How many sets like this went from zero to hero in two days?
Every other set that had something interesting in it was known about for months. Or at least weeks.
Two days before this set was released, it was still a yawner, a plain-jane Denver MS Sacabuc and a uninteresting CU $1 FRN to everyone, including the Mint's press release. Without that EU Sac, what's this set go for right now on ebay? $10.00?
If the Mint did this intentionally, it was a brilliant marketing move. Huge word-of-mouth immediately before release. They should do this every year to keep everyone on their toes. You know, Christmas presents for those who pay attention.
(I wasn't around here for the collector ASE '08 with the '07 reverse, but I'll bet that thread blew up to a high post count in a short time, too...)

Rest assured, nothing about this was "brilliant" on the Mint's part. They don't do anything near brilliant when it comes to marketing distribution and selling. This was a big screw up and the Board struck quickly. The US Mint just hates when us 'folks' make money moon on Mint Products. It is humiliating on a professional level for Mint Mgmt., try as they might to adjust.
It took them almost **3 weeks** to implement Family limits of (5) units that could have stopped the windfall that has occurred. Imposing limits now is the equivalent of trying to shut the barn door after the animals escaped. A centrally planned Govt agency like the US Mint works like this, all the time.

They were first on sale, then out of stock. Later they came back on sale, then OOStock. They have been flipping between "back order sales" and OOS for a week maybe.
Last sales number reported 38k/50k sold.

I like the new back order button. It lets people know right away they are being sold before being in the warehouse.
i just ordered and they took the money immediately. This indicates to me they have product to sell. They wouldn't take the money if i was just going to sit there on BO.

See, you just don't see the big picture. You call things like this brilliant, so if someone from the mint is reading what's being said, they mark it down as a plus.

But they're still on sale if you want one (and haven't reached your household limit.) To say it was imposed "after the animals escaped", doesn't ring true. They imposed the limit with more than 20% of the product left.
However, for all the complaining about how these sets are being handled, let's pretend this set went on sale four months ago, when Novitex still did the fulfillment. What would have happened?
The set would have gone on sale, and the first 14K would have sold out. The Mint would have never stopped sales. They would have taken orders (with no household limits) until the oversold the 50K, then would have announced a waitlist.
That the Mint (or PFSweb) is now stopping sales and actually re-evaluating demand and placing household limits is a huge step forward.

Having been on the boards for awhile, I will state the these forums (PCGS) are pretty quick jumping on to new products and potential flips. There are always those that chime in with "I won't EVER purchase directly from the Mint", "All modern crap is CRAP", etc etc etc.
So, it doesn't surprise me that this thread is HUGE and there is a lot of information. Been that way since the 2006 Eagle flips that I can recall (and maybe prior to that....I just didn't do any real flipping until then, so that is the timeframe I remember starting with most).
On another board, someone had asked about these same sets, I think it was just a little after the posts started here......that thread was pretty pathetic and not because of the OP but because of the responses, and attitudes, given. Of course, many of those responding there act quite the elitist on many things (coins, forums, people, etc), so it wasn't surprising.
Actual "NEW" mint issues (not just a new year in a staid set) will be given a lot of time/space here on the PCGS USCF....sometimes they fizzle out when the coin/set doesn't do well, sometimes they fly high for awhile. Over there, very little like that. Maybe it is because the board is slower, a subset just wants to focus on the most important things for threads to be focused on (hating on moderns does well....so does hating on CAC....and hating on PCGS posts/posters (something about koolaid etc etc etc).
The downside is that, in large threads, sometimes important details get overlooked or ignored, just due to the volume and when "funny" people decide to clutter things up with what they consider humor, that really adds nothing to the discussion at hand...not even tangentially.
So, give and take, but overall, I don't see it slowing down and these forums will be the continuing place for new updates on issues and the sharing of info (though, some folks ONLY show up to get info in order to profit and they NEVER seem to give anything (information-wise, continued posts, etc) in return.
<< <i>i just ordered and they took the money immediately. This indicates to me they have product to sell. They wouldn't take the money if i was just going to sit there on BO. >>
I think they take the money and if they can fill the order with in a few days they keep it. If on back order items I have noticed in the recent past they take it out for a day or two and then put it back in your bank or CC if its not shipped by a couple days. I think they want to be sure you have the money available?
The Mint ALWAYS will hit your cc with a "test" charge before it actually debits it.
This tells them if your account is valid. However, the purchase will not go through unless they are ready to ship. If an item is on BO, that initial charge will stay there a few days. If it does not ship in that time-frame, you will see the charge reverse on your cc UNTIL they fill the order and then you will see it hit you again. I've had this take weeks. They do NOT really charge you until it is ready to ship.
So for all those who think their 12/4 or later orders that initially hit their cc are "shipping", that is incorrect UNTIL you get the "ORDER SHIPPED" notice. You can verify this if you check your order status on the Mint's website.

As far as the objects of all this frenzy (which IMO is starting to taper down ALREADY!) - they are pleasant enough though the reverse design really not all that artistic. The enhanced surface is nice enough but not outrageous. The mintage of 50k certainly puts this issue WAY behind the 1997 matte nickel.

IMO, not really. These are base metal "wonders" that I doubt will have much future traction either. They are nice for what they are, but as kids say "not all that". These are apples and apples, except there may not be the appeal to Sacagawea dollars as there are to Jeff. nickels. My point is that I doubt these have any real legs to them; still for 13.95 not bad.

They made an executive decision from Polling results to **not** come out and actually say 'Sold Out' as it turned off customers, so instead the Mint decided to soft peddling the phrase 'Sold Out' with the phrase "Out of Stock" which really means 'Sold Out', but allows the uninitiated some hope.
I swear to God! I read that in a month-old (or so) CoinWorld Article.
Every statement from a Fed Govt. Agency requires a Parsing calculation to figure out the obvious.
" From 11-24-2014 CoinNews:
"Currently, the set’s product page is showing that they are "out of stock." This does not mean they have sold out. Here’s how the Mint describes the status: Out Of Stock: When products are in an "Out of Stock" status, this means we do not have inventory of the product and we do not have an anticipated in stock date. Products in this status cannot be ordered online or through our customer contact center, but you can request to be reminded when the product will be returning to sale (through the "Remind Me" function on the product detail page.)" ------------ From Mint News Blog 12-8-2014;
[START] "With the change over to the US Mint’s new website, there has been less emphasis placed on sold out products making them less readily apparent. Shortly after the new website was launched, I had inquired about the removal of the sold out section which had previously been used for the old website. I had received a response that during the discovery process before the new online catalog was launched, it was decided to move away from a specific sold out section. Rather, sold out products would be indicated with a flag and then removed from the online catalog after a certain amount of time.
Currently, the Mint’s website is showing the sold out coins flagged as “Out of Stock” but with a new bullet point at the top of the product page which states in red “This product is sold out and no longer available for sale.” " [END]

...and this issue proves that statement also to be incorrect since they have been OOS multiple times and always returned from the dead....so it doesn't "really mean" sold out...no freakin idea what it DOES mean though
Ok if you owned this Co. would you put sold out sing or out of stock. Will any more buyers come back looking if you put sold out? Not as many But if you put out of stock they will keep coming back for a look and then they can sell off all the return's and have a total sell out. I'm thinking that is why the off, on is going on they get back 200 or 300 of them back then box them up and out they go again if no one sends them back in 7 day's it's a done deal and less for the next guy.
Just took the U.S. Mint Survey from Naxion that was sent to my email.
I complained that the FIFO policy was not being implemented. That Dec 10 orders were being shipped before Dec 4 orders. At least they know.
This probably happened because they implemented the 5 per household limit which is understandable. But the household limit was not set for the Dec 4 ordering window and I feel I should not be penalized for that. But it the U.S. Mint. They do what they want.
What is really "unfair" about not shipping out our December 4 orders yet is that we couldn't/can't order any sets after that date once the household order limit was implemented. If we tried to order more, we're told the household order limit has already been met and even if the system did let it through we'd risk losing out on all of our orders by trying to get more once the limit was posted.
So, at a minimum, the Mint should give those with December 4 orders that are on backorder 5 sets; otherwise, those folks are going to get stuck with none at all, but they really should give them all that were ordered as there was no limit at the time.

I could see where if they minted 50k they'd want to oversell these like the HOFs so there are none lingering on the site for weeks.

And when did you think this was in any way a fair game?
Most of us know that the USM has the right, at any time, to limit orders. It has happened before. It has happened to me a few times.
I patiently watched an item that was available thru 12/31, sales figures, weekly growth rates, on a product with no limits at all. Hit the site for 300 units (3 orders) on the last day. Got an email that stated they had the product, but it would had to be more "fairly allocated". How many did I get? Zero. All three orders cancelled.

I ordered 22 at 715a and got the expedited shipping for zilch....
...both our "expedited" orders got stuffed behind the "smart"post already shipped orders of 5 from the 10th which will be in those buyers hands before ours' see a shipping box
Well, just Love coins, period.
<< <i> The mintage of 50k certainly puts this issue WAY behind the 1997 matte nickel. >>
Yes, and way ahead that of the 2011 RP ASE but now we are not comparing apples to apples

Have you noticed that NOTHING on the Mint website says "sold out"...even the oldies that left the ordering world some time ago....they all say "out of stock". They are obviously using the OOS term to mean two different things since this beast has been OOS a few times but not sold out. I don't know what they have against the reality of "sold out"

Actually, if you look at the listing on the "out of stock" oldies, it stated:
"This product is sold out and no longer available for sale."

"Currently, the set’s product page is showing that they are "out of stock." This does not mean they have sold out. Here’s how the Mint describes the status:
Out Of Stock: When products are in an "Out of Stock" status, this means we do not have inventory of the product and we do not have an anticipated in stock date. Products in this status cannot be ordered online or through our customer contact center, but you can request to be reminded when the product will be returning to sale (through the "Remind Me" function on the product detail page.)"

From Mint News Blog 12-8-2014;

Hoard the keys.
Box of 20
So, at a minimum, the Mint should give those with December 4 orders that are on backorder 5 sets; otherwise, those folks are going to get stuck with none at all, but they really should give them all that were ordered as there was no limit at the time.

<< <i>Ok if you owned this Co. would you put sold out sing or out of stock.
I could see where if they minted 50k they'd want to oversell these like the HOFs so there are none lingering on the site for weeks.
it was not.
but i suppose it might be getting closer.
I'm thinking 41k

And when did you think this was in any way a fair game?
Most of us know that the USM has the right, at any time, to limit orders. It has happened before. It has happened to me a few times.
I patiently watched an item that was available thru 12/31, sales figures, weekly growth rates, on a product with no limits at all. Hit the site for 300 units (3 orders) on the last day. Got an email that stated they had the product, but it would had to be more "fairly allocated". How many did I get? Zero. All three orders cancelled.
