inept, underperforming, pathetic, dismal and waaaaaaaaay overpaid.

    Now Dicek...great.

If this keeps up, I'll be watching Gunsmoke reruns.

I read some article on boston.com in which the author called Beckett's performance "adequate." Yes, that was the exact word. If adequate = ERA of 5.40 (what he turned in last night), the standards have already been drastically lowered.

<< <i>What is more concerning to you: Salty starting 0-10 at the plate or pitchers he handled giving up 11 home runs, 26 runs, and 34 hits in 3 games? I'm going with his performance behind the plate as opposed to at the plate. It wouldn't be fair to blame him for all those hits, but I have to wonder if Varitek would have called these games better. >>

Might be too late to pass this on, but we Texas fans knew that Salty isn't exactly the most coachable guy in the world. Game calling isn't going to be his strength. But hey - thanks for that fireballer Mendez. image

I wouldn't call it panicking, I'd call it telling it like it is. The payroll BTW is right at 162m per for 2011. That makes it about a mil per game. So far, I haven't seen $4m worth of talent and the performance is certainly sub par.

Gonna need more like 95+ games to have any post season acitivity IMO. Not a panic, but certainly ample disgust. Beckett for one sure isn't worth $17m...anyone can google the payroll and do the math. These guys simply aren't supposed to be 0-4, maybe 2-2, but not where they are, and, after tonight, could well be 0-5.

I hate stats like this, but I couldn't resist posting it anyway. The Globe reported that the number of teams that have started 0-4 and made it to the World Series is zero.

    Here's another one Von...

Beckett's salary for 2011 is $17m. The average pitcher gets 30 starts per season. Therefore, Beckett picks up a cool $561k++ for each start.

I won't break it down into the equivalent of a 40-hour work week, it's beyond disgusting.

I don't know what you're talking about, Al! That's just about $5,610 per pitch. image

this start won't help NESN's ratings to recover, that's for sure.

Before the season started I got 4-1 odds for the Sox to win the World Series. I just checked with my sportsbook and the odds have changed to 5-1 already.

I'm starting to feel better about the 20-1 odds I got on the Cinncinnatti Reds though.

the hitting will get much better. Lester's pitching will get much better. I can't guarantee anything else.

Nice bet!...Surprised they were that high.

Sox 0-6...I'm not panicking yet, BUT....if the Yanks sweep this weekend (and its entirely possible given the pitching matchups), being down 7.5 games is a LOT to come back from.

I'll be at the game tomorrow. I'm expecting a lot of boos and Bronx cheers, it could get real ugly, real fast if they get 2-0 in the first inning or so.

there should be no love for any Sox players during introductions. Francoma should receive the loudest jeers. Obviously, the basics of baseball weren't practiced enough during Spring training.

I think it'll be 80%-90% cheers during the intros, but the boos will rain down on the first guy to strike out looking or leave the bases loaded, that's for sure.

Based on some of their quotes yesterday, the players are definitely expecting the worst today from the fans.

looks like we are witnessing the return of Suckholz. Last year an aberration?

I'm not ready to call Buchholz' last year an aberration...remember, Lester has struggled out the gate the last 2 years and nobody questioned him, so I'm willing to give Buchholz thru April to prove that he's the same guy he was last year.

No chit. I don't recall his curve ever breaking that much -- of course, that may be because it has been so long (probably since 2007) we have seen him pitch like that.

Feel free to disagree, but I think Varitek needs to keep catching Beckett every 5th day. Screw Salty.

speaking of Varitek. He just proposed to his girlfriend...some not named Heidi Watney.

I agree. If Salty was a .300 20/100 guy like Victor, I'd say not so fast, but Salty is terrible. Does Theo really think he is all of a sudden going to become the next Carlton Fisk? Honestly, if at the AS break, Salty and Varitek are hitting for roughly the same average and OPS, I'd rather see Varitek get the majority of the work in the 2nd half.

Saw that bit of news, apparently he's getting Nick Swisher's sloppy seconds....

would Theo release Matsuzaka despite owing him millions?
  • Options
    TheVonTheVon Posts: 2,725
    Probably not . . . but I would.

The start of this season has really made me question everything I know about baseball. I honestly believed that the pitching would be good this year. Okay, I didn't really think Dice-K would be good, but I didn't think he'd be quite this bad.

<<<would Theo release Matsuzaka despite owing him millions?>>>

That would mean Theo would have to admit to a mistake. This is the same guy who still thinks JD Drew is worth "a tick over $14m" after 4 mediocre seasons in Boston.

Okay, since ESPN is forcing me to watch two Red Sox games in a row, could someone please tell me why the guy sitting behind home plate holds up those two neon green signs every time the Red Sox gets a strikeout?

Those two circle sign things... what the hell are they and what do they mean? Driving me nuts...

    Another dismal Dicek performance...after 7-0 I bailed.

Red Sox have quite a dilema on their hands...spotty to poor pitching and the inability to drive in runs. Far, FAR too many LOBs. The only positive thing I see is Pedroia, at a mere 5'7", he's one helluva player both defensively and offensively.

Unless this gets figured out soon, it could be a very, very long season.

BTW, I almost couldn't endure the ESPN broadcasters this weekend, in particular Hershheiser, is he bad or what?

I watch baseball on ESPN with the volume turned to zero. No problem following the game without listening to boneheads. Same for FOX.

I always try NESN first, even on Sunday nights...just in case image

Remy and Orsillo are tolerable to good most of the time, often entertaining. They have knowledge of the Sox and tend to show it. Heidi Watney is a huge bonus (no sound necessary)

The 2011 salary is right at $162m...so far, very little to show for $11m!!!

I wonder if Drew etal dress in costume when they pick up their paychecks every other Monday? Too bad they can escape this embarrassment by utilizing direct deposit. I care not to run the numbers, it's close to lunch, I don't want to get sick.

Time for Tek to get his head in the right place and have some kinda closed door meeting and fire these guys up...the LOBs are beyond painful.

I'll bet Damon is loving life, big time right now...sitting in the dugout just smiling away.
