@metaldetectinghound.... What a great story.... I laughed about your wife throwing quarters in the yard... got you to use the MD though....The 12 year totals are very impressive... the gold coin alone is a marvelous treasure.. did you keep it? Cheers, RickO
@ricko.... Yes, I kept it. I was a part-time coin dealer for about ten years and I knew the basic value of about everything I ever found. It was in at least extra fine condition or better. I bought a gold bezel and gold chain and my wears it as a necklace. She generally only wears it to church. I more than likely will never sell it.
Today I finally dug a coin that I think is worthy of a photo, my favorite find of the year so far.
I went to a site that I have made some good finds at in the past, probably haven't been there in over a year though. Almost immediately upon arrival I dug a 1925 Buffalo nickel. As is my custom and practice, whenever I find a deep old coin I slowly search the immediately surrounding area. A few feet away, I could just barely hear a deep high tone signal. It was a 1924-D Mercury dime in outstanding condition. I also dug a wheat cent today.
This is arguably the second best Mercury dime I've ever found. The best one I've ever dug was an essentially mint state 1919-D that came from this same site in June 2017.
How many times do we dig a deep old penny and wish it was a dime. Then you dig a dime you wish was a penny. But a Barber is always a good thing!!! Congratulations

Once again, great finds... and again, that is one super area you are searching.... old silver and nickels and wheaties...sounds as if it was a fairground or some such activity site....What a fun site to search. Cheers, RickO
Today's finds were a dateless Standing Liberty quarter and two wheat cents. I'll be posting a photo of the quarter shortly. I also dug up several sterling silver charms from an old charm bracelet and found a bunch of old bottles in a bulldozed area.
You did well on silver.... I do not know much about bottles, but I do know that some can be quite valuable. I assume there are bottle collecting sites you can look at for information. Cheers, RickO
I'm very pleased with today's finds: 1901 Indian Head cent, 1901 Barber dime, a very worn 1920 Mercury dime, a 1925 Buffalo nickel, and four wheat cents. I also brought home more old bottles today. Here's a photo of last week's Standing Liberty quarter and a couple of today's finds.
Today's finds were a 1954 quarter, a 1916 wheat cent, and an American-Indian-style-sterling-silver bracelet. I also brought home another bunch of old bottles.
I went back to the site where I did well last week. I found six more silver coins, including another 1897 half dollar, a coincidence that I can hardly believe. I also dug 16 wheat cents today, including a coin spill of four wheat cents dating from 1917 to 1929.
WOW!! A Barber half.... that is fantastic - among a fantastic haul... Lots of silver and some nice wheaties....You have an amazing site....Good luck with more finds. Cheers, RickO
Back to the good site today: 1912 Barber dime, 1943-S Mercury dime, 1946 dime, 1951 dime, and 1953-D dime. I also dug 18 wheat cents today, including a 1909. In addition to these coins I also dug a men's silver ring, an old trade token, and what I think is an artillery badge.
That is an amazing site you are working.....lots of silver and wheaties....and even a silver ring. I would sure like to know the history of that spot....Cheers, RickO
I took the day off work today and did some detecting: 1930 Mercury dime, 1964-D dime, 15 wheat cents, and a silver ring with Japanese characters on it.
Back to the good site today: 1937 Mercury dime, 1945 Mercury dime, 1945-D Mercury dime, 1951 dime, 18 wheat cents, and a silver ring.
I also found another blank slug the size of a large cent. That makes me suspect that neither of them is a large cent. It seems unlikely that two worn smooth large cents would be at the same site.
I also dug a pocket watch, the best preserved one I've ever dug. The hands are still intact, protected by a plastic crystal.
Today I assembled a new snow blower, did some outdoor painting, and took care of several other jobs around the house. I wasn't satisfied with yesterday's finds; so, I also went metal detecting today for about 90 minutes at a nearby location.
I found a 1943-D Mercury dime, a 1951 dime, and a wheat cent.

I am continually amazed at the amount of silver dimes you find....Cheers, RickO
Those last two put me at 350 U.S. silver coins found since 7/1/13, with 62 of them having been found this year.
It has been snowing here in Illinois for the last three days, a much earlier start to winter than usual. I don't know how much more detecting, if any, I'll be able to do this year.
The weather warmed up and all the snow melted. I went to my good site today.
I had my best day of metal detecting ever on September 21st; however, I think today may have been even better. Just like on September 21st, I dug ten silver coins today.
I'll post a list of all the coins later. The highlights are my first ever Barber quarter, a high condition Standing Liberty quarter, and a Walking Liberty half.
@Bayard1908....Holy moly guy.... Ten silvers.... that site is INCREDIBLE!!!....I look forward to your list...and maybe some pictures?....I would love to know the history of that site...has to be something special that was there...I have never heard of a site that produces that much except for the 'silver beach' often reported on here. Cheers, RickO
I like coin spills as a way of figuring out when coins were dropped. There was a 1945 wheat cent in the hole with the Barber quarter. There was also a 1958 wheat cent stuck to the more worn of the two 1944-D Mercury dimes.

Very nice. Plus not a mark on it Great to see you didn’t ruin it. You did a marvelous job of getting the dirt off
That is a sweet Merc.... Very nice condition....Must be more silver at that site...Do not give up. Cheers, RickO
I had a good day today: 1914-D Barber dime and a 1937 Buffalo nickel. The Barber dime is nice enough that I will post a photo someday soon.

Very nice...More silver.... Heck of a site. Cheers, RickO
I had my best day of metal detecting ever today: 10 silver coins, 2 Indian cents, 19 wheat cents, 2 silver crucifixes, and 2 old tokens.

That’s a great day of detecting. A Barber half. Go out and celebrate
Double wowsers... what a great day.... Congratulations... lots of silver and great coins. Cheers, RickO
Great haul!!

That site is pretty amazing! And the coins are in way better condition than I would have expected. Nice!
I wasn't able to visit my favorite new site today. Instead, I tried several new sites. I dug a 1951-D dime, 1956 quarter, and eleven wheat cents.
Those are promising new sites...two silvers and wheaties....Definitely calls for some return trips.

I will say it again, that site is a veritable treasure trove of silver and old coins....another ring too....Cheers, RickO
Rain interrupted my detecting, just a pair of wheat cents today.
Today I assembled a new snow blower, did some outdoor painting, and took care of several other jobs around the house. I wasn't satisfied with yesterday's finds; so, I also went metal detecting today for about 90 minutes at a nearby location.

I have finally edited my post from September 28, 2019 to add a photo of that day's finds.
In addition to yesterday's 10 silver coins, I also dug 27 wheat cents and a silver ring yesterday.
The silver coins are:
1943 Mercury dime
1944-D Mercury dime
1944-D Mercury dime
1946 dime
1946-D dime
1906-D Barber Quarter
1927 Standing Liberty Quarter
1934 Quarter
1944 Quarter
1942 Walking Liberty Half
I like coin spills as a way of figuring out when coins were dropped. There was a 1945 wheat cent in the hole with the Barber quarter. There was also a 1958 wheat cent stuck to the more worn of the two 1944-D Mercury dimes.
