and make the show worth while although still disappointing.

It was quite obvious to many of us in the budget section that FUN did seem to do what they could to reduce the traffic flow to the budget section. When it was in Tampa last time we were probably 2-300 feet closer to the entrance and the budget section stayed so busy many of the dealers in the regular section were complaining about it. The budget section was all but isolated from the rest of the show by the widely spaced 200+ feet of displays between the regular and budget section. I totally dread going to Ft. Lauderdale next year. The expenses are probably going to be 2 times the cost of Tampa and 2+1/2 times the cost of Orlando. This leaves me needing to decide if I want to give up my prime table location(In Orlando) so I can skip the next 2 FUN shows. I would attend but just not set up.

My stance on this coin market is it is time to sit back and hold. I have reduced the number of regulars shows I used to attend from 40 to around 12 per year. Some may question my strategy but I am semi-retired and do not wish to bust my arse anymore to make a dime instead of a dollar! Costs to attend shows are going up, the number of table holders is going up, and the number of real buyers at shows is waning.

Dr. Pete, It was very nice to meet and talk with you. Congradulations on the successful sale of your wonderful set of Barber Half's! It was quite interesting for me as you spotted many coins in my inventory that you had once owned!

Don owned 2 97-S's in 58. I didn't realize that 3 more had been made. Hmmmmm...a tag or 2 laying around? but I wouldn't expect that.

JJ Teaparty has 3 PC 58 '97 S for sale; there are only 7 of them. I find that a bit concerning.

DrPete - Congratulations on the successful sale. Quality will out, regardless of the current market feeling.

Jeff - I find it unusual that 3, 97-S's would be in the same dealer's cases, but I don't view AU58's as investor coins, so I don't look at this as an indication that investors are exiting. I view AU58's as collector coins. If 40% of all Morgans in MS68 were showing up, I'd think investors were dumping. Not that I'd notice the Morgans.

Craig - Thanks. I enjoy looking at the virtual album often. I'm very fortunate.

Jeff - Hard to ignore the superior strike on option #2.

Jeff - There's a lot to be said for the eye appeal of the coin in hand to your naked eye. I think you should pick which one you like best overall.

Presenting the 11th 1906 S PCGS AU 58:

It's the same coin I posted a few weeks back that came out of a NGC MS 61 holder. I was kind of hoping for a "plus" grade, but now that PCGS has a "Plus Only" tier selection my guess is they'll make us resubmit coins to get Plus grades. Not that they need the money, they just enjoy looking at really nice coins for a second (and maybe third) time.

I received an eBay purchase in the mail today- a dark 1899 O Half:

The coin has odd scale looking things on the surface, crud in the crevices, and doubling on the reverse:

What is this- a real AU coin or a coin Dr. special??

The doublimg looks to me like it's from the die, not machine doubling. I can't find any attribution to it, however.. It doesn't show up on the BCCS Barber Half Survey. Do they name doubling finds after the person who discovered them?

My concern is the coin looks like it has some sort of environmental damage; it probably won't grade. I'm wondering if I should keep it or return it. Without the doubling it would be in the mail.

Jeff-Always neat to find doubling, but I checked all my references also and no mention of that coin.
Found this on Ebay, sellers pic was real bad but worth the $99 bid hoping it would be better in hand.

Jeff,

My email thoughts on the 99-O Half are still my opinion.

After a closer look, I believe the coin has altered surfaces

and will not grade numerically. Sorry.

The REV is not a Repunched die - its Die Shifting { Shelf Doubling }

Or...what ever they're calling it these days.

Personally, I'd return it to the seller...

Jeff - It looks like machine doubling to me also, but I'm a long way from a variety expert. Machine doubling isn't common on barber coinage is it? It's very common on Indian Cents, my other main collecting focus.

Dave - I'd say your photographic skills are coming along very well. Congrats on a very reasonably priced newp.

Yesterday wasn't too bad. I picked up my 01-S PC 50 and it came with a bonus, in case that wasn't enough, the 14-S in 58. Maybe I'll find an 01-O in my change.

Something about the pitting around the devices doesn't seem right to me on the 99-O 50c... I'm thinking possible counterfeit, but would want to see in hand before making that call.

All I can say is "SIGH".....

I had to conssole myself this morning...after being up since 3:15 AM

because of the heavy wind and rain... I thought I was going to loose

part of the roof ... 80 mph winds .... at least 6" of rain ....

I went back to sleep with the rain stopped at 6:15 but not before spotting

a couple of V Nickels for my MS set....

I have this date in the same grade - but, this one caught my eye & I knew

I had to have it. Seems that I have another MS of this date as well, a MS 63

Guess I now have an Heir and a Spare !!

Well of course it's going down in value- 2/3 of the PCGS Security sticker is now missing.

I don't think it's one of the best examples I've seen, but I wouldn't be ashamed to own it. I guess I like diversity.
