A front row seat for the game deciding play and it's obvious you truly appreciated the moment.

Crabtree is right, it was only one play. A really *big* play to decide which NFC team would be represented in the Super Bowl but other than that, yeah, just one play.

A couple of nuggets about Richard Sherman:

He graduated from Stanford with a 3.9 GPA.

He heads a charity that provides clothes and school supplies to disadvantaged children.

It might be prudent to assimilate all info prior to attaching the "thug" label.

you'll never be able to outrun a bad diet

He also graduated second in his class at Manuel Dominguez HS, which is in Compton's school district.

On a related note, this is a good read.

<< <i>The point is, Richard Sherman, that unlikely hero, that Stanford honors student, that beautiful lunatic, is going to be the center of the biggest event in sports for the next two weeks. The more you research him, the more you learn about him, the more you understand where he his coming from … the more you get it. So many athletes claim they aren't respected, that they're misunderstood, that No One Believed In Them. Sherman has the benefit of being right about that. It drives him. All told, I can think of few better representatives of what football is about. >>

Sherman knocked the ball away but he ISN'T the one that intercepted it to seal the deal. If the ball isn't intercepted 49ers still have at least 2 more shots at the goal.

Did I want the Seahawks to win? Yes. Do I like Sherman's mouth? No. I was hoping for a New England matchup with them. I'll take Denver now. But Lynch will be the difference in the game.

Agreed. Based on my definition of a "thug", Sherman's life story up to this point would be the polar opposite.

Aaron Hernandez did charity work too.

"Hernandez will be hosting two events in the area on Friday to help put a spotlight on the lack of mental health professionals available to the Hispanic population in this country.

Fairly heady stuff for a football player who won’t turn 22 until November. But Hernandez didn’t hesitate when he was approached.

“I thought it would be a great opportunity since I’m Hispanic, and it’s just a great charity for me to be involved with because they’re geared toward training mental health specialists to work with the Hispanic population,’’ Hernandez said."

Because doing charity work automatically makes you a good guy.

Your input and constant desire to create confrontation isn't wanted here either, Axtell. So how about you go annoy the people over at Sports Hoopla or another venue and keep it a secret between your personalities.

Come on Stown, we both know what it means when a cornerback is not involved in a lot of plays. Usually means the opposing team is more interested in staying away from him than challenging him.

Correct. They threw at Sherman twice, the first was a borderline PI call and the other resulted in the game winning tip.

I agree, it does not. Just as chronic trash talking doesn't automatically make you a violent criminal.......i.e., a thug.

But if you're going to extrapolate, at least be consistent.

  • Please answer this question 1985fan.

You have said you condone the use of racial epithets.

You called an African-American a thug, thus showing how you like to use racial epithets on these very boards.

Please answer the question as to why you feel it's ok to use racial epithets in a civilized society.

    We welcome your racist comments.

    Thank you in advance.

    image you really wanna know?

i had to turn away. it wasn't just Sherman speaking as much as the entire NFL. the bravado behind the game action itself has changed everything. you folks can bicker over racism all you want. the game has segregated society as much as anything else. if you don't support your team to the nth degree, you're scum. the players feed into it. Sherman is happy to be the focal point of this victorious behavior, but now they've set him straight about how it's still about the team. good for them. just bring your "A" game to Jersey. that's all we should care about.

and of course my beloved Erin. image

Turns out that it seems it was Sherman, not Crabtree who tried to start the charity event fight:

"But a source who was at the Fitzgerald charity event—and who has no familial or professional relationship to Sherman or Crabtree—witnessed part of what happened and said it looked more like it was the other way around.

"The handshake part is legit," the source said, "but it was Sherman who tried to start the fight with Crabtree. I remember 'cause Sherman kept getting in his face and Crabtree was just laughing about it."

The acts of a good guy?

There is a time to be nice, and then sometimes there is a time to not be nice.

No problem at all with Sherman's outburst during the heat of the moment. Far better than all the boring cliche ridden sideline reports!

This is exactly why the NFL is going to put a stop to interviews moments after the game is over...

go get a cold shower and then talk about the game...

I blame the media and Erin for trying to be the first to get the spot...

this is exactly what they wanted...and they got it!

1985fan is being inconsistent regarding the terms "Redskins" and "thug".

It is shocking to see him so willingly use "thug" (which is viewed by many as racist) and apply the term to Sherman based upon what Sherman said during the post game interview and how he said it. His use of the term "thug" demeans and marginalizes an entire segment of society that has been marginalized and oppressed for centuries.

Shocking I tell you, just shocking.

<< <i>1985fan is being inconsistent regarding the terms "Redskins" and "thug". >>

So to you 'thugs' can only be black? Is that what you're saying? I'm sorry you paint the two equal. Me, personally? I couldn't possibly care less about race but what I found appalling was the behavior. Behavior that I, personally, characterize as that of a 'thug'.

I would have called him a thug if he had been any nationality or race.

Really? Thugs have been marginalized? Or are you allowing your own personal feelings about race get mixed up here>?

Yes, it's shocking that you equate thugs and blacks. Shocking I tell you, just shocking.

No, because offensive PI wouldn't have been called like it should have been, and Crabtree would have spit in his face in most likely. >>

When I was a teen in the early 90s, there was no racial barb on the word "thug."

When did "thug" become an anti-black racial slur in the US?

2Pac invented his own definition of the word "thug," though. Maybe that's what did it?

I agree it shows no class but Sherman has had a rep for trash talk long before this. This is just him being who he is.
It's unfortunate that pro sports are gradually devolving into this type of mentality.
Sportsmanship is just a suggestion anymore rather than a requirement. Sad.

Nor was the term Redskin a problem back in the 90's.

1985fan claims he has become "educated" on offensive terms like thug.

Yet he chooses to openly use them to prove to us his racist ways.

    So sad.

The term Redskin originated as a slur towards Native Americans in the country in which the sports team chose the name. The mascot of the team is a Native American. While the "intent" of the name may not be to denigrate Native Americans, the connection was still there and well known.
