    Last year's doesn't have a 2017-S eagle.
    If this has a 50k mintage it'll last < 3 minutes.

I walked a sealed box of 15 of the 2017 Congratulations Sets around the Macomb Coin Show very very soon after the 2 minute sellout. I got yawns and indifference and took my only offer of $75 each. These new sets with the old Coins will make you rich !

The 2016 Set is still available @ $139.95 + shipping from the Mint with a max mintage of 50k. As mentioned before, they can be had for less on eBay.

    I always disliked this set.

2017 Congrats set: $54.95, 2017 Silver Proof set: $47.95. Total: $102.90. That's $37.05 less than the LE set, and you don't even get the cent, nickel and brassbuck! Not to mention the size of the package, a problem for those of us who are spatially challenged.

If I needed the 2017S, I'd buy one, but since I already have a few...

Depends on the mintage.....medal set depends on the mintage. Probable won't go for both

Plus - attractive S mint ASE
Minus - same ASE on ebay for $20 less than the whole set

Minus seems to outweigh the Plus.

Unknown to discuss - will there be 2 different registry set labels required for the ASE set - congrats & LE set ??

Dunno, if you want a raw S-Mint ASE and don't want to pay the $130 for a searched example, getting it plus $24 in silver melt for $145 isn't bad.

But if you already have a 2017-S, then the price premiums suck.

Minus seems to outweigh the Plus.

Depends on how you approach it. Since I already have a few 2017-S's, this set doesn't have a lot of appeal to me.

  • dmwestdmwest Posts: 959 ✭✭✭✭

So this means the 2017-S ASE mintage is 125,000? Where does that fall in rarity for the ASE?

    D2

    Don't quote me on that.

  • ernie11ernie11 Posts: 1,970 ✭✭✭✭✭

I think the last I saw, the 2011-P Reverse Proof and 2011-S Unc. had 99,882 listed as their mintage. The 1995-W is around 30,000 and the 2008-W reverse of 2007 is circa 47,000. Other than these four, the 2017-S is the lowest mintage.

2d lowest after the 1995W... I guess I should have spelled it out...IT IS THE SECOND LOWEST REGULAR MINTED PROOF ASE. (That does not include all the variations i/e rev. proofs, unc, or rev of 07)

In "rarity for the ASE" the 2011 S and RP are lower at 100k (actually a tad under). For PROOFS it will be the #2

Hmmm...so, let me get this straight. In terms of rarity:

    1995-W (30,000)
    2008-W reverse of 07 (approx. 50,000)
    2011-S (approx 100,000)
    2011-P Rev proof (approx. 100,000)
    2017-S (125,000)

Current prices of actual sales on eBay:

    1995-W - $3500
    2008-W reverse of 07 - $450 to $800
    2011-S - $180-$200
    2011-P Rev Proof - $300 to $400
    2017-S ($140 at the Mint)

Why do I feel like 125,000 is enough to guarantee that $140 is too much in the long run?

  • bluelobsterbluelobster Posts: 1,220 ✭✭✭

Ultimately this set has some value because of the ASE. Not a big value, but some.

I think most everyone in this issue who wants one, has one. I didn't even bother making this a forum topic until they announced the price.

But it is good to know the mint didn't do something stupid like going 100-150K sets.

Well, you do get $24 in silver (at today's spot) with that, so it's really only $116.

That said, it was really a better bargain at $55 in the congrats set. I think this coin will do okay until the mint undercuts this mintage with another. (That could be next year if the Mint continues to use S-Mint ASE's in the congrats and LE sets...)

As usual MsMorrisine has the key point...

Will collectors need to have both because they'll be labeled congratulations 2017-S and LE 2017-S.

    IE - is this 1 of 125,000 or 1 of 50,000?

Most collectors don't have registry sets and will probably be fine with just one coin.
Also, many collectors just buy the annual proof silver eagle and ignore the special sets and mintmarks.

The thing about the list below is that, unless someone is going by the registry, or is completely OCD, the "2008-W reverse of 07" may not be that interesting.
    I am one of those.
I came in too late for the 1995-W (was already over $3000 when I started collecting them) but I have all the rest. Started adding in plastic (PCGS) along with raw, until 2012. Got tired of all the different labels. So, I still have them, but I focus on the raw now. Proof and Unc.

There are more like me, I am sure. Just as there are those that HAVE TO HAVE everything that is a label or "different".

That said, to me, the 2017-S is better to have than the '08 rev of '07 (heck, I don't even like other denoms that are just "rev of some other year".

I was mostly looking at price versus mintage. Notice that the price gets less as the mintage gets bigger, including the 08 reverse of 07. The 2011-S is actually 20% scarcer than the 2017-S and it's only $180-ish. Just seems to me like at 125,000, there won't be any long term price appreciation. But, time will tell....

I think 125k is a decent number for an ASE with regards to future price appreciation

"Burnished" silver eagles have less of a following than proofs, as is reflected in their lower mintages and aftermarket prices, so they're not directly comparable. Both of the proofs in this list (1995-W, 2011-P reverse proof) were each obtainable in only a single set, while the 2017-S mintage is split between two sets, so some collectors will want one specimen from each set, driving up demand. For these reasons, I think that $140 (minus $23 melt value of the other coins in the LE set) is not too much in the long run.

By the way, proof Kennedy halves from the previous LE sets routinely bring more than 4x melt in the aftermarket, even in PR69.

It all depends on whether anyone cares if their 2017-S Eagle comes from an LE proof set instead of the Congratulations set. The 2017-S Eagles are all over eBay for $100 in PCGS 69 or ANACS 70. The release of this set will almost double the number available. So, I would guess that if people just want a 2017-S Eagle, this set will plummet. If people want BOTH a Congratulations set one and an LE set one then this one will be the better set at 50,000 vs. 75,000.

Of course, that said, you can buy Congratulations sets for $120-$130 on eBay right now.

By the way, I did talk to one of my wholesale people. There is buy currently at about $180 on these sets. I presume that is due to the HHL and people trying to fill orders. So, there IS a flip, but make sure you don't hold it too long.

In my ever humble opinion, of course.

[Truth in advertising: I will be flipping 2 or 4 myself.]

See I am different I am just hording and one day when they come to whisk me away they will find this big safe full of worthless graded 70 coins. At that point I wont really care what they are worth I just buy for the chase of it! Nothing more if I make a profit 20 + years from now so be it. If its a loss so be it. But I had fun buying them all!

At that point I wont really care what they are worth I just buy for the chase of it! Nothing more if I make a profit 20 + years from now so be it. If its a loss so be it. But I had fun buying them all!

That is the best attitude to have. That said, you can often get the same coins at lower prices if you show some patience...not your strong suit, I know.

Will there be a flip on this?

I've never bought specifically to resell, but since I have little interest in this set, I may pick one up.

Demand seems to be there, but it's hard to tell if it's real or not...

    Yep on Ebay right now plummeting for $129.00 or lower all day you can get;
2017-S Proof Silver Eagle - Congratulations Set NGC PF69 UC or
2017-S Proof Silver Eagle - Congratulations Set NGC PF69 UC Early Releases (Black Core Holder - San Francisco Label)
2017-S Proof Silver Eagle - Congratulations Set NGC PF69 UC Early Releases (Black Core Holder - Trolley Label)
2017-S Proof Silver Eagle - Congratulations Set NGC PF69 UC Early Releases (San Francisco Label)
2017-S Proof Silver Eagle - Congratulations Set NGC PF69 UC Early Releases (Exclusive U.S. Mint 225th Anniversary Label)
2017-S Proof Silver Eagle - Congratulations Set NGC PF69 UC First Releases (Trolley Label)

I imagine after tomorrow these should be down 20% to 30% lower with the release of 50,000 more 2017 S Proof Silver Eagle's into our hands! Its a buyers market we are In- Control!!! Yea Baby!
