I remember this thread...... When I got to 130,000 pieces years ago, I though that was a lot..... Sold them to a friend who picked them up in a Ford escort. You should have seen that chassis sparking as it drove down the street....
It's funny, I probably have around 400 rolls of circulated / UNC wheat cents all told, so 20K pieces, which didn't seem like a lot... until I had to move them all in the dead of winter this past February. About 5K of those are a very well mixed mini-hoard with lots of early dates and mintmarks, some rainy weekend I want to sit my 8 year old boys down with a couple of Whitman albums and see if I can hook them on the hunt.

Incomplete planchets wanted, especially Lincoln Cents & type coins.

The hoarder of those barrels of wheat cents has an awesome opportunity for introducing kids to collecting coins. For example, he could contact the local Cub Scout troops and do a program on coin collecting for them, then bring in some buckets of wheat cents and have them go through them to fill folders. Hoarding all those wheat cents is a disease if they just sit their accumulating, but if he can use them in some small way to promote coin collecting, then his disease is healed.
This is amazing and insane.
My main concern over structural integrity of the cans (I have ice cream buckets of pennies and nickels that give way after 2 years) however the verdigris/rust that can spread thru out all the coins when they are clumped together like this. This is a case of one bad apple can spoil the bunch.
However good for you if this makes you happy, personally myself I would have spent the $20k on coin silver or bullion silver (No verdrigris or rust on bullion.).
That's almost 13 thousand pounds of copper. WOW. @ $2.20 PP that's almost $30,000 for scrap price alone. or double that if you sell them for $.03 a piece. That a lota cents....
Good to see this old thread again..... I wonder what the status of those cents/barrels is now.... The original poster has not been on the forum for over a year.... Would be nice to know if the hoard is still intact. Cheers, RickO
The point is saving them as an investment. with the price of copper going up, most of the copper cents will be out of circulation very soon and I expect the premium for the wheat cents to go up!!!
Keith
Are these the same people who say silver will go to $200 oz?
WHAT THE HECK!!!!!!! WOW!!!!!!! You REALLY have a hoard!
I hope you not in Florida... Something down here ages plastic terribly it turns hard and brittle and next thing bingo it just falls apart.. that would be quite the mess to clean up if those barrels decide to give up the ghost.

Was it ever explained why this person accumalted this large quantity and trying to sell them at some point in time would be very time consuming an not very profitable as well!

Some times it's not why but If I can do it. Looks like he did a good doing it.
Wowsers! Crazy and cool. I'm just going to assume your source already culled the key dates, VDBs etc.
RE the copper value: someone above asked a good question: 59-81 are also the same copper composition and are worth just as much for melt. Why the Wheaties? Or is it just "because"?

Is this a play on copper?
It reminded me of seeing a flag on the back wall of pqcoin in Minneapolis made entirely of Lincolns.

LOL, I fell kinda dumb with my 5 gallon bucket now, though I did collect them mostly on my own
since high school.
Never seen anything like that though!

"Poof" went David Copperfield.
would love an update!!! great story!!!!
The good thing about this investment is you don't have to worry about any theft happening.
No one is going to lift those bins and take them away, so you don't have to hide them.
Might as well keep those bins in your living room!
I'm impressed!!

Likely less a few Canadian small cents ...

Died of copper poisoning.
Perhaps the weight of the cents was finally enough to open up a large sinkhole beneath the garage ?
