Occasionally I keep an eye on this thread since there are some great cards to be seen, but with me being mostly a baseball card guy I, unfortunately, never have anything to add.
<< <i>I see Ryan has graduated from PSA 7 to PSA 8! Nice looking Army Davis!
Here are a few more that again I was able to get for short money..
<< <i>
-------------------------------------------------------------------- Damn Paul you are cruising along with the 52 Large set. What a thing of beauty that set will be!
I only buy 8's when I can get them for a reasonable price. I never even bothered looking at 8's before...but with the cashback offer..it has made it so much more affordable. Most of the recent ones I have picked up were for about $150...not bad for 8's in alost 60 year old sets.
I've been trying to find some of the football cards from the 1926 Spalding set, and this one was up for sale - George "Wildcat" Wilson, who led a team out of Los Angeles for the American Football League created by CC Pyle and Red Grange in 1926. When that first AFL folded Wilson played three years for the Providence Steam Roller team and led them to their only NFL Championship in 1928.
How did our beloved "Vintage Football" fall to page three?
Are we all tapped out on funds and not buying any new cards?
How about I send us back to the top with my latest pick up for my 57 set.
I liberated this beauty from its plastic prison for my raw set. Its obviously PSA missed the grade on this card. After close inspection there is no doubt the card is at least a 7, maybe better. Eitherway Im proud to now have it as part of my 57 Raw set!
Great pickup Perk! you can pick up many programs dirt cheap. Share some pics of more of the inside when you get it...
Rev-You have so many great pieces..I would love to see your collection. I have seen alot of it on the net54 board as well....keep posting! I almost bought that Wilson Spalding Champions card off ebay.....I was gunshy..when i went back to look at it, it was gone...and now I see where. Glad it found a good home in your collection!
I was finally able to complete the Chicle R 311 set - the two I had the most trouble finding were the first and last ones listed - Joe Bach and Ace Gutowsky (The Greatest Tackle).
These photos were available when you handed in 20 wrappers from the 1935 National Chicle Football Stars set.
live.com cashback as helped me get some great cards recently:
Maybe because I was a center in high school, I have an affection for these cards..you gotta love em. The Bulldog Turner card is no doubt one of my all-time favorites.
Love that 30% cashback!.....I am almost glad that they lowered it the last few days...it helps me resist the temptation!
one for the set....I will be using the SGC crossover special for this one...
I have been looking for this Les Horvath for a long time now. I needed it for the set, but also wanted it for personal reasons. Last year, I inducted Les Horvath into my high schools Athletic Hall of Fame. Too bad he is deceased and it was in memoriam. Another inductee, Bob Brugge also played on the same Ohio State team as Horvath...both winning the national championship. Pretty cool, two guys who grew up a street away from each other end up going to Ohio State together. Both went on to play pro ball. Horvath with the Rams, Brugge got drafted by the bears of the NFL and Browns of the AAFC.
I will not declare that this one is for the set..because I havn't officialy decided to take that leap ...yet!
Rev..you are corrrect! Tittle was drafted first round in AAFC By Browns...but "given" to Colts, Drafted in NFL by Lions, and when AAFC merged with NFL, he was drafted #1 by 49ers....(this info comes from the book "The Million Dollar Backfield")
which leads me to today's mailday....
(I have a PSA 6 of 55 Tittle now available for sale or trade)
Got another Baugh Beauty in the mail today....(thank you MS live Cashback!)
which will be crossed to SGC to go along with Bronko...
Nice stuff Ryan, crazy question though.. Those Dixie Lids, does one side look all mesed up from where it touched the ice cream? ( I assume ice cream lids ) I have never seen one in hand.
<< <i>Nice stuff Ryan, crazy question though.. Those Dixie Lids, does one side look all mesed up from where it touched the ice cream? ( I assume ice cream lids ) I have never seen one in hand. >>
------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks Paul... No the backs are clean. From a guy who has eaten his share of ice cream...it wouldn't be messy unless the ice cream melted. If frozen when pulling lid off...not a problem. I knew those years of going to Dairy Queen would pay off fo me!
Here is what the backs looks like:
There are small lids and lids slightly bigger. These are the small lids.
I made a nice find at the antique mall on Friday. Among the usual overpriced Packers, Braves, Brewers, yearbooks and programs usually found here in Wis., I found the 1959 PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL ANNUAL by Grosset and Dunlap.
It's 120 pages with really thick board covers, almost like a hardbound book. All the interior pages are black and white. For each team there is a pre-season roster and four pages of player pix, three per page. The pix look like something from each team's PR department. A few of them I recognize from Topps cards of the era, but most are new to me. The Jim Brown pix looks to me like an outtake from the photo session that resulted in his 1958 rookie card.
The binding is intact, but kind of fragile, so I don't want to bend the pages to do many scans, but I had to share a few.
I didn't really NEED this for my own collection, but thought I might as well pick it up for $15. I love the old names and faces from the 1950s-60s football cards. There's a couple of pages of coach's photos/bios (Vince Lombardi's "rookie" year in GB) and predictions, 1958 stats, TV skeds, etc. Hey, did you know the Chicago Cardinals played a couple of games in Minnesota in 1959?
Thanks for the back scans of the lids- very neat! Also great that they are not stained with 70 year old ice cream! LOL
Bob, that book is awesome- I am going to start picking up more stuff like that to expand my collection a little bit more than just cards. You just cant beat that artwork on that cover! If you scroll back a few I recently purchased a decent game program from the early 1950's.
That Lew Carpenter photo sure looks a lot like his 59 Topps football card. It's not quite the same image, though: his right hand and the football are in slightly different positions.
Got this magazine in the mail today. Its the 1943 Pro Football illustrated. I have a few other of these from later 40's..they are really cool. This is from the WWII era....real interesting read.
<< <i>That Lew Carpenter photo sure looks a lot like his 59 Topps football card. It's not quite the same image, though: his right hand and the football are in slightly different positions.
Right now Im eating my words Ryan, do you know why? Because Im absolutely enraged looking at that Small Baugh card and comparing it to SEVERAL of my cards that got shot down on the .5 bump up attempt. Im not kidding either- no offense as the picture itself is stunning with bold color and contrast but the corners and centering are worse than a few of my cards that got denied because of a "Minor" soft corner or "Not centered well enough"
Edit- Its funny because I bet that card wouldnt cross to an SGC holder.
Again please dont take offense- Im just really annoyed that my Graham and Gifford card ( That you have seen ) didnt get the love that that card got.
Plus I know you well enough that I can vent like this
