Long time no post, hi all. Getting the shop up and running with a 6 day work week has been shall i say time consuming! But it's working and succeeding, turns out along with the website reboot at the end of 2013 to have been good decisions. image

Darrell congratulations on your pluses. Your 58 set is up there among the finest.

Dr Pete, you have a lifetime pass to post on here. Thanks for sharing your experiences. I recall all the similar feelings when my set sold in 2009.

oih8, I agree with Mike it is a different RPD. A 4 digit punch in that era was used and your example has slight differences. Particularly the upper loop of the 8 where the first punch appears to have been more tilted with the 1 slightly higher thus the upper loop of the 8 closer in alignment to the final 8. There are slight differences in the placement and line up with the denticles as well. I have handled at least 3 different RPD's including the cherry picker variety for the date.

Jeff, sweet 58's, the 07-S is so tough.

MFH love that sweet nickel. As pretty a 63 as can be.

Vern and Doug nice to see the pics regularly.

    Happy hunting everyone.

It is frustrating to see a 1901-S Barber Quarter like this in a straight graded holder. I somehow can guarantee if I submitted one with this many scrapes it would come back in a details holder. The fact that it isn't, depresses the price of all the good ones out there. This less than stellar piece will sit for a long time and likely sell at a depressed price after enough time. Making it hard for nice examples to ever come to market. I wish PCGS would stop grading examples like that...so many scratches!
  • MFHMFH Posts: 11,720 ✭✭✭✭
Steve / Patches : I see where you're coming from. It's not the prettiest one I have

ever seen in a F12 Holder. But, scratches or not, it graded a straight 12. The marks

weren't bad enough to Net Grade it.

I have tried posting a new addition to Photobucket, but, it's still giving me fits.

Yes, it's not bery nice. If I had to guess this one have have been submitted a few times before receiving a mercy grade.

On the flip side, however, the scratches and surface issues seem to be old; PCGS can be forgiving of original damage like that (like it or not). The coin certainly is worth much less than a nice one, but who knows what people will pay when hard up for a tough coin? I'll admit I've done it (and kick myself later).

    I love them Barber Halves.....

Spotted this - from Americana Rare Coins - via PonyExpress8 - and knew I

had to get it... As I have this date with Bulls-Eye Toning in MS 62 - I thought

this would be a great way to do a date set in 58's - and will submit same for the

elusive Plus Grade. I have around four 58's now - and I think it'll take a few years

to acquire a complete date set in 58+.

There is absolutely no chatter to keep this from a plus grade. I learned quite a bit

by chatting with Darrell the other night. We reviewed all his 58's - and I believe I

have a better handle on the 58 / 58+ situation than I had before. Thanks, Darrell !

    Mike- That's a looker!!

Let me =know when you get the 58+ thing figured out. From what I've seen a 58+ needs to have:

      A great strike
      Great surfaces
      Minimal chatter
      Overall Eye appeal

Is that consistant with your thoughts?

    I love them Barber Halves.....
  • MFHMFH Posts: 11,720 ✭✭✭✭
    Jeff...yes...

...as a matter of fact, I just started dates sets for "Ginja Max AU 58 - 58+"

as well as a "Ginja Max Mint State Set" .... Which will be a very slow set to complete

and as if the 58 set will be any faster ....image

Justin, If a couple more people decide to do what I did you would have a difficult time completing that awesome set you are starting!

Glenn...you need to participate more here and thanks for the Kudos. Glad your shop is doing well...hard thing to do these days!

Mike....don't know what you learned from me! Still trying to figure it out here. PS Good luck on the 1900 but my experience says 50/50.

Jeff...The one thing I would add to your list is a coin that is a total PL Luster Bomb unlike the 07-O I bought from you.

Patches...I guess if a scratch is old enough PCGS lets it pass. I think if I submitted it, it would take more than 1 try to get it in a problem free holder.
  • barberkeysbarberkeys Posts: 4,154 ✭✭✭✭✭
Glenn - Good to see you back in the thread.

LordM - Neat love token, thanks for posting.

Patches - I share your frustrations. That 01-S is a damaged coin, and shouldn't be in a straight graded holder. These type of coins being in graded holders do depress values in the price guides, but that can be a benefit for a selective buyer.

Mike - Congrats on the newp half.

Jeff - I think you've got the criteria down, now if only the grading services actually applied them consistently..........

Pics for this AM, contemplating replacing my PC55 with this PC53 from Doug's collection. Interestingly, both came from Walt K.

It was a raw submission to PCGS; it only took 2 days to grade on the Express tier. The coin is in transit; I should get it back tomorrow. Now there are5 AU 58's (market diluted).

    Raw photos:

Darryll, I don't want to tell you what I paid; you would shoot me!

Luck does happen- my '14 and '05 O AU 58 Halves were both raw submissions as well.

Silly me, I had no inkling of what 97-O Half everyone was alluding to... So, I checked out

your Registry set and Lo and Behold, there was a very nice MS 64 in the 97-O slot !

I was just about to congratulate you, Jeff, when I saw your recent post with the new 97-O

You just submitted raw and got an AU 58. Very nice coin ( not that your 64 isn't )

and your risk taking has paid off much more than I ever realized.

So...how'd the roll searching go ? LOL !!

I just replace my 06-O. Hoping it will be my next +! The surfaces are so refective it looks like it has color it doesn't. Fully Struck Luster Bomb with just a hint of Rev toning! I already upload pic's if yal wanna see it.

Great looking coin, Darryl. It's hard to understand why that coin is in an AU holder rather than a MS holder.

Jeff - Acquiring that 97-O as you did is like cherrying a micro O.

Darrell - Good luck on the plus on your 06-O.

I picked up my '97 O 50C PCGS AU 58 at the Post Office yesterday. I didn't want to risk having the Mailman deliver it; I figured Darryll drove to Tampa Friday night and was waiting to mug my mailman.

Here it is in it's new holder:

    image

It's a great strike for a New Orleans coin, but I'm guessing this one's not worthy of a + grade. I still really like it though; I really thought I would never get one in AU let alone a 58! imageimage

Jeff, I think your 97-O is one of the nicest coins you've posted, plus or not. As you mentioned, the strike is excellent, but more importantly, I have to struggle to see any surface distractions. I'd say its a 20K coin.

    Lenny, So what's a 96-O in 58 worth? Pop is 3 in 58 and MS Pop is 21. 97-O Pop's are 5 in 58 and 35 in MS last time I looked!

Darrell - Are all 5 97-O's in PC58 slabs worth the same amount? For that matter, are all 3 96-O's worth the same amount? I say definitely not, unless they all have the same look, luster, issues, strike, etc. One of them is going to have the right combination and be worth more. What I like as the right combination might be different than what you like, but in all likelihood, one will be more desirable, and be worth more. Unless we don't care what the coins look like, and only care that our hosts have slabbed them as 58. I'm sure you don't look at it that way any more than I do.

Doug - Thanks, I look forward to our next get together.

Verne, I don't think any 58 Barber 1/2 is worth near 20K except a micro O! And no not all 58's are the same! Anyone know how much Don's 04-S in 58 sold for or if it's still available. He paid somewhere in the 20K range for it. Time will tell!

Darrell, et al: All of the Surf City Coins that did not sell by the end of FUN, must have been

taken back by the consignor, as none were listed after the show was over. There were a few

that caught my eye and I was about to make an offer or two on a couple of them.

Mike...my guess would be they are going up for auction. You could always contact Don and see if you could work a deal if not.
  • JeffMTampaJeffMTampa Posts: 3,278 ✭✭✭✭✭
Darrell, we all know you understand the Barber Half world better than any of us. Yes, a '96 O is definitely King. As I understand a roll of MS '97 O's was discovered in the 30's but there have been no hoards of '96 O uncovered. That will ultimately prove the tough one.

Not that obtaining a PC AU 58 was easy.

    I love them Barber Halves.....
  • barberkeysbarberkeys Posts: 4,154 ✭✭✭✭✭
Mike - I think a nice 53 will be as tough to find as a 58. Hope you find it.

Darrell - I'm not a barber half specialist, but from my perspective 04-S's are overpriced relative to 96-O's and 97-O's.

Paesan - I like when you stir the pot.

I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but Vern is the Barber image master. I've seen several of the coins he has imaged in hand, and they are spot on!

Why is the "S" mint mark on a 14-S quarter always so mushy? Maybe a 14-S quarter with razor sharp S is a 20K coin
  • amwldcoinamwldcoin Posts: 11,269 ✭✭✭✭✭
Mike, I don't think I deserve the title you bestow upon me!

Verne I have always thought the 04-S's were overrated! Guess because they were king for so long.

JMW I just looked at the 3 in F or better I have and they all are like Verne's. I guess the punch they were using was past it's useful life!

Joe - I can't recall seeing a crisp 'S' on a 14-S qtr, and I think Darrell must be right on why.

Justin - When you acquire yours, I'm betting it'll have just the right look, and cost way less than $20K.

Mike - Your 04-S has just the right look to me, which would be worth a few grading points in detail if I were buying it. I'm guessing your former 97-O half is one of the many you wish you'd never sold.
