I think because a lot of the posts were from people who did not get them that are now getting them, they have no more to say for a little while. When PCGS grades start rolling in, things will pick up. The numismatic version may not do as well I think, what do you think?
I think the numismatic versions will be another land rush mob scene at the Mint's website. 110% of the mintage will then be presold on fleaBay. TD

Wow.....this is an incredible thread......over 4600 posts in less than a month and a half.....I thought those pictures of the nude coin collectors about half way through was pretty sneakily placed in there....
<< <i>Ya know...it wouldn't be AS bad if the dealers and "special people" got their 50-100 sets IF, and it's a big IF, Joe Normal didn't have to go through so much freakin' grief just to get a set or two.
It's has been a royal PIA with all the maybe's and bounced emails, faxes, jerking around the on sale dates yada, yada, yada.
It's like they're doing us a big freakin' favor "letting" us buy one of "Their" sets...
It just pizzes me off......
Done now........
Side note....I am leaving tomorrow for 2 sunny weeks in St. Maarten.....Do you think I will log in every hour?????? I think not (well, maybe every few). >>
You should be able to get a set down there. The guy that owns the coin shop in St Maarten is friends with the guy that owns the Gold Center. Have a great vacation!!
And now to change the tempo a bit...a question re the pucks and slabbing...
Strictly for preservation purposes....do you think that ALL first year pucks should be slabbed?
I ask because, otherwise, I'm just thinking that there's an awfully large surface area of exposed silver that's going to eventually get darker and darker...like your exposed silverware. And that excess toning probably won't look pretty on such a huge coin.

That happens with every investment. Someone will pay too much. Nature of the beast. No one can ever precict that point because we have a fluid market. That is why adults make these decisions- usually- or at least old people.
Gold and silver are valuable but wisdom is priceless.
I was reading the front page Jan. 4-11 NN article "Public waits for 5 oz coins."
I was struck by two things:
1) The CEO of Dillon Gage sounds like he gets it. That he will sell only 1/HH (i.e., NO Gold Center bulk dealer sales B.S.). He said that they are waiting until they have their packaging and distribution system set up. He also says that they will ship in capsules.
2) The final sentence of the article, on P.20 reads: "A numismatic version of the coins will be available in February." Feb. sounds good to me!! What a day it will be when they go on sale. What's the prediction for sell out time for those??
If Dillon Gage handles it right it could be one helluva freebie on the positive PR...hell if anybody comes out blue collar on this they'll make out like bandits with publicity value. To me anyway.
I'll be trying on mint day personally, but if there's an outfit that does right with these I will investigate future purchases from them.

I will be taking a vacation day from work, have two laptops going and the speakerphone on trying to get a mint set. It should be an event!
I still think the mint should do something to give collectors a shot at these. Preferential treatment to established mint customers who have a record of buying from the mint for a number of years would be nice.

No problem...
I would slab them as I think that this is the safest way to store them. There are, to my knowledge, no SafFlips for them and other flips may be abrasive, reactive, etc.
InterceptShield storage products (I am in no way associated with IS) contain a patented liner which prevents reactive gasses from reaching the coins (see link from another poster). I especially like them for reactive metals like silver and copper.
I think that the safest way to store the pucks therefore is slabbing and then placing the slabs in an IS box.
BE CAREFUL not to put non-archival paper or other substances in the IS box as this defeats the purpose.
PCGS FS slabbing is about $277/set. NGC is about the same.

Oh thank you. So does that 277/set price for slabbing include the grading or is that all together seperate. Man 277, another expensive cost. If it is that plus grading sounds very expensive.

How long before we some of these turning up with "Taco Bell" toning? The size of these might create some interestingly toned specimens.
Does "First Strike" designation need to be requested when submitting? Is there an extra charge for "First Strike" designation? With no cut-off date being recognized by PCGS....is it feasible to assume that all PCGS submitted 5-oz'ers will be designated "First Strike" therefore eliminating the very pedigree sought by the submitters?

Slab and then InterceptShield for exactly the reasons which you cite. >>
Can you please explain this? I will need to preserve a set or two.
Thanks >>

<< <i>And now to change the tempo a bit...a question re the pucks and slabbing...

Not sure of the slabbing prices for PCGS/NGC, and Welcome to the forum!!! >>
Thank you the forum is great. I am still a little confused so do the grading services slab it? And which intercept shield product do you use for the 3 inch rounds?

Oh thank you. So does that 277/set price for slabbing include the grading or is that all together seperate. Man 277, another expensive cost. If it is that plus grading sounds very expensive.

If it allows you to squeeze more profit from the flip...I guess I understand it.
Loves me some shiny!
<< <i>Noticed PCGS making First Strike eligible to ALL ATB coins regardless of date submittted. >>
So would you turn in your set for grading?

Does "First Strike" designation need to be requested when submitting?
Is there an extra charge for "First Strike" designation?
With no cut-off date being recognized by PCGS....is it feasible to assume that all PCGS submitted 5-oz'ers will be designated "First Strike" therefore eliminating the very pedigree sought by the submitters?
<< <i>How long before we some of these turning up with "Taco Bell" toning? The size of these might create some interestingly toned specimens.

If indeed some of these are used as coasters before being sent in for grading, will the concentric rings (Corona, Root Beer, Milk, etc.) on them be considered as AT????????
