<< <i>I see that Eddie DeBartolo Jr. has been chosen to be this year's Contributor Nominee. The only item listed in the Beckett database for him is a card in the 5x8 1988 49ers Smokey the Bear set. Do you guys think that should be considered his rookie, or should we wait for something more mainstream/widely distributed?

I also wanted to share my two newest additions, both from ebay and just back from PSA. I was really happy to acquire the Buchanan, as it seems to be especially tough to find.

    Kyle,

Very nice pickups, especially on the Buchanan! That is a deceptively tough card to find primarily because he died so young; well before the uptick in collecting signed rookie cards. If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for it?

As for the DeBartolo, my vote is that we wait until the Panini card is released next year - as we did with Bill Polian.

    Greg,

I paid $192 for the raw Buchanan. And I'm with you on DeBartolo -- IF he is elected, a HOF card would be the more consistent choice.

    Kyle,

That's an incredible price on the Buchanan....that card slabbed is worth north of $500. Nice!

Gents, what do we think the Steve Hutchinson card is going to be? 2001 UD Vintage? Not a ton of good choices.

Edited to say that I see that the Pacific Crown Royale is the current card of choice. Here's the thing...I've never had a problem with serial numbered cards being in the registry. Die Cut cards? I'm not a huge fan. I know it's by far the most expensive card but it just doesn't work to me. Anyone else have thoughts? I also think a picture in a college jersey (senior bowl) isn't great.

I guess my vote would still be for the Crown Royale. It's not ideal, for the reasons you mentioned, but being far and away his most expensive RC means it definitely will be the choice for the non-autographed HOF RC registry. And I still think we should mirror those choices as much as possible.

My vote Hutchinson's is the Crown Royale. In fact I was just about to send mine off to be signed.
  • VitoCo1972VitoCo1972 Posts: 6,130 ✭✭✭
I get it. Just seems pretty weird to me to protect one "rule" (most expensive) at the expense of overlooking two others (college jersey / die cut)

I wanted to share several new additions that I've gotten over the past month or two. The first addition has been one of my white whales for the past 5 years. I am collecting the signed Heisman rc set and this card is one of 3 that I still needed, with the other two being a 1948 Bowman Bruce Smith and a 1962 Topps Ernie Davis (both nearly impossible to find). A special shout out to Steven (Nevets) for offering this to me. Without any further adieu, 1955 Topps All-American Davey O'Brien signed in vintage ballpoint:
    image

Next, a 1962 Topps Fran Tarkenton rc, which is an upgrade to the one in my set. I bought it in a recent auction. It is the nicest Fran Tarkenton full signature that I've seen. The Tarkenton in my set is available for $175 dlvd if anyone is interested:

    image

Next, a 1962 Post Gene Hickerson for both my 1962 Post set and my signed HOF rc master set which is still a work in progress. I would like to eventually have the set added to the set registry - PM me if you're interested in helping put together the requirements for the set:

    image

Next, a 1962 Post Bob Lilly for both my 1962 Post set and my signed HOF rc master set:
    image

Next, a 1961 Lake to Lake Herb Adderley for my signed HOF rc master set. I'm toying with also collecting the set, but haven't decided yet:

Thanks for looking and have a great day!

Wow, Greg, some great pickups! I think the Adderley is my favorite.
  • Awesome Davey O'Brien , I don't know if a signed 1962 Ernie Davis exists . That signed Tarkenton looks about a PSA 7
  • gregm13gregm13 Posts: 5,798 ✭✭✭
From what I understand, there are a handful of authentic signed 1962 Topps Ernie Davis cards in existence. There was a small window when he could have signed the card. I can't imagine how much that card would cost - well over $2k would be my guess.

A couple 62 Ernie Davis' do exist. Same guy had a few done.
  • Ernie Davis signed on his 1962 Rookie authenticated would have at least a $5,000 card . I've never seen a Vic Hanson 1955 Topps even and he died in the early 80's
  • VitoCo1972VitoCo1972 Posts: 6,130 ✭✭✭
I don't think 5K. Limited number of collectors.
  • I think Ernie Davis would fetch the prices for Brian Piccolo's 1969 Topps signed does . I'd love to have a 1962 Ernie Davis signed .
  • I've been trying to find a 1965 Topps signed Pete Gogolak and a 1965 Topps signed Jack Kemp . I have Gogolak's 1965 signed , but it is horrible looking . Gogolak mangled card .
  • gregm13gregm13 Posts: 5,798 ✭✭✭
    John,

I'll keep an eye out for the 65 Topps Kemp and Gogolak.

Here is a Hanson and another tough one --image

There was a signed Ernie Davis on ebay about 2 years ago. BIN was 2k with a best offer, I made a best offer but someone hit the buy it about 4 hours into the auction...

I'm guessing about 4k based on what I've seen similarly rare cards go for
  • Wow that is awesome . How did you get that and what did you pay for it . The Bobby Dodd is also nice. though I've a Bobby Dodd on Ebay years ago.
  • Thanks greg,

I have been collecting this set for 15 years. This is the only Hanson I have ever seen. Big thanks goes out to Nevets on this board who won a group of these 55s and sold me the ones I needed. Most he sold me were ones of which I had never seen legitimate examples. I really don't want to go into pricing. Awesome that you have a Dodd. I have only seen one other that is legitimate. The three Bobs--Dodd, Grayson, and Reynolds are some of the rarest in that set. I have seen more examples of Davey O'Brien than any of these 3 individually.
  • I have got a start on a third set. Now I have a PSA, PSA/DNA, and JSA set. These are the first I got back from JSA:

I had to search for this thread to find it....been a while since it's been updated...

I received my Marvin Harrison rc back from the Chicago show and was very disappointed. It was a very lazy ass signature that is little more than 2 or 3 letters. Ugh... On a positive note, I've picked up 4 cards for my Exhibit set - Marion Motley, Emil Sitko, Joe Geri and Jules Rykovich...scans below. I'm at 23/59 for the set.

I hope that everyone is doing well and a happy Easter to all. We just finished hiding eggs and am off to bed.

Glad you sold the Millner, kind of sad I didn't get it. I put all my eggs in landing several HOFers from another collection...that fell through too unfortunately.
  • spanky74spanky74 Posts: 240 ✭✭✭
I'm also glad to see you got the proper holder for the Millner from PSA. The '52 smalls I sent in on the blue flip group sub got put in the holder where the card still moves around. Did you specify that holder by chance?
