The context here is pretty straight forward. Our resident 5 time perma-bammed troll, who never hesitates to play the race card and call fellow board members racists, said Richard Sherman a thug and hoped Peyton "annihilates" him. After being informed a "thug" is a racist code word, he continued to gleefully calling Sherman one and then posted this:
The context in this case is crystal clear.

It was actually refreshing to hear someone speak their mind without all the usual boring PC diatribe. It was interesting. You just made the game-saving play against someone who was talking smack about you, and that play helped send your team to the Super Bowl, then someone sticks a microphone in your face a few minutes later. Would you be able to compose yourself and say something articulate and profound? I probably would have said the same thing Sherman said, along with several F-bombs. It's easy to judge from behind a keyboard.
A picture is worth a thousand words and no amount of back peddling will ever change that.

right and let's not forget these guys. Another prominent/popular group from the era who were such a force to be reckoned with, it was apart of their group's title. I'm not sure if Tupac was the first or THE guy who popularized it. I'm guessing there was some unheralded rapper in the 70's or 80's that used 'thug' prominently at some point. But I do vividly remember that 90's cheese fest video and thinking, oh man, he has "thug" tattooed across his stomach. That won't put a target on his back or anything. Then he played that "Birdie" character in Above The Rim and pretty much cemented that image to a lot of kids back then, fairly or unfairly. If you spent time in an American high school in the 90's, in a non-rural area, I'm sure you knew some folks struggling with an identity who rocked a FUBU black hoodie, a Colorado Rockies hat (the CR stood for crack rock, if you recall) and wore saggy pants and thus referred to themselves as thugs/gangstas/players who weren't in the zip code of any of those things.
So I just think if you're under 40 years old, you're more likely to use 'thug' as a descriptive term simply because if is/was a part of pop culture vernacular. Not that there isn't some racism or racial undertones to some of it. I spent my Jr & high school years in the 90's, but I can't ever remember hanging 'thug' on anyone, athlete, whomever. But I've probably said a certain person/athlete 'thugged it up' at some point to describe a singular act. Todd Bertuzzi's on ice assault of Steve Moore some years ago, perhaps. Something that would need to more way more egregious than what Richie Sherman did which to me isn't any different than Reggie Miller giving the Knicks faithful the choke sign back in the 90s....minus the pro wrestling style postgame interview, I guess.
And before anyone mentions it (again), if you think people buying Sherman jerseys are doing so for support for him and not doing it as a 'look at me!' statement, well, I don't know how you can be so naive.
People buying and wearing Sherman jerseys outside of Seattle aren't showing what a fan of him they are - they're desperately seeking the attention that the whispers and points and stares bring them.

Yup. Butt slap and "Helluva game".
Crabtree's response looks like that of a poor-sport. It also looks like the typical response you'd expect from a guy who just had his season ended 4 seconds earlier by that man. Factor in the negative history that Sherman himself said they had. It'd be naive to automatically assume that Sherman's gesture was friendly.
I'll give Sherman a pass on the post-game sideline rant though. However, he should have kept it there, instead of taking it with him to the post-game press conference and to SI the next day.
It makes no difference to me if SEA wins or not but one thing is for sure. Richard Sherman gained a ton of diverse fans while DEN mostly gained a certain type of person.

Here's what I don't understand. If you don't like the guy, fine. In fact, you have every right in the world to despise him if you so choose. But labeling him a thug? What exactly did I miss here? Is my definition vastly disparate? When I hear that word, I immediately think violent criminal. When I go back and watch that post-game interview, "thug" is the furthest thing from my mind. For crying out loud, the guy didn't even utter a single expletive. Where would we be today if he had? Death row?

Good call, Tim. I've been involved in a great many animated conversations about Sherman on Facebook. Almost nobody seems to know that his Beats commercial was playing before the post-game rant, which means almost nobody that calls him a thug, or says he should be fined, or all the other crap (largely racially motivated) knows diddly squat about him or even the game of football. Not saying that's the case in this thread - I'm sure it's not. But, that seems to be what's going on in most social media.
It felt like I was revisiting my first post to this thread when I stumbled across this. But it gets much, much better. Do yourself a favor and click on her Twitter pic when you're finished reading.

Some despise an individual's success story coming out of Compton and the fact he's faced more adversity in one day than they ever will in a lifetime. They have their reasons, albeit misguided for whatever drives their hate, and that's okay. It's a free country and they can continue to call him a thug, a punk, a jerk, a self-serving ahole, whatever.
I find it sad but to each his own.

It was an honor to watch Barry Sanders play in Detroit. Perhaps the greatest football player in the history of the game, his talent was matched by his class, humility and charity.
I do not recognize many of the players today. Would be nice if the coaches took some time to groom these young men into quality adults.

Last years Super Bowl had an average US TV audience of over 108 million. If that is the same amount again this year, more then 107 million won't care enough about this one interview to let it decide which team they care to align themselves with. The few exceptions will be people like you who have constant menstrual cycle issues and also have some sort of pathological need to whine and argue about every single thing they ever experience in this world

I'm one of those who are now rooting for Seattle and is a new fan of Richard Sherman. >>

<< <i>Wow it didn't take long. A new Beats headphones commercial with Sherman putting them on when the word thug is said. Great marketing on their part. >>
That commercial was actually aired before Sunday's game..

Thanks for clarifying.
I find it sad but to each his own.
The most recent salary information is from 2012 and it shows he makes $465,000. This guy is going to get a big pay raise at some point.
I do not recognize many of the players today. Would be nice if the coaches took some time to groom these young men into quality adults.
<< <i>It was an honor to watch Barry Sanders play in Detroit. Perhaps the greatest football player in the history of the game, his talent was matched by his class, humility and charity.

Last years Super Bowl had an average US TV audience of over 108 million. If that is the same amount again this year, more then 107 million won't care enough about this one interview to let it decide which team they care to align themselves with. The few exceptions will be people like you who have constant menstrual cycle issues and also have some sort of pathological need to whine and argue about every single thing they ever experience in this world
<< <i>Some despise an individual's success story coming out of Compton and the fact he's faced more adversity in one day than they ever will in a lifetime. They have their reasons, albeit misguided for whatever drives their hate, and that's okay. It's a free country and they can continue to call him a thug, a punk, a jerk, a self-serving ahole, whatever.
