<< <i>Ya know....all this frustration with shipped vs. backordered and FS date grief could have been eliminated by just waiting until ALL the coins were manufactured, packaged and ready for shipping before the shipping of ANY coins. sigh.

The Baltimore release did not start the First Strike clock, nor the Early Release clock.

The mint couldn't (and still doesn't) know how many proofs and uncirculated coins have to be made. Only that a total of 40K Au and 400K Ag will be sold. The mint won't know the true PF/MS split until most of the coins are shipped. (There will be cancellations and returns.) Minting and shipping all the coins at once wouldn't be possible. And seriously, have 100K to 200K boxes stored and shipped all at once? Talking about a clusterfunk waiting to happen... >>

Re: Baltimore release....I said that it did not start the clock...no reason to sigh

Re: 2nd point.....the 2012 San Fran Silver Eagle set was "Mint to demand" for a month. No orders were shipped until the final tally was in (around 250k "boxes stored and shipped"

No reason they couldn't have taken orders up to the limit and shipped at a later date....no reason at all

I believe, Congressional approval would have been required to change what Congress dictates for commems. That requirement was not needed for the ASE 2012 or 2013 sets.

I didn't think Congress decried that some orders get shipped and some get put into eternal limbo. I would think they are more into the composition, design, quantity and cost issues not the actual delivery of the product. This rests solely on the Mint.....

True...but your Mint on Demand reference, does require congressional approval.

This is untrue. From my order history:

First day sales, 2012 ASE set:
    Order number: 396xxxxx
Order Date: 06/07/2012 at 12:03 PM
    2012 AE SILVER 2-COIN SET 3 $149.95 $449.85 3 units shipped on 07/27/2012

Last day sales (or close), 2012 ASE set:
    Order number: 399xxxxx
Order Date: 07/05/2012 at 01:44 AM
    2012 AE SILVER 2-COIN SET 2 $149.95 $299.90 2 units shipped on 10/08/2012

First day sales, 2013 ASE set:
    Order number: 414xxxxx
    Order Date: 05/09/2013
    2013 AM EAGLE SILVER 2-COIN SET (WP) 3 $139.95 $419.85 3 units shipped on 06/28/2013

Last day sales (or close), 2013 ASE set:
    Order number: 417xxxxx
Order Date: 06/06/2013 at 02:14 PM
    2013 AM EAGLE SILVER 2-COIN SET (WP) 2 $139.95 $279.90 2 units shipped on 09/12/2013

Note for both sets, if you ordered the last day, it took the mint three months to get the coins to you. They were *not* all boxed and ready to go at one time.

Note that I'm not picking on you, BigA, but as more and more are getting frustrated at the mint over the HOF coins, I'm seeing a lot of... historical inaccuracies... image

Well the good news now is that the shipping dates have not changed at all but the bad news is nothing is shipping and the shipping dates are far enough out so they don't have to change them every day.image

<< <i>I find it distasteful what seems to be a new trend to create a separate population line for autographs. New trend?

When did PCGS start putting out Mercanti labels? I know they had a bunch of Moy $20 UHR's 5 years ago. (Yes, the UHR was 5 years ago.) Probably others... >>

I am not sure when PCGS started listing autographed labels in the populations. I think the labels are alright, in fact I believe I have a couple Buffalo silver commems with a signature but to list them separately in the populations is more about the autographs than the coin in my opinion.

I knew the MS would 70, I thought at least one proof would and one proof had three 1.5 cm scuff marks that I though assured a low ball grade of 67 or maybe even 66. There is no way anyone looked closely at the lowball prospect!

    Unbelievable.
And I ain't lying this time.

Is it really worth having these graded? What are PR69's going for? The only one winning around here is the host it seems.

Using current eBay prices for raw coins and considering the low % of 70s reported here, it looks like a better idea to sell the HOF raw on eBay right now while the prices are high. The tough choice is for those that want 70s for their collection and still have sealed boxes. In that case probably better to grade the coins and hope for a decent % of 70s (be sure to request getting the capsules and OGP back) I'd decide once the coins were back if I was selling 69s or coins back in their OGP.
    I got 3/5 proof$5 , 0/2 unc $5 and 4/5 proof $1 back as PCGS 70s

GOLD PROOF 70'S POPULATION JUMPED BY OVER 450. At current percentage that would be over 600 coins submitted to get that many 70's

No matter what you think, the numbers do not lie. While many got few or no coins, a few got many coins.

Goldbully - Thanks for posting the PCGS population reports. There's lots of data and many thoughts.

    Here are some thoughts:

    1. PCGS might be in the peak of its grading of HOF Baseball coins. Previous posts noted that their grading took about a month and the latest posts suggest that the grading time has decreased to 3 weeks.

    2. In any event, we can expect that the First Strike populations to grow until about mid to late June when the rush to meet the May 6th First Strike deadline is processed. That would leave only those HOF coins "entombed" in sealed boxes left to grade.

    3. I continue to believe that the First Strike label is the most valuable label since it clearly marks the delineation of the original mintage and the subsequent mintage.

    4. The grading percentage of 70's has been awesome. (apologies to some recent posts.) The percentages are like what one might expect of a presentation striking. Since this was a first time striking a curved coin, perhaps the US Mint took great care to strike them. We have criticized their shipping problems but maybe we should compliment the US Mint on the quality of the HOF coins (except for the clad coins.)

    5. The population increase has lowered the market price of the HOF silver dollars. See those offered by moderncoinmart.

    6. Since I am waiting for my HOF silver dollar coins (early August) , I can only hope that the condition is as good as it has been for these First Strikes or original strikes.

Bravo Gold bully for your posting of the population reports.

The biggest increase in total graded coins by type came for the PF $1 silver with 1,544 followed by the MS $1 at 544. Larges single coin increase by grade was again the PF $1 at 855.

I see my MS 68 $5 got counted as that grade went from 1 to 2 population. imageimage

    I agree with ebizgobro's observations.

"Let's face it, those angered to the extent I've read on various forums - are generally the flippers.

They missed the best flip in years and are angry."

Yeah, some who repeatedly cursed the Mint here for delayed shipping now seem to be the first to flip offering in stock and reserved pre sales!

Now we know why they were so upset and vocal.

My silver were "In stock and reserved" for 10 days before they shipped. I don't think the gold will be that long..........I hope. Seems my orders ALWAYS "ship" on Thursdays (actually just a label is created, they pick them up on Friday) which totally voids the 2nd day Air thingy

    Oh NO!!! Not This !!!!image

Checked my order which was in stock and reserved but status said on hold. Called customer service and it was credit card problem.

Last week my credit card was hacked and the bank alerted me and cancelled the card. Over the weekend I changed

cards on the mint site, however that was not enough. The CSR was verry helpful and said existing orders had to have

a manual correction by the customer service dept. They were trying to charge old card and it was declined. She said it was ready

to ship and to watch for UPS tracking #. I hope this does not delay my shipping.image

Chalk that one up to the mint too.
They delayed shipment long enough for the credit card people to screw up the transaction.
I hope it straightens out ok for you.
How many more of these things will we see before this fiasco is over with.

Sold a proof 70 gold $5 on ebay for the going price - noticed the buyer was a very prominent coin/bullion dealer....

Didn't know those guys were out lurking and buying at full retail? Kind of strange.

Is the price headed North? Is anyone aware of something we are not? Errors?
