what's the possibility that these are not as popular as anticipated? Or did the mint have unlimited numbers to order and will go through to pick out the legitimate ones?

All orders are in backordered status. The first order number here was 37340xxx. It's believed some of the order numbers are phantoms due to various causes including the servers crashing about an hour into the ordering period. My guess is you're right on the cusp. Good luck!
The mint only charges your account when they plan on shipping you items they have in stock. If you ordered a bunch of differnt things that are being shipped on different days, then they will charge as they ship the items on those different days.
The mint will be suspending sales tomorrow in order to allow their hard working IT specialists and customer service representatives an opportunity to watch the Royal wedding on Tivo!
On a serious note, my phantom order from when the website crashed disappeared on its own and my second order is still there. I also received an e-mail confirmation for the second order so all seems good. I agree that there were a lot of phantom order numbers created. Chances are high as well that people ordering other products had to try 2 or 3 times also generating false order numbers.
As mentioned earlier, that is my auction at $455, I believe it will be the first auction listing to close tomorrow afternoon. There are currently 89 watchers on the auction!

I've seen it happen and you can re-create it on their site.
don't use express checkout. login to the mint web site put something into the cart and go to checkout. go through each checkout step, 1 by 1, until you reach step 5. do not click on the "place order button" on the page for step 5. click on the "my account" button at the top. look at your order history. there will be a new order at the top of the list of orders. if you click on that order it will be "suspended." give it some time and that order will simply disappear if you never click "place order."
MsMorrisine is correct in the phantom order number scenario. It is what happened to me during the crash, I got to checkout and wasn't sure if it went through. Then when it came back up I saw my order and thought oh great I got it, then 2 hours later it disappeared. I then went on to recreate this phenomenon by going to the last step without submitting to see exactly what happened and it did it again, thus creating another phantom order number and throwing our numbers off.

I had a crash on step five today, just before the BIG CRASH. I must have generated at least one unused order number.
The way I'm reading this statement from the Mint website, I think people could be put on a wait list, without being notified. Which is to say, they could be sold out and a wait list is currently forming. This is saying, they will take more orders than they have coins and the people who are to late will just have their order cancelled. This, I think, is different than before.
"The United States Mint will institute a "waiting list" for orders beyond the maximum mintage. We may, however, be unable to post notification of a waiting list status in a timely manner so that the customer knows of this status prior to placing the order. A waiting list means that orders have been accepted for the maximum mintage, but if a product becomes available because of an order cancellation, we will fulfill orders from the waiting list on a first-in, first-served basis. The United States Mint will be unable to provide information about a customer’s position on the waiting list.
When an order is placed on a waiting list, you will receive an order receipt, but it is not a guarantee that you will receive your order. If we are unable to fulfill your order, you will receive a cancellation or sold-out notification within one to two weeks. If you paid by check, you will receive a refund."
My opinion, based on the order numbers, is they are sold out and the waitlist is filling up.
I guess it is safe to say that if your order number is 3734xxxx - 37367xxx that your order is pretty much good to go, with those in the 3737xxxx running a high chance to be put on the wait list

Going to call the mint this morning but my guess is they sold out last night. Now it may be alittle harder than I thought to figure exact time so please bear with me for the contest. If I can not determine the exact time I will have a drawing from those that fell between the times of last night thru early this morning. I hope this will be agreeable with all of you. Will try and announce the winner today..............

Isn't it just an assumption that they are sold out?? Because the shipping date moved up a day??
Hard to decide since it is still listed as available and you can still add to your shopping cart.....
I'm sure the pleasant person on the other end of your phone call will say...."Hmmmm......let me check.....let's see.....Yup...still available"
My order is still showing held. My moms that i used my cc for and jacked around with the billing address etc vanished right away because of the billing address being the same I guess. Shipping address of course was different. I will call them today to see if I can iron things out.

A deal is a deal once you confirm. If someone confirms (confirm is the key word here) then does not deliver, they can't be stopped but they only get to do this to us once and that information will be shared with others if an inquiry is made about the person. Regarding prices, c'mon guys!!! We see this over, and over and over again. The first couple weeks of eBay sales means absolutely nothing except that someone is selling something they do not have in hand and someone else is paying entirely too much for it. There is a greed factor in this that turns my stomach and we have foregone much in the way of profits we could gain time and time again by NOT doing the early eBay pre-sales because there is just something sleazy about it in knowing that 99.9% of the time all the buyers are being eternally buried.

You have to be kidding aren't you? It makes you sick to see presales? And yet its ok to send out a mass email offering 50 more bucks to get more of these? I apologize if i am missing something but it seems like you want your loyal customers to sell you PRESALE for an extra 50 bucks. Really I could care less what there selling for on ebay, and who is selling them, or for whatever reason they are selling. I am sure your not in business to lose money so you lowball your customers and than come here talking about ebay sellers being sleazy? If there is a demand people will buy, you can't stop them. Just got done talking to the mint and was informed they still have sets for sale, I asked about the waiting list and of course got the answer we really don't know. So will wait and see if they post on the website today that its sold out. Also I DO believe anyone who made the promise to sell to you guys should abide by there promise............

I then went on to recreate this phenomenon by going to the last step without submitting to see exactly what happened and it did it again, thus creating another phantom order number and throwing our numbers off. >>
And exactly how many hoops to you have to jump through to see it happen. Not a very common occurrence at all. >>
I had a crash on step 5 twice today before I was able to get an order through. I think it was pretty common earlier today.
<< <i>Wasn't the shipping date listed as 5/12 for most of the day? It now lists it as 5/13..... >>
That would mean the infamous waiting list has started, moving forward one day at a time.

Yes, I remember that with the plat anniversary set..

That's what I'm thinking. The Mint says on the page that there will be a waitlist but you might not be immediately notified if you're on that waitlist.

I had a crash on step five today, just before the BIG CRASH. I must have generated at least one unused order number.

I got to the final step 3 times before the the big crash and never once generated a order number.

<< <i>Going to call the mint this morning but my guess is they sold out last night. Now it may be alittle harder than I thought to figure exact time so please bear with me for the contest. I do have about 6 members who guessed from last night into this morning. >>
Just sayin'.....

<< <i>I see one went for $700 on eBay earlier. I wonder if the the people who sold to MCM for $330 are bummed. >>
Can't believe those committed to the MCM deal will honor the deal when they receive their coins, $50 over cost is, ahem, low.
Can't blame MCM for trying, though. I bet an MCM BST thread similar to their puck buy thread shows up eventually offering more than $50 over cost.
Edited for spelling, syntax and meaning what I think >>

Well said. Presales should be banned imho.
