Yeah...I guess ya got me there Verne. I have never been attracted to that mottled brown type of toning. What I should have said was it doesn't seem to exhibit enough luster to warrant an AU grade.
It would be interesting to sit in the Grading Room and hear the discussion/ justifiications on grades. Does PCGS sell tickets to attend? Perhaps another revenue stream?
Jeff - Great idea on the grading room discussions. I would pay to know what their thinking was on many coins I've seen. Bet we shouldn't hold our breath waiting for it to happen tho.
Patches - My old Nikon is showing its age. I think some of the pixels are starting to go.

Vern l It's not having what you want, it's wanting what you've got.
Anyone get an offer from ebay to sell 5 items without any insertion or final value fees? I did, which surprises me since I haven't listed anything on ebay in at least a couple years. They must be hard up for business.
Pics for this AM, from Paesan's Stash, PC53:
Vern l It's not having what you want, it's wanting what you've got.
I've been buying and selling on eBay for years and have yet to receive any offer other than "list 50,000 items this month with no insertion fee"- big deal.
I've determined they only offer incentives to infrequent users, not to their regular customers.
Looking through images of my small Liberty Head Gold type set I found this misplaced image of one of my favorites. I wish I could post all my Barbers. ...Maybe Vern and Mike could do this. It would keep us occupied for quite some time.
Paesan - It was a very good idea that years ago served the online community and still made a big profit. Then it's founders got greedy, went public and like most corporations, only cares about profits, without any concern about the quality of the services it provides.
Jeff - Makes sense trying to draw back the infrequent users.
Craig - Be happy to help get pics of your wonderful collection in this thread in any way I can.

Darrell, I'm glad at least someone is paying attention! I'm amazed at the snarky comments that people will send about my coins. If I don't particularly like a listing, I'm not compelled to criticize the seller.
Craig, Look forward to seeing more of your collection.
Jeff, I agree with your comment.
I think the biggest issue with feeBay is that the buyers can get away with murder if there is a dispute. Sellers risk a lot.
Hey Paesan - I noticed a coin of yours last night on eBay and sent you a PM thru their system to please make sure you bring it to FUN. I was very impressed with the over all look.
Darrell...you had so many new coins up for sale - I might have to do a Willis
and start another set of AU 58's !! Lots of beauties in your inventory !! Planning on visiting you at the show, too.
I'll be at lot viewing on Wednesday (late) morning - looking at a bunch of Halves -
there are three AU 53's that I am very interested in. Plus, I'd like to revisit the Shireman set
which Peter once showed me at the PCGS table at another show a few years back. One coin of
which was a standout and I hope to be able to make a play for it.
Aside from an upgrade for my Quarter set ( no dates mentioned ) there are three Pattern V Nickels
which I would like to examine up close. ( J1690 & J 1691 & J 1693 ) ..." The poor man's 1913 V Nickels."
All dated 1882 No Cents Patterns. I almost had a nice AU 58 once but the dealer said he misquoted me and
returned my check.
I get to pick up a few coins from dealers while at the show, Glenn has held a neat 1902-S Dime in PC 58 CAC
for me - and Dave Kahn has held a very nice 1902-O Half in PC 53 for me as well.
Looking forward to this show, as I rarely get to shows any more. Most importantly, I get to see old friends again.

Edit: Glenn Holsonbake of Americana Rare Coins in Sacramento will not be at the show; however, his business partner, Steve Feltner, will be. They have decided not to formally set up at this show. It's too bad actually, as I havealways liked stopping at Glenn's table to either chew the fat while looking over his inventory when I wasn't actually helping him out as I did for a few years.
Hope every one has a Happy & Healthy New Year !!

I purchased a 1906 S NGC 61 Barber Half at a Heritage Sunday Auction a few weeks back:
I sent this to PCGS for crossover last week; I'm hoping to get grades before FUN. Naturally I'm hoping for a slight downgrade as I'm in need of a 58. I think this one has a chance.
I purchased another 1906 S NGC Half in a 62 holder about a year ago with the same thought process- it returned as a 63:
I think I have a much better chance this time.....
Lenny, Ebay is full of people of all walks of life...The Good,The Bad, and The Ugly!
Verne, you've added quite a few quarters that are nice!
Mike,Look forward to seeing you at FUN. You would only have competition from me on 1 coin if you start a 58 set again. Thinking I'm gonna send the rest of my set in for review at FUN. I have not been able to figure out what PCGS is looking for to assign the + designation.

Hopefully not; I see too many stray scratches to think of it as Unc. I purchased this 1906 O Half in a NGC 61 holder as well:
PCGS put it in a 58 holder. I think it looks more like an Unc. coin than my '06 S in for grading now. If PCGS crosses it at the same grade I guess I'll need to crack it and carry it in my pocket for a few days....
Jeff, From your pictures I think the 06-O is a 58. Look closely at your pictures and you will see the 06-S has marks on the cheek but the luster is unbroken while the luster is broken on the 06-O. Of course this is just my take on what I see from your pictures!
Paesan - Snarky comments, I guess some people just like to feel like bigshots. In all likelihood, they know nothing about coins in the first place.
Mike - Sounds like you're going to have fun at FUN.
Jeff - Congrats on the 06-O, and good luck with our hosts on the 06-S.
Darrell - If you're referring to my new "It's good to have a deep bench" set in the qtr registry, some of those I've had, some I've reacquired from Doug, and some are now duplicates having just been replaced in my original qtr registry set.
Craig - Great to see your new set in the quarter registry.

of Doug's Quarters.
I especially like the 07-S - although it looks under graded for a 53. Beautiful coin !!
At the Ft Myers Coin Show last month, our Paesan sold me a raw AU 07-S - Quarter
the reverse is at least a MS 64 the obverse was lightly cleaned - but it makes no
matter if I get it into a Genuine Holder AU details, I'll be happy !
One of these days, I'll end up with a fully graded example
(aside from my VF 25 hole filler !! )
Newp / Upgrade for the worst struck Half in the series: 1902-O & this is no exception !
The toning sold me on this one !
The new { finally !! } Grade of Choice ! It took me long enough !!

I think it might be an AU 58 but it could come in as a 62. I like the color and don't mind the spots.
Jeff...you're certainly plugging along with the new Quarter set, huh ?
Looks nice - softer strike on the sinister claw as i remember ! I think
an acetone bath to remove some impurities might be in order.
Chatted with a friend abut his Halves - and he's upgraded an old friend of mine
which is now "coming home"...
