<< <i>Right now Im eating my words Ryan, do you know why? Because Im absolutely enraged looking at that Small Baugh card and comparing it to SEVERAL of my cards that got shot down on the .5 bump up attempt. Im not kidding either- no offense as the picture itself is stunning with bold color and contrast but the corners and centering are worse than a few of my cards that got denied because of a "Minor" soft corner or "Not centered well enough"

Edit- Its funny because I bet that card wouldnt cross to an SGC holder.

Again please dont take offense- Im just really annoyed that my Graham and Gifford card ( That you have seen ) didnt get the love that that card got.

Plus I know you well enough that I can vent like this image >>

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I totally understand...your Graham is bump worthy for sure! I don't remember the Gifford though. I bet if you submitted raw you would get it.

The corners on my Baugh appear worse on the scan for some reason.....but I agree with the centering. Here it is with a black background..they look a little better...to the eye they look sharper.

No doubt PSA inconsistancy at its finest! SGC has a $6 crossover special this month..if you are interested image

Perkdog did a little convincing..his recommendation pushed me over the edge. I have now officially started to build the 51 Bowman set.

Thanks to Justcollect and their 5 star shipping rates!

(of course it would have been wiser to complete my 48 set before starting another...but oh well!)

Anybody have any graded 51's in 6-8 range they want to trade?

    1949 BUBBLE GUM card Wars......Bowman vs Leaf December 17 2008, 8:01 PM

Warren Bowman would sue anyone (or anything) at the drop of a dime. Early in 1949 the Bowman
Gum Co. took the Leaf Gum Co. to court over the use of words "BASEBALL BUBBLE GUM" on Leaf's
    wrapper.
Bowman had copyrighted this saying on their 1948 wrapper. The litigation then expanded over the
contractual rights to portray BB players in their sets. The rights to portray Joe DiMaggio, Satchel
Paige, and other major stars were part of this dispute.

Bowman won the BB card "war" and Leaf was forced to discontinue portraying BB players. Bowman's
concession to Leaf was that Leaf could issue their FB set and Bowman would not issue a FB set in
    1949.

    That's the story, guys.

    TED Z

Perkdog's last post reminded me that I had been wondering about the Rams' helmets on the 1950 Bowman cards. The horns appear to be white in the front and yellow on the sides. Does anyone know if they were really like this? Did the horns transition from white to yellow? Helmets, Helmets, Helmets shows the horns as all yellow, and The Helmet Project doesn't go that far back.

Mike I saw this online- a 1950 Rams Helmet. So according to this I say the cards did not depict the helmet accurately.

    They had color back then????

I thought the entire world was in black and white image

Seriously, back when I was a History teacher, I can't tell you how many times I heard comments like that from students.

    1937
Players such as rookie sensation Johnny Drake, Ted Rosequist, and Charles (Ookie) Miller looked great in this unique red & black uniform which was only used for the 1937 season. By 1938, the team would convert the color scheme to the more recognizable and familiar blue & yellow-gold.

Note the red chest number, and the red 'yoke' that ran continuously from the neckline - all the way down the length of the sleeves. This is a familiar look to hockey fans, less so to football fans. For a few other football examples, see the 1930's Giants, the 1960 Cowboys and the 1967 Steelers.

    1940
The 1940 Rams, shown here in a beautiful blue jersey with yellow yoke, fared slightly better than their '37 counterpart - going 4-6-1. As mentioned earlier, in 1938, the franchise converted the uniform's colors from red & black to blue & yellow-gold. The jersey's 'yoke' no longer runs the length of the sleeves - rather stopping at the shoulders, and the pants are now white - featuring a slender, dark blue stripe down the leg.

    1945
This uniform, as worn by the likes of Bob Waterfield, Clyde 'Big' Johnson, and Mike Scarry, features a yellow-gold collar, blue shoulder yoke and white pants - complete with blue & gold stripes. As for the patch on the left sleeve of the jersey? Look closely and you'll see an eagle with outstretched wings amidst a giant 'C' for "Cleveland". The bottom of the 'C' consists of red & white stripes in honor of 'Old Glory'. This patch, we believe, was in honor of America's successful war effort.

    1948
The '48 uniform showcased here features some interesting changes from the 1945 uniform shown earlier. The blue shoulder yoke, which had graced Rams' jerseys in previous years, has been dropped. But most importantly, look at the helmet and you'll see the introduction of the infamous 'Rams' horns' logo - which has been a Rams' uniform staple right to the present day! Amazingly, the original design was done by Rams' halfback Fred Gehrke - who studied art in college at Utah. It's for this helmet that we chose to show this 1948 uniform - the painting of a team logo on the helmet began something that has added immeasurably to the game of football and fans enjoyment of the game - thanks Fred!

    1951
The 1951 uniform, as worn by such champions as Van Brocklin, Elroy (Crazylegs) Hirsch and Paul Barry features two major differences from its 1948 counterpart: the helmet is now plastic in construction, rather than leather - and the jersey now showcases sleeve stripes.

    1957
The '57 home uniform shown here features slender, yellow-gold sleeve numbers - high up on the arm. Look carefully and you'll notice that the chest numbers have a thin, white trim surrounding the gold - something the sleeve numbers lack - interesting and very unusual for this period of time.

It was Joe, I went to bed last night thinking my $275 bid was going to be OK. Glad I woke up this morning and thought $285 would be better- $285 was the hammer. A little more than I wanted to spend but this is a top 5 all-time favorite cards for me.

Oh, man, is that helmet cool! Interesting that the edges of the horns aren't smooth. That sort of mimics the horns on the team logo from those days. (Image from sportsecyclopedia.com.)

Agreed! I have been slow to pick up any newer items myself, I been putting semi lowball bids on some cards and rightfully so I have been outbid every time.

That '59 Taylor Rookie is a shame it has the wrong pic on it, for that reason alone I will never add it to my collection, but then again Im not putting together a set that requires it either-
