<< <i>I wish there was an easy way out for the 52 Mathews! Yikes! >>
Sooooo, speaking of the super tough '52 Mathews...this one has been on my radar for a while, and I finally decided to pull the trigger. Despite the fact that it's only a 1, I paid through the nose for it, but I love the centering and image clarity. This leaves me just 9 cards short of completing the Post-War HOF Rookies set, as well as one card short (Mantle) of finishing the '49 - present run:
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
No, the back is very clean, no paper loss. There is another less obvious crease which probably brings the grade down. It could maybe be a 2 or 2.5 on a good day, but I'm fine with it as is. Got to knock down one more 500 HR player too with this card, which was cool.

Andy r u gonna do all 500 hr members or just post war? That eddie is one toughie just to see period. I can't ever remember seeing one ever around these parts. But then again hardly anybody ever has vintage.

Just Ted Williams on up. So I'm just missing the Mantle.

VC eligible this year. I'd like to think he has a shot, but probably not...... I recently started the Future HOF players set and I was pretty surprised at some of the names in the composite and some of the people who are not in the composite.

It's not perfect. I think someone should put together a "Hall of Very Good" list to downgrade some of the "future" guys who don't have much of a future, like Hodges and Kaat.
I was just looking over the list of candidates for the next couple of years, and it got me to thinking about Jack Morris. Does anyone else think that he may sneak in in 2012? The lack of decent eligible starting pitchers that year, and the looming abundance of players rumored or linked to PED's makes me think that he has a good shot a making it.
2011: Jeff Bagwell, Rafael Palmeiro, John Olerud, Kevin Brown, Larry Walker, Juan Gonzalez, Tino Martinez, B.J. Surhoff, Marquis Grissom, John Franco, Bret Boone, Al Leiter, Benito Santiago, Carlos Baerga, Raul Mondesi, Bobby Higginson, Wilson Alvarez, Rey Sanchez, Charles Johnson, Jose Offerman, Ugueth Urbina, Ismael Valdez, Dan Wilson, Paul Quantrill, Cal Eldred, Kirk Rueter, Steve Reed
2012: Edgardo Alfonzo, Pedro Astacio, David Bell, Jeromy Burnitz, Vinny Castilla, Scott Erickson, Carl Everett, Jeff Fassero, Alex S. Gonzalez, Danny Graves, Rick Helling, Dustin Hermanson, Jose Hernandez, Brian Jordan, Matt Lawton, Javy Lopez, Bill Mueller, Terry Mulholland, Jeff Nelson, Phil Nevin, Brad Radke, Joe Randa, Tim Salmon, Ruben Sierra, Jose Vizcaino, Bernie Williams, Eric Young

I was looking at a few pre-war cards to add to my collection, and was puzzled by the fact that Beckett identifies a few cards as rookie cards (as does the PSA set registry), even thugh the player has earlier cards.
Example, NY Giant HoFer Bill Terry's rookie card, according to Beckett, is either of his two 1933 Goudey cards. However, he as a US Carmel card from 1932, and a few "strip" cards from the late 20s.
<< <i>It's not perfect. I think someone should put together a "Hall of Very Good" list to downgrade some of the "future" guys who don't have much of a future, like Hodges and Kaat. >>
Since I submitted the Future HOF Rookies set to PSA, I feel compelled to explain the inclusion of Hodges and Kaat, and it's simple. They were second and third behind Santo in the 2007 Veteran's Committee vote, which was the last vote conducted before I submitted the set. Santo got 57 votes, Kaat got 52, and Hodges got 50. For the record, I'd be absolutely appalled if Kaat ever got in the HOF, but I didn't just go with my opinion. I looked at the voting. I think some others should check out the voting results too.
The set was also submitted before guys like Tejada, Ortiz, McGwire, etc. were confirmed as juicers, so they may have been left off the list if the set was submitted later. Rose, Murphy and Parker also have no business being in the set. Murphy and Parker barely get enough annual votes to stay alive, and Rose is light years away from induction EVEN if he was reinstated today. I don't see the VC ever voting him in.
I agree with the poster about Ted Simmons. I think he is quite deserving of the HOF, but he's not in the Future set simply because he got zero support from the voters. He'd get my vote though. As for 2011 voting, Blyleven and Alomar are absolute locks, and they will likely be the only inductees. Bagwell has an outside shot, but he, Palmeiro and Juan Gone are clouded by PED suspicions/confirmations, while Walker is not likely to get in to the HOF, and definitely not first ballot. Morris made a nice jump last year, but he won't go from 52% to 75% in one year. That just doesn't happen. Morris, Larkin and Lee Smith are all good candidates for 2012 when there are no first-ballot candidates.

My fav player after n ryan quite was larry Walker. To me he's a no brainer HOFer...but many feel he isn't worthy. I always liked simmons. He is no bench...but his numbers are really close to fisk. He had more hits, rbi's and higher BA that both bench and fisk but less HR's. similar fielder to fisk.
Many believe hodges would get in along with santo. Next year will only be the 2 mentioned IMO.

Simmons is my prime example of a guy who got completely and totally disrespected by the voters. His being a one and done is an utter, absolute disgrace.
Though I associate mostly with football memorabilia, I've got to comment where a comment is due.
Thank you for sharing those cards here. I am most impressed with the Eddie Murray Rookie Card. The cleanliness, registration, and print quality all appear to approach pristine. It is most pleasing to view! Congratulations on the new additions.
My latest pickup, which leaves me 7 short of completing the set...

<< <i>Nice Spahn. I remember seeing a perfectly centered 7 on Ebay a month or so back with a BIN, is this one it? >>
Thanks. It did sell on eBay last month, but it was a regular auction. No BIN.

I'm no longer building this set, but I did keep 20 or so of my Post War HOF rookies. I just added this one to the mix. Its funny, I like these PSA 6 cards more than I do most of the higher grade cards I have of other players. Not perfect centering top to bottom, but side to side is very nice. I am pleased to add this to my collection.

With cards like the 55 Clemente and the 54 Banks, where something is breaking the extablished "borders" of the card, do you take those into account when calculating centering, or ignore them completely?
Banks' rear is sticking out of the right border on his rookie. The Pirates logo is sticking out of the top and right borders on the Clemente.
I don't take those things into account. Centering on the Banks though is almost always off t-b. It's almost like it's accepted. Strange.

That's a great-looking 6. Could easily mistake it for a 7.

I was looking at the list of active hit leaders, and 8 of the 10 are guys folks usually consider to be future HoFers due to their power, their defense, etc.
The other two are:
Garret Anderson (38 years old, 2505 hits) Johnny Damon (36 years old, 2429 hits)
Think there's any chance that these guys will hang on and get to 3000 hits?
There is zero chance either player will get to 3,000 hits. Big Smooth was as consistent as they come for a while, but unfortunately he went downhill too early.
