    Mike,

Nice to here your report and glad to hear your support of our newest Barber Marketeers! image
  • paesanpaesan Posts: 1,555 ✭✭✭✭✭
Darrell, To elaborate a little, my expectations as to being a "dealer" for the first time were to simply practice my communication skills with fellow dealers and collectors, hopefully make a few contacts, and to sit back and observe. Selling coins was not a priority, though I ended up selling 7 in total. Mike did help out a lot and I'm glad to have had a few in my case that interested him.

The clientele was mostly scroungers, rifling thru cardboard flips and buckets of cheapies in search of small treasures. Had I known, I'd have brought some of my modern stuff and probably would have sold more. Almost sold a few 500$ plus coins but nobody pulled the trigger.

Best moment was selling a 25$ Lincoln Cent that I had brought to a YN who was excited and enthusiastic. It brought me back to when collecting was purely for the love of collecting coins; that pure passion that the grumpy old men with their lists and sheets have long forgotten. It was a 1938-S/S/S PC 64 Rd. When I gave him the loop to look at it, he just thought it was really neat and he ate it up. It was my best sale of the day.

Newest addition - a duplicate - and a bit more eye appeal than the one in my set.

I discovered that one of the certified coins I bought from Paesan had a True View.

As I bought this for a friend, he's thrilled.

I suppose this is worth sharing as my first post to the Barber Mega Thread. While browsing through what lots have put in the Heritage FUN sale, besides Dr. Shireman's half set. It's appear the Eliasberg PF-66 BM 1894-S 10c will once again be hitting the market. I will let you discuss what your guys thoughts about it are, what it's worth, etc. Hopefully my link works.

the 94-S has been available often in the past few years. I don't follow it close enough to know which one exchanges hands where.
  • barberkeysbarberkeys Posts: 4,154 ✭✭✭✭✭
ABlinky - Welcome to the barber mega-thread. My thoughts on the 94-S dime are similar to those on the 1804 dollar, if one has enough money to afford one and the desire to own one, then it can be had. Their whereabouts are known.

I added two AU 58 Upgrades to my Dime set today.

The 1902-S in 58 is a modest upgrade for my AU 55 - and I have decided to keep

the AU 55 as well... adding it to my Duplicate set...which will eventually end up with

my cousin's son whose collection I have been working on these last 8 years.

    image

I rarely put myself behind the "8-Ball" buying off eBay. I have been looking for an AU 58

1911-D Dime - and although I found one, the images are terrible. I hope its only the

images that are bad...I hate returning coins.....

    Edit: Re: Vern's comment....

Well, I am very pleased to say that the 1911-D in PCGS 58

arrived today.... I knew an amateur photographed that coin.

The luster is medium gold around the rims. Lots of Plums and deep

Sapphire blue on the Cap. I love it. Once it's professionally imaged

you'll see what I am talking about.

Frank - Yes, the 03-P was straight graded. Our hosts ignored the rim issues. I'm with you on those being an issue.

Paesan - I drool also, it's about as nice as an AU58 can be, and it happens to be one of the toughest dates. A daily double.

Mike - Glad the dime looks great in hand.

Vern, ...A comment on Doug's wonderful 01-O AU58: IMO it is one of the 5 most difficult upper end AU to exist in the Barber Quarter series (01-O, 01-S, 07-S, 09-O,13-S). The 96-S comes in behind these dates (along with the 97-S).

    Time for a POP Quiz!!

Other than the 1892 Micro O, what Barber Half Dollar has the lowest total coin POP count in PCGS holders?

Of course you could look it up, but that would take the fun out of it. image
    I love them Barber Halves.....
  • LogPotatoLogPotato Posts: 2,176 ✭✭✭✭
Last time I dug into the pops, it was the 02S. That's been over a year though.
  • paesanpaesan Posts: 1,555 ✭✭✭✭✭
Jeff, I'd guess that the tough coins have a lot of pops in the lower end grades, like the 01-S quarter. Justin probably has the right idea, going with a semi-key. I'll say 98-S, since the quarter has low pops too.

Craig, Could you post that 96-S every month please? :-)

Kevin, great look on your 99-S half!

All these years, I would have sworn the lowest POP ( total ) would have been the 1896-O

....then, possibly the 1893-S ( one of my favorite dates ) the 1904-S's staggering new

population precludes my adding this date to the lowest total population report

Craig's list of tough qtrs in upper AU got me to look at pop reports. It turns out there is only one 01-S in 58. I looked back to my oldest PCGS pop report, April 1994, and found there was one there as well. Wonder where it's been all this time?

I decided to take the plunge and pickup another Surfcity Special while available- an 1896 S AU 58 with a Green CAC Sticker:

    image

    image

This is a Proof Like coin; I thought it looked great. The '96 S Half has a low Pop count of 7 in PC 58, so it's a tough coin to come by.
    I love them Barber Halves.....
  • amwldcoinamwldcoin Posts: 11,269 ✭✭✭✭✭
Jeff,If I recall that 96-S was a great buy. I see you squeaked back into 3rd again! image Man you 2 are neck and neck!
  • MFHMFH Posts: 11,720 ✭✭✭✭

    Great looking 96-S - Jeff !!

BTW - anyone aside from myself - notice the 1897-O Half at Heritage in

PCGS 45 - that just sold the other day ? The obverse had a large patch of

charcoal "smudge". It was not all that attractive. However - someone liked

it to the tune of $4,465 { All In }. I think I'll stick with my VF 30 for $1,000.

    image

    Images by Valente151

This is the last coin I want to upgrade. I bought it when I thought I was going to

do a VF set. Today, the grade of choice has become AU 53. I just upgraded my 1900-S

via Stacks-Bowers in last month's auction with a light golden AU 53. Not too bad a

    coin, afterall.

Mike, I agree that the coin was not all that great; the smudge was ugly. I was interested in it at $3,500 but not close to $5K!

I;m guessing Ed (Sunshine State) bought the coin to upgrade his 25; that would be a huge upgrade. I'll likely be back it 4th in a couple of days.

Mike,The 97-O went for $4700 all in according to my email from Heritage.

Verne, The timing was definitely right on this 97-O. It's been a year and a half since you priced it!

Jeff,Ed asked me what I thought it would sell for. I tried to encourage him to bid a little more but he wouldn't budge of my low estimate of $4000 and my high estimate of $5000. Seems I nailed it! I think I know who bought it...if so it will be showing up in the registry set soon.

Sorry, but that 97-O at 4700 is ridiculous. I probably will upset some people with that statement, but oh well. Overall the coin was ok, but the black spot really takes away from the eye appeal for me and it didn't warrant the price.

Vern, I may not have been a buyer on the 96-S but if Keith upgrades that 04-S, I would probably be interested.

TO - Dr Pete's 06-S is just amazing, as are many of his halves. I was lucky enough to view several of them in hand at the Heritage table in Baltimore. I wish him nothing but the best in his upcoming sale at FUN.

I agree with you Justin. To think I paid just $1,400 more for this PC MS 64:

Something is wrong with the competitive spirit of the Everyman Set thing when someone spends huge $$ on a not so nice XF 45 when a very nice 64 can be had for 30% more $$. Maybe I need to crack out my 64, carry it around in my pocket for a week, get it slabbed in a 58 holder, and sell it for huge $$?
