Almost a month w/o anyone updating this thread? Well, here I am to save the day with another new addition to my HoF collection.
An odd thing with some 54s that I just noticed... the left and right colored borders are not always parallel, giving the illusion that the card is tilted or cut weird. The centering on this guy isn't the best, but I'm happy with it.
My father-in-law doesn't follow baseball, and usually fades out when I start prattling on about it. However, having grown up in Michigan in the 50s and 60s, there was one player he knew all about: Al Kaline.
Nice Kaline. The color is also much better than most. may of the red background cards are faded. Post war...nobody is better known or liked than al kaline.
Collecting PSA... FB,BK,HK,and BB HOF RC sets 1948-76 Topps FB Sets FB & BB HOF Player sets 1948-1993 NY Yankee Team Sets
Finally, a new addition to my HoF rookie card set.
1947 Bond Bread Jackie Robinson (SGC 84)
I had been looking for one of these for a while, and a nice looking raw one showed up on Ebay. Knowing that this particular set was the target of counterfeiting in the past, I decided to take a gamble. The seller had a lot of pretty old stuff, good feedback, and a satisfaction guarantee. I won the card and on the same day I received it in the mail, I sent it off to SGC. PSA doesn't grade this issue for some reason. Anyways, I got my results back quickly, a NEAR MINT 84! I'm usually happy with EX/NM for stuff earlier than 1960, so a 40s era NM is pretty awesome.
Anyways, it predates the Leaf and Bowman cards typically used as his rookie card, and was many times cheaper.
Obviously I can't add it to my PSA set registry, but I don't really care.
(Not sure how to post the actual picture on here.)
Does anyone know why the borders are different? I'm not really all that familiar with the BB set. They seem to have multiple border types. Just curious.
By the way, great purchase!!!
Collecting HOF RC's in hockey, baseball, football and basketball. A fool's errand some have said.
<< <i>Does anyone know why the borders are different? I'm not really all that familiar with the BB set. They seem to have multiple border types. Just curious. >>
I'm not a member of VCP, so I can't see what the card is you're referencing, but check out this other thread about these cards. Forum member FKW and I go into pretty good detail about the Bond Bread cards from 1947.
Beautiful Clemente. Definitely one to be proud of!
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
Nice Clemente! I think once i complete my Clemente Basic set ( down to 1 card), i am going to start acquiring some Post War HOFers again. This thread has really stalled out.
I had my eye on that Banks 6, but you beat me to it. And got it for a good price too! You're right about the t-b centering. That card is almost always oc t-b, but yours is nice. Great pickup!

This was the same seller I got the Clemente from. Both times, it didn't take long for the seller (BJ McAvoy Sports Cards) and I to agree on a price that was mutually satisfactory.
I just got an e-mail from PSA to vote on whether or not to add Luis Gonzalez to the future HOF RCs set. Are you kidding me???

LOL!
Topps Traded, Stadium Club, or Bowman?
What about Ultra Update? 1991 Ultra Update had generally been considered the "key" issue for rookies from 1991. Mussina, I-Rod, and Bagwell are on the Future HoF set, and their cards are 1991 Ultra Update.
How about none of the above because Luis Gonzalez is hardly a Hall-of-Famer!

I would love for the voters to explain to me how Bagwell got 41% of the vote while Juan Gonzalez got just 5%. One less vote and Juan Gone would have been removed from the ballot going forward! It's fairly obvious to most that both players were juicers, and at worst they were equals at the plate, so why the huge discrepancy???
Bagwell 2,150 Games .297 449 HR 1,529 RBI 1 MVP Gonzalez 1,689 Games .295 434 HR 1,404 RBI 2 MVP
Makes zero sense to me.

There's zero evidence linking Bagwell to steroids. No one witnessed him taking them, no trainers have stepped forward claiming to have helped him, he's never been linked to a physical sample of HGH or steroids, and he never (to the public's knowledge) failed a drug test.
Gonzalez (and his trainer) got "linked" to a bag containing steroids found in an airport in 2001. While Gonzalez was not punished, the league sent a memo to all teams effectively banishing his trainer from MLB locker rooms. That, plus Jose Canseco claims to have personally injected his @$$ (literally).
The most awesome card in the 1993 Upper Deck set... Could be called "Jose and the Disciples."
Check out what the billboard says in the background.
The only evidence people need for Bagwell's usage are their EYES. Geez.

That's a great looking Kiner. Congrats. I'm sure it didn't hurt that two nice Kiner 8's were listed at the same time. Don't see that very often. I'm down to four '48 Leafs (Doby, Kell, Robinson and - gulp - Paige) left.

Why Vince? It looks awesome just the way it is! You can add a PSA Snider rookie to my scan list now if you have an extra one.

Sick cards! That Ralph Kiner is probably the nicest I have ever seen. The Duke Snider is fantastic. Congrats to you both. Its time like this, when I really wish I had my Post War HOFers set still.
Matt -- I don't know if it's any consolation, but your HOFer RC set "lives-on" in mine and I'm sure in other collectors' active sets that benefitted from your liquidation. For example, my Fox, Morgan, Fisk and Sutter RCs were all yours and you indirectly are responsible for my Gwynn, Ripken, Sandberg and Bunnings RCs since I paid for them from the proceeds of my '59 Musial sale to you! (By the way, gorgeous Bird-Dr. J.-Magic card you recently picked-up.)
About a 10 year lurker here. Just thought i'd like to share on this thread. I have finished the Aaron basic set with this card and I am going to start the HOF rookie set and HOF set. My sets are registered under bc!cards! and I have now completed the 55 Bowman set, Schmidt, Carlton, and Aaron basic sets. I love these boards and look forward to contributing to this thread as i get new cards.
I managed to swing that card by selling off about 150 of my 1967 Topps Commons. I decided to quit that set because I was tired of paying big money for common cards. I started the hall of fame set because I feel like the set provides more of a history of the game type moment as each card comes in and I feel like the money is better spent. Thanks again and I look forward to posting and sharing as I get new cards.

Nope, you got it.
1950, 1953, 1970 remain the only years (1948 through 1995) w/o the rookie card of a HoFer or a HoF contender.
1950's key RCs are Don Newcombe, Al Rosen, and Roy Sievers
1953's key RC is Johnny Podres
1970's key RC is Thurman Munson
