This appears to be the complete list of 1948-1952 Football Exhibits. Note that there are several that have variations. It appears that there is a significant opportunity for all of these to be signed.
1 Frankie Albert - Stanford 2 Dick Barwegan - Purdue 3 Sammy Baugh - TCU 4 Chuck Bednarik - Pennsylvania 5 Tony Canadeo - Gonzaga 6 Paul Christman - Missouri 7 Bob Cifers - Tennessee 8 Irv Comp - Benedictine 9 Charley Conerly - Mississippi 10 George Connor - Holy Cross, Notre Dame 11 Tex Coulter - Army 12 Glenn Davis - Army, Cal Poly-Pomona 13 Glenn Dobbs - Tulsa 14 John Dottley - Mississippi 15 Bill Dudley - Virginia 16 Tom Fears - UCLA, Santa Clara 17 Joe Geri - Georgia 18 Otto Graham - Northwestern 19 Pat Harder - Wisconsin 20 Elroy Hirsch - Wisconsin, Michigan 21 Dick Hoerner - Iowa 22 Bob Hoernschemeyer - Indiana 23 Leslie Horvath - Ohio State 24 Jack Jacobs - Oklahoma 25 Nate Johnson - Illinois 26 Charlie Justice - North Carolina 27 Bobby Layne - Texas 28 Clyde LeForce - Tulsa 29 Sid Luckman - Columbia 30 John Lujack - Notre Dame 31 John Mastrangelo - Notre Dame 32 Ollie Matson - San Francisco 33 Bill McColl - Stanford 34 Fred Morrison - Ohio State 35 Marion Motley - South Carolina State, Nevada 36 Chuck Ortmann - Michigan 37 Joe Perry - Compton Community College 38 Pete Pihos - Indiana 39 Steve Pritko - Villanova 40 George Ratterman - Notre Dame 41 Jay Rhodemyre - Kentucky 42 Martin Ruby - Texas A and M 43 Julius Rykovich - Illinois, Notre Dame 44 Walt Schlinkman - Texas Tech 45 Emil Sitko - Notre Dame 46 Vitamin Smith - Abilene Christian 47 Norm Standlee - Stanford 48 George Taliaferro - Indiana 49 Y.A. I wanted to highlight several new purchases - 1950 Bowman Mac Speedie, 1950 Bowman Dick Barwegan and a 1957 Topps Jim Patton that I won as a BIN on E-Bay for $25!!! All are strong senior nominee candidates and their rookie cards are difficult to find signed. Speedie died in 1993 at age 73, Barwegan died in 1966 at age 44 and Patton was killed in an automobile accident at the age of 39 in 1972. Below the scans, I have also posted a link to a great article which makes a strong case for the induction of Speedie and Barwegan (it focuses on players who lost time due to service in the WW2 era).

Hey Greg, it appears to me that the Edelman RC of choice should be the 2009 Topps Platinum (based on prices). I'm going to get one signed for the Pats registry set. I'm not thinking he'll get any HOF looks but let me know if you have any objection.

<< <i>Hey Greg- Congrats on the Pihos. I'm surprised too. I thought you had that card a long time ago. I still owe you an email. I'll be responded to yours soon. >>
Thanks Frank! I'm still perplexed why it took me so long to find a signed 48 Bowman Pihos rc. Although his Bowman rc is a SP, I would have expected to have run across more than two in the past 5 or 6 years. The other one that I've seen was in rough shape and I passed on it and have been kicking myself in the behind ever since.
What's funny is that Pihos and Van Buren have been my white whales for the past 3 or 4 years...and I had the "wrong" signed rc for both of them - a 48 Leaf for Pihos and a 48 Bowman for Van Buren!! Now, I finally have the "right" signed rc for Pihos.

<< <i>Very cool on the Pihos, Greg. Any idea what I can eventually expect to pay for a 48 Leon Hart? >>
Thank you! I have only seen one signed 48 Leaf Leon Hart and it's the one that I own. I bought the 48 Leaf Hart and a 48 Leaf walker for somewhere around $400 - but that price isn't indicative of the true value. Hart is a high number in the 48 Leaf set and any signed high numbers are tough as nails to find. I would put a price tag on a signed Hart at ~ $350 to $400. Hope that helps!

Collecting vintage auto'd fb cards and Dan Marino cards!!
Hey guys I've looked this thread over and see how the current registry stands , seems there are still improvements to be made and just wondering what the status is, first. It makes no sense to me why the usfl white,Kelly young are in this registry they have a regular issued full set rc ,which is known as such and was the rc card collectors for nfl deem valid seems only in this registry the xrc cards are Rcs . Also in the case where the vintage hofs have two regular full set Rcs leaf ,bowman. Topps ,fleer both should be in the registry they are recognized by collectors as there Rcs neither is invalid, so to allow one and not the other seems to say that ones the real rc and the other is not , For modern cards I do believe the first card issued by any of the top company's would work these days we can check production times and find out what card was released first. That be the true rookie maybe not the most expensive or shinny. Also somebody mentioned something about a master set with pre rookies, xrcs regional issued Rcs magazine card post hand cut s and so on. We as collectors collect and a master set would allow everybody to do what we do without limitations. And yes the person who could obtain every card in a master set is a rare bird but it would be nice to see .
I went through the entire list of HOFers and have requested the following be added to the set:
Jerome Bettis 1993 SP Tim Brown 1989 Score Charles Haley 1987 Topps Walter Jones 1997 SP Authentic Will Shields 1993 SP Michael Strahan 1993 Ultra Mick Tingelhoff 1964 Philadelphia Ron Wolf 1992 Packers Police
This brings the total possible cards to 271. There are 24 HOFers who aren't included in the set because they didn't have a card available to sign while they were still alive. Right now, I have listed Bill Polian as impossible but will add him to the set once a card is available - which should be over the summer.
Of the eight new additions, I still need Michael Strahan and Jerome Bettis....need to get on those soon. I did have a pleasant surprise this morning when I realized that I had a 1990 Action Packed Junior Seau!
Hope everyone is well...

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts on the set. As for your comments on which cards were chosen for the set - our starting point was the non-autographed NFL Hall of fame rookie card set. The criteria for inclusion in that set, the card had to be either (1) the first card issue of the player in a widely distributed set, or (2) if more than one set was issued for a player's rookie year, then the most expensive card would be used. Take for instance the 1948 Leaf/Bowman cards - the Leaf is generally more expensive except for the short prints in the Bowman set (e.g. Pete Pihos). Another example are the 1961 Topps/Fleer sets - the cards from the Fleer set are generally more expensive.
As for newer sets (post-2000), we have struggled with which cards to include. Our general rule of thumb is to include the most expensive non-autographed card which is generally Topps Chrome.
I would be very supportive of a master set....I personally love collecting odd-ball/regional cards signed by players. The problem there is coming up with a set checklist.....as you would have to build it from scratch. It would be relatively easy through 1989, but would explode henceforth.
Let me know if you decide to move forward w/ the set. I would be glad to help.
Thanks,
Greg M.

I wanted to share a new pickup with everyone. It's a signed 1954 Quaker Sports oddities Bronko Nagurski. I bought it off E-Bay from one of my favorite sellers. I've never seen this card or issue before - so I was excited to add it to my collection. I love signed oddball cards.... Funny story, when I was in high school, I was friends with Bronko Nagurski's grandson. At the time, I wasn't into football and had no idea what a legend his grandfather was....
Now all I need to find is a signed 1935 National Chicle Bronko Nagurski - anyone have one of those lying around??? lol...

I have to say that I'm warming up to your suggestion more and more. Would anyone else be interested in a HOF signed rc master set? Also, if we decide to move forward with it, I would appreciate anyone's assistance in creating the list of cards to be included in the set.
Let me ask you this - take Bob Lilly for example, should we include both is 1962 Post and 1963 Topps card or just his 1962 Post? Same with Gene Hickerson, since he was in the 1962 Post set but his rookie card is 1966 Philadelphia.

Collecting vintage auto'd fb cards and Dan Marino cards!!
I'm more than willing to help build the master list for the master set registry . The easiest way to come up with the criteria is any thing that is considered a rc ,xrc, so any card made the players rookie year or before. In the bob Lilly case yes 62 post and 63 topps as well, also any other card within those years or even further back , like exhibits or khans and so on . Nothing after the players rc year.

Thank you! Of course I'm watching the other 48 Bowman cards the seller has up. There is only one that I need - but I may buy a couple of others as upgrades. The signatures are really nice - I would estimate the seller's father obtained them TTM back during the 70's/80's. Are you going to chase any of them/

<< <i>Guys, I started working on Super Bowl MVPs and was curious if we had any idea what the Malcolm Smith card is/should be. >>
I would personally vote for the Topps card, but the other options include Playoff Prestige, Panini Hot Rookies and Scoreboard. Thoughts?

I went through the entire list of HOFers and have requested the following be added to the set:
Jerome Bettis 1993 SP
Tim Brown 1989 Score
Charles Haley 1987 Topps
Walter Jones 1997 SP Authentic
Will Shields 1993 SP
Michael Strahan 1993 Ultra
Mick Tingelhoff 1964 Philadelphia
Ron Wolf 1992 Packers Police
This brings the total possible cards to 271. There are 24 HOFers who aren't included in the set because they didn't have a card available to sign while they were still alive. Right now, I have listed Bill Polian as impossible but will add him to the set once a card is available - which should be over the summer.
Of the eight new additions, I still need Michael Strahan and Jerome Bettis....need to get on those soon. I did have a pleasant surprise this morning when I realized that I had a 1990 Action Packed Junior Seau!
Hope everyone is well...

Greg M.

Yes - I think that would be a reasonable choice. Is he doing a signing any time soon?

I just posted my first digital album - of my signed NFL HOF rc set. At some point, I need to rescan the front and back of all the cards in my set for the album. But for now, the album is available for viewing....

<< <i>Hey guys I've looked this thread over and see how the current registry stands , seems there are still improvements to be made and just wondering what the status is, first. >>
Thanks,
Greg M.

<< <i>I'm more than willing to help build the master list for the master set registry . >>
