Its good to see Jackie Bradley Jr coming thru at the plate lately, heading into last night he's batted .319 since June 23 with 3hrs & 19rbi while raising his batting average from .189 to .210 heading into tonight's game.
No trade this good for one month a year bum for a pack of smokes
They wouldn't get anything of value for him when he's hitting .210. Most teams would probably view him as a 4th OF/defensive replacement type of player. I have no problem with him in Center & batting 9th. This lineup has plenty of hitting in it to allow JBJ to have his moments.

Bradley is #1 and Price is #0 and 3 is whoever is annoying me at any given moment that isn't those two dungheaps. Someone who can't run bases usually
Ya we will get first and if he hasn't melted into a puddle of goo Sale will pitch game one and maybe win and we don't have a guy for game two so then we are tied 1-1 then we don't have a guy for game 3 or 4 so we are waxing up our golf clubs
Looks like the Yankees made a deal for Zach Britton from the O's. Their bullpen is gonna be brutal to face come playoff time.
edit: Sox made a deal for Ray's starter Nathan Eovaldi
**"Eovaldi, 28, returned this season following Tommy John surgery performed in August 2016, going 3-4 with a 4.26 ERA in 10 starts. He started 2018 on the disabled list after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on the elbow at the end of spring training.
Seems to me...and, no, I haven't researched the MLB rule, but...

However, when a games is "postponed", it's like it never happened. I can see several serious implications of this rule, most of them negative. In the case of the Sox/Orioles last night, the 5-0 lead is erased and the 3 home runs are erased. IMO, the postponed game, when rescheduled, should resume at the same point (pitcher being the exception) of where the game was called.
As an example: Assume its a one game playoff, say a wild card situation. Given last night's game, with the Red Sox up 5-0, and apparently cruising to a win, vs the game is erased and played the next day. The previous day's losing team, now wins that game. The implications are huge in pennant race situations, not too mention home run stats, among others.
There must be some logic to zeroing out everything last night, but I just don't see the benefit in doing so. The Orioles could care less (in this case), they're 41.5 games back, but, the half game loss to the Red Sox, could have implications in late September.
Damn Devers to the DL again with a strained hamstring last night. He just came off the DL not to long ago. They barely have any tradeable prospects for a reliever and now they might be looking for another 3rd baseman.

If I'm guessing, the pitchers probably feel more comfortable with Leon behind the plate calling the game than Swihart. Dombrowski doesn't have much time to decide on sticking with Swihart &Holt at third or try to find a better replacement for Devers. Strained hamstrings can be a PITA and even though he went on the 10 day DL doesn't mean his injury won't linger.

There's talk here in Boston that the Sox might be interested in trading for Adrian Beltre to play third. He has a no-trade clause and what he's owed for the rest of the season, roughly 6M, would put the Sox in luxury tax territory. I'd rather see them use any/all prospects on adding a bullpen arm or two.
If there was a position that was the opposite of a DH maybe he could stay on the roster. At the moment though I'd rather see whoever is pitching bat than him

I like the Kinsler pickup but Swihart's value probably won't get any higher than it is today which happens to be the trade deadline. If he does get dealt hopefully a legit setup man comes back in return. Kinsler over Beltre saved them just over 4M,normally I could care less when it comes to their payroll but from everything I've been reading they're trying hard to not take back much in salary.
I think they have done all they intend to do on the trade market for now. They have gotten what they really needed already and have stayed under the payroll limit. Thornberg was the missing piece. Swihart is too valuable a player to give away for nothing as he will prove to be the better hitter of the 3 catchers. He has vastly improved his catching abilities. Vasquez and Leon are good backup catchers but the sox need a better hitting one so give Swihart a chance and see if he can do the job as he is a very athletic player and capable of doing it.
I guess we'll see how it goes today. He & Devers are literally their best two prospects and Devers isn't going anywhere. It's great to see Swihart finally contributing but there is no way Cora makes him the full time catcher over Leon or Vasquez when he comes back. When it comes to hitting from a catcher, I put that third behind how he calls a game and defense. Not to mention they're not losing games because of who is behind the plate,or in center field as some others like pointing out. What does cost this team wins is their bullpen giving up leads and if Dombrowski doesn't add any bullpen help by the end of today it will be an epic fail on his part IMO. Adding a part time 2nd baseman is a temporary fix until Devers comes back. Adding Eovaldi was a solid move just for the fact he's better than any other pitcher they threw out there as the fifth starter. I got nothing against Swihart it's just he's become their best expendable asset at the worst possible time.

I know this is a Red Sox thread, but you have to be iimpressed with that Aaron Nola from Philadelphia. Let's see if Pomeranz can get his curve ball down in the zone tonight. Thank goodness the Philly bats are a little soft since their series in Cincinnati. I expect the Sox to unload on Arrieta tonight. His kind of pitching style is suited for the Sox lineup.
That was a pretty great pitching duel last night between Nola & Price. We Sox fans love ripping Price, and deservedly so, but he kept them in the game for 8 innings which isn't always the case lol.
Price can pitch well if he puts his mind to it and right now he is.
Eovaldi could be the bullpen piece if Pomerance shows improvement tonight or could be the bullpen piece.
I really doubt they will spring for another pitcher unless it won't increase their payroll like Kinsler.
It is clear Pedroia is not coming back this year and the sox can afford Kinsler if he improves their defense at second.
Pomeranz is crap and is only starting til Rodriguez gets back. Putting him in the bullpen doesn't fix their problems.
Eovaldi might but why take him out of the rotation when he's clearly better than the 4th & 5th starters with Rodriguez out.
As for the luxury tax, they're in the midst of arguably their greatest regular season ever and their Achilles heal is their bullpen. They're the Boston Red Sox and can afford to go into the luxury tax for one season. Their payroll will settle itself in the off-season. The real reason Dombrowski thinks they're all done dealing is because he's traded away all of their best prospects while not being able to replace them thru the draft.
Kinsley was a decent pickup but second base defense wasn't a problem, third base was. Once Devers comes back he'll be back starting and if they really needed late inning defense they could have just had Nunez slide to 3rd with Holt going to 2nd. Kinsler will only be needed for a couple weeks and isn't some replacement for Pedroia when it's been well known this team wasn't getting anything from him this season.
Devers coming back from a hamstring problem could stretch out if they rush him back. He also needs to correct his throwing problems too. Nunez is quite capable of handling third base and Kinsler is a decent second baseman and can sure hold down that position. Knee problems like Pedroia has can be career ending. I hope that is not the case as he is very important to the sox. I myself doubt Pomerance is going to come through for them but there is always a possibility so we shall see. The trade deadline is just a formality anyway as teams always find a way around it anyway. Trading Swihart now for some other piece nobody wants would be a huge mistake. As you say they don't have many quality players left in the minors. One way or another these things will work themselves out.
I'm not trying to knock Swihart he's just their best tradeable asset right now who has been playing his best ball the past week plus. I just want to see the GM go all in with this team by adding another bullpen arm. Playing the waiver game later will be tough when they literally will be the bottom team able to put in a claim seeing they'll probably still have the best record in baseball. Houston and NY can pretty much block them from claiming certain players. Get a deal done today and you don't have to worry about all that not to mention adding money now or a month from now really won't make much difference.
Their defense outside of third has been great and even with Devers 20 errors, the team just has 50 total putting them 6th best in baseball. Cora has shown he's willing to let him figure things out on his own in the majors. His power numbers more than make up for his defensive deficiencies.
We only have three hours to go so we'll see if anything else happens.
I just feel that the current catching corp is a problem that needs to be addressed along with Devers problems. He will be a great player but needs to correct the problems now and not struggle with it. When he comes back from the disabled list he could spend a couple of weeks or so in Pawtucket working on it . Nunez is a good third basement and can hold down the fort until Devers comes back. I have no problem with trading Swihart but don't want to see him go to another team and tear it up. Trade Pomerance to somebody as there are plenty of buyers out there looking for starting pitching. I will be watching NESN this afternoon to see what our GM comes up with. The ball is in his court now.
They're not gonna send Devers to the minors when he gets back. He just came back from injury a couple weeks ago and wasn't sent down. The most Cora will do regarding his defense is what he's done at times this season, take him out late in games then slide Nunez or Holt to third but even then that might not happen because of what he brings to the plate. If the Sox are up in a close game, sure take him out but if it's a game like Friday night where they needed a big hit, his homer in the 9th tied it,you can't take his bat out of the lineup.
I understand but I would just as soon get the problem fixed before the playoffs and not have it pop its ugly head up when the playoffs begin as it would become too late then. I agree that they most likely won't do it but they should.
Well, the big 4 begins tonight. If the Yankees play as poorly as they did yesterday, things should go very well. Gleybar Torres, had a mental melt down at 2nd base. How can you not anticipate what to do if the batter hits the ball this way or that way? I watched a good part of the game, and it looked to me like Torres was on another planet, other than the home runs, he helped the lowly Orioles to control the game. The camera showed one of the Yankees coaches doing a Billy Martin special in the dugout. I guess they thought the Orioles would be a pushover...not so!! Getting 5 runs in one inning was impressive against the mighty Yankees in the Bronx.
Bad news that Sale is out for the series...stranger yet, is that Happ is scheduled to pitch Saturday for the Yankees, but has been diagnosed with foot, hand and mouth disease...as in why doesn't he just recuperate at home and be put on the DL? If he contracted it from kids at a camp, can't he spread it also?? I understand it's a 2 week process to get through.
Should be some good baseball and a treat for those fortunate enough to tix to the games. I'm committed to a local poker game tonight, but I'll be checking things on my cell phone.
Thanks Orioles!! 5.5 up, even if they split the 4 games, it'll remain the same.
I really like that the Yankees have to have that big scoreboard in their face in left field. That 5.5 must irritate no end.
Great team win. That bottom of the fourth was a thing of beauty especially JBJ's dive at the plate. Its too bad they pitched around Pierce that last at-bat,would have loved to see him hit that 4th homer.
A great spanking of the Bronx team...up 4-0 and kaboom. The team is on fire, hopefully a couple more wins. I LOVE that the Yankees have to look at the American League East standings...now 6.5

Back in the 90's when NY was a dynasty with the Sox basically their btch my fellow Red Sox fans were saying this then. I think babies in this area we're taught to say mama, dada & yankees suck for their first words.
Last night the Yankees played like a glorified beer league team. Not convinced that Aaron Boone has the teams attention. Just really sloppy, not what past Yankee managers would tolerate.

No deals for Boston by the deadline.

Sometimes no deals are the best deals and I feel that that is the case this time.
I don't but it is what it is at this point.
Lets hope Pomeranz doesn't get pounded again tonight.

GO SOX
Great team win. That bottom of the fourth was a thing of beauty especially JBJ's dive at the plate. Its too bad they pitched around Pierce that last at-bat,would have loved to see him hit that 4th homer.

A great spanking of the Bronx team...up 4-0 and kaboom. The team is on fire, hopefully a couple more wins. I LOVE that the Yankees have to look at the American League East standings...now 6.5
Great win.
