Still working on my HOF RC, 1948 Leaf (Basic and Master) and picking up auto'd '48 Leaf and HOF RC's. In the meantime, I've decided to take the plunge into the 1955 Topps All American Set. Starting from scratch, but set the bar at a level I think I can complete. I'm going to build it in PSA 6 or better and the cards MUST be VERY well centered. If anyone has some extras lying around, I'll gladly consider buying them and help you offset some of the Holiday spending.
Here are 4 of the first 6 I've picked up to start my set:
I had to upgrade from the old shoeboxes I was using to these great cases...I highly recommend them! Picked up 2 from Matt. Luckily, I can't fill them totally yet...leaves a little growing room for the collection!
My wife is awesome! I have "dreamed" of having brown leather furniture in my "football" room. My wife made it happen this Christmas! She rocks!
<< <i>Nice work Ryan, so I take it you have completed the Jim Brown player set? >>
--------------------------------------------------------- not sure about that...I have his 1957-66 regular cards..mixed SGC and PSA...I would like to eventually upgade the 2 6's to 7's. Are there any other cards in his player set?
<< <i>it has been a while since I added to this thread.
Got this in today for my LSU rookie collection. Too bad they used the wrong Jim Taylor on both his 1959 and 1960 Topps cards
>>
It's a cool card. Larry Fritsch use to sell 59 Topps 2nd series lots (of 40 cards) for $100. From vending. And the big rookies included were Bobby Mitchell and Jim Taylor. I think the highest I got was a 7 (bought a few sets). Wonder if anyone ever got any really high grades.
<< <i>These '55 Bowmans are starting to grow on me a little...You cant beat this one for $15...... >>
Nice pickup Paul. If I ever did a vintage football set, 1955 Bowman is the only one that really appeals to me. I have about 30 mid grade cards with a few hall of famers, but if I really went after it I would try for it in all PSA 7.

Nick, always a pleasure to see you stopping buy, maybe sometime soon you will decide to build that set and then you can be a regular here.
Groza's helmet on that '53 looks really funny for some reason.
Nice cards. I love that Brown run!! I have often thought his run would be fun to put together. Seems like he might have an in action card you need ? John
Way to swoop down and grab that Walker right from my hands Perk! I had that on my radar...but got home late from a booster meeting and missed it. Enjoy it you rat fink
P.S. Great Walker!
Oh and I am not building the 53 set...I actually decided not to build the 51 set either.....

55 Bowman, good enough for Nick, good enough for me. And I AM collecting this set, slowly but surely, just looking for the cheap, low hanging fruit psa 8's that I can snatch up. One of the coolest designs for a card I thinks
After thumbing through one of my Gridiron Greats magazines I came across an article in this guy, it was such a great read it prompted me to go out and grab the card that was pictured in the article. This guy stormed the beaches at Iwo Jima...

I may have posted this here before, but two prize autographs I have are for Jack Lummus, NY Giants, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his valor after his fatal wounds on Iwo Jima and Al Blozis, NY Giant, killed in action in France. Here is a link to a comic book about Blozis True Comics

I have hunted this one for a long time now....for some reason it has been very tough to find well centered with good coloring. The SMR is only $22...I had to pay over double that to pick this up. I hated to pay that much..but I havn't seen one this nice come around in a while.
Here's another new addition.....I think Robustelli was the original Karate Kid! Nice crane!
An upgrade:
I have a SGC 7 available for trade or sale
Finally, picked this up dirt cheap..under 10 bucks!
<< <i>Nice cards Ryan! What card did you get for under $10?
Congrats on the Bednarik, very nice card glad you found one your happy with! >>
--------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks Paul...I have found this Bednarik to be very difficult to find well centered..its usually very off centered...also the color registration is nice on this compared to others. The only thing I hate about the card though is the centering of the oval....unfortunately it is like that on all the 58 Bednarik's. For some reason topps made the card with the oval off centered!
I picked up the 1941, 1947, 1948, and 1949 Pro football Illustrated magazines. They are great! Here is an ad that I thought was cool. This is from the 1947 magazine..after the first year of the AAFC. After reading the 47-49 magazines, I was surprised just how much of a "war" was going on between the NFL and AAFC. Several articles in them discuss the battle between the two leagues.
<< <i>Nice job Ryan, I almost bid on that Baugh, glad I didnt. congrats. >>

me too
I actually was eyeing the PSA 7 that you are bidding on now...but realized it was you, and then I found this one. Good luck on the 7, it is a real nice one!

I seem to recall hearing Brown requested this backdrop to show off his brand new car (caddy?).

That's a cool ad for the AAFC BigDaddy.
I like that they're bragging about being 48.5 % successful on field goal attempts.
Great looking 5 gosteelers!
"How about a little fire Scarecrow ?"
Wow! Awesome 7! Finding cards like that is what it's all about ...
