Some new additions to the collection. First up, a stamp:
I have no idea how scarce these stamps are, but I do know there are almost no graded copies. This is one of 8 copies of this stamp sitting in a PSA slab and there are no PSA 10's.
Edited to add: Yaz is also on stamp #31 in this set, also 8 total graded copies.
Another interesting note: PSA labels these as 1983, but Beckett and the seller both say they're sure these were issued in '82.
Next up, a 1974 Topps Deckle Edge proof.
Obviously the proofs don't have the deckle edging of the regular issue. Most of you probably know this, but the '74 Deckle cards were much larger than their '69 Deckle ancestors. These measure about 3" wide x 5.25" tall. The regular issue cards and the proofs can both be found with either gray backs or white backs. This is obviously a white back. I've always liked the design of the backs. I'm disappointed that the front is slightly miscut in both directions, but it's a tough enough item that I'm still happy to have it.
Awesome Yaz collection! Stuff from everywhere. For a while, I was collecting everything for Clemente like that. The oddest is probably a loaf of bread wrapper I have. What's the oddest Yaz item you have?
Hey Moose! Rocco! Help the Judge find his checkbook, will ya!
Good question. I don't think I have anything as odd as a bread wrapper. I've got some pins and a pennant and other than that is mostly media guides, yearbooks, cards, postcards, stamps and stickers.
flatfoot816 (Manny) has the #1 Yaz master set and he has some odder items, usually ungraded, like a bread wrapper and a placemat. Somebody on here had a Yaz Christmas ornament.
Thanks for reading the thread. Keep the Clemente posts coming!
OK, before I get into the coolest of my new Yaz additions, as well as the related mystery, I want to show the other notable new additions. First, this PSA 10 Yaz for my basic and master registries. This puts me at 50% on the basic registry. I haven't focused specifically on the early or the late stuff and so far seem to have a nice mix. Here's the card:
Not too long ago I went through the entire 1977 Topps set, looking at the back of each one in search of a cartoon featuring Yaz. There were none in that set, but Kyle found this in the 82 Topps set and sent it to me in our latest of many bulk trades:
OK, and here is the newest item. It was a very generous gift from CU member jackstraw. I think it's super cool, I'm in love with it, and I can't thank him enough! Before I get any more long winded, I'll show the item:
Does anybody know what this is? It's a sealed team set of some sort. It's definitely from 1971, since that's the only season when these 12 players all intersected in Boston. Other collectors have agreed with me on this point.
They measure 7" x 8.75". They are not 1971 Arco Oil. These are too small and don't have the facsimile signature. The Beckett Almanac lists a 1971 Sox team issue, but these are too big, and these have the names at the bottom, while the team issue I found in the book has the names at the top. I don't have a copy of SCD, but maybe somebody out there does. This still could be a different team issue, I guess.
As you can see, there are no company logos or markings of any kind. There is a MLB logo on the player checklist, so it appears to be a licensed product. I'm assuming these are blank backed, but since I don't want to open it, I'm not sure of that. These are too large for any PSA slab, so I won't be grading them. I plan to leave them sealed and buy a top loader to protect them.
Do any of you have any idea what these are or who I could talk to who might know? I was first introduced to this forum in researching another mystery 1970's Red Sox issue, and my CU brethren were able to help me then. I'm hoping the collective wisdom will help me out again.
Thanks in advance for your help..... and thanks again John for the unique, good looking, and all around super cool addition to my collection!

I have a pdf file of the 2009 SCD (came with the book and the only reason I bought it).
I just did a complete search for Duane Josephson, figuring that would be the easiest way to find a set he was in, and came up with nothing as far as an item like this.
Sorry man, was hoping I was onto something as you don't see the name Duane Josephson every day.
Kept looking for a while with Google for various players in the set and came up empty - I did find this though that lists 1354 Yaz cards/items with tons of pics that might come in handy for you in the future (if you don't already have it)
Dan, Good luck solving the mystery. BTW I just noticed your Yaz. Deckle proof. That is not an easy one to find congrats on landing that it. I was just looking at a Bench 74 Deckle proof but did not pull the trigger.

I agree it looks quite similar, but note that the photo is cropped differently (around the waist/at bottom). Add that to the fact that Aparicio's first season in Boston was 1971 and that's not it. But it increases the odds that this is a team issue that recycled that photo.
These are great leads, guys! Between the same photo and general layout as 69 team issue and same checklist as 1970 team issue, I agree that these must have been issued by the team. Any more clues?
Edited to add: the set Jim posted is a confusing one. My research (Beckett) agrees that it's a 1970 issue. But Aparicio didn't play a game with the Sox until 1971. I'm guessing the set was issued in November or December of 1970. It's also the last team issued set including Lonborg.
I used to have what was supposedly a 1971 Boston Red Sox team issue of Sonny Siebert (1971 was general consensus after as much research as I could do, though one person did suggest 1973 instead of 1971). The measurements and rest of the description seem to match yours. I sold it to someone a couple years ago, but I located a scan that was not centered on the scanner bed properly. See below:
Edit to try to fix link, but it looks like photobucket is having issues for some reason.
Looks like there's a seller with three singles of these (Lyle, Josephson, & Culp): Link Listed as a team issue and "Very very hard to find." You might try contacting them to see if they have any additional info.
ETA: Another has the Conigliaro listed as a 72 (and no that Kyle isn't me): Link

Great tips, thanks Kyle! I've contacted both sellers. I noticed the Conigliaro listing says near the bottom that it could be a 1971 issue. I also noticed the same seller had photos of Tigers and Yankees players that look to have the same layout. That makes me wonder whether it was a national company producing sealed team sets for each local market. I wish the Beckett Almanac had an index by year so I could check for other 1971 issues I haven't thought/heard of.
It's likely it was a single company producing for many teams, similar to Jay Publishing in the 60s. From Beckett's online lookup, the Mets also had a 'Team Issue Color' set in 71 that seems to line up with the Red Sox size (7x8.75).
ETA: This guy has several White Sox that look like the same issue as well: Link and the Conigliaro seller has Indians also.

John aka Jackstraw is a good guy - I've known him a long time - and they don't come any better.
This is what makes the collecting game so unique. No mention of $$$ anywhere, just the thrill of the hunt. Best to you Dan, and keep us posted. I haven't had this much anticipation since waiting for the Mad Men finale.
OK, I was content to let the thread die until my next pickups, but since people seem to want updates, here is the latest.
Both eBay sellers were kind enough to write back to me. One of them had no new more information, but one added some interesting details. It looks like the same layout was used for several years. The 1969 set miwlvrn linked earlier is the same size and design as my 1971 issue. This seller said he has a Fisk that looks just like these. That's notable because Fisk's rookie year was 1972, so that was issued after all the similar sets discovered earlier in this thread.
Thanks Mike. The card should have 360 degrees of perforations. This one looks to me like it was cut with scissors, not torn on the perforations. I'm not an expert on hand cut issues, but I suspect this would only get an "authentic" grade.

That's quite possible Dan.
It's quite possible that's how PSA would see it.
I'm guessing this is for the registry - so you want one that's gonna get a grade.
Might be worth it to keep an eye out for a perforated card - these do not come up in quantity on ebay from what I can see?
As many of you know, meeting Yaz last November was a huge day for me. That day, I had him sign his '69 Topps card. After a couple of months of round trip to PSA and back, I finally received it back today in a slab. I am beyond thrilled! This is easily one of the 2 or 3 cornerstone pieces of my collection:
Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
Thanks fellas. My last post was actually understated compared to the excitement I feel. If somebody told me I had to get rid of my whole collection except one card, that one might be the one I'd keep.
