<< <i>BigDaddy- I hear your pain. But to answer your question, many people submit cards asking for No qualifiers. That's how you get an 8OC card into a straight 6 slab. It seems PSA will deduct to grades for a card that should be qualified >>
I understand that..and that is my point exactly. SGC grades the card..corners, surface, gloss, etc pretty consistently IMO, a 7 is a 7 no matter what the centering is. Look at the card...if the centering is appealing to you..add it to your collection. If not pass.
Don't tell me the same card is a 7 OC and a 5 ..that is ridiculous IMO. So the Connor I posted above could have been a PSA 7 OC....thats ridiculous.

Regarding that Connor card you posted no way that would get a 7 OC due to the soft corner and print defects IMO. Like Frank said PSA does allow submitters to request NO QUALIFIERS but they knock a card down 2 grades with them so many people prefer the grade to be a straight grade, that is why you will see cards like that Graham given straight grades. Believe me Ryan you know Im not bashing SGC as I like their holders and respect them as a big time grading company. I am not saying PSA is without faults- You and I both checked out a large collection of '52's that were poorly centered and low end for the grade so maybe Im out of line throwing the "OC" thing at you about SGC but can we both agree that regarding RESALE value the card is better off in a PSA slab?
Ive see crap psa 8 cards, and Ive seen crap SGC 88 cards.
I prefer the look of the SGC slab, but I prefer the PSA registry (and chat boards for that matter)
Neither grading company is without their faults, and both definately have their strengths
blah blah blah. Ryan summed it up well, buy the cards you like, in the quality you like, in the holder you like. We ALL love football cards, thats whats important here ladies!
<< <i> You and I both checked out a large collection of '52's that were poorly centered and low end for the grade so maybe Im out of line throwing the "OC" thing at you about SGC but can we both agree that regarding RESALE value the card is better off in a PSA slab? >>
----------------------------------------------------------------- If I bought to RESELL, then I would only buy PSA...but I buy to COLLECT... which to me is a huge difference. If Card A in a SGC slab is identical in every way to CARD B in a PSA slab...but Card A is cheaper..then I am buying card A every time. I will let my kids worry about resale value, when I am 6 feet under. With that said, when I have upgraded cards, and sold off SGC cards, I have never lost money on them...which is what matters most to me. Maybe I could have gotten a few more dollars in PSA...it doesn't bother me.
I do agree with Paul that in most cases PSA out sells SGC because of demand. There are more PSA only guys (I will refrain from using the term drones this time) in the market which is going to cause more competition. The set registry has caused collectors to go crazy with some prices. With that said, I also believe that if a SGC card is sold the right way and the seller is patient, you will fetch similar if not more than PSA. I have had to pay high dollar for many SGC cards because of a bidding war, which ended up being more than what I could have picked up the card in PSA. What I find is that the potential deal is out there more with SGC because of lesser demand..which is fine by me.
P.S. Joe do not insult Perk and I by calling us "girls." We both have earned the respect to be called "Ladies!"
Nice Hutson..its really a shame that there are not more football issues of him...and that greats like Hutson have only 1 mainsteam card. I know he has some wheaties cards..but thats all I know of.
<< <i>Nice Hutson..its really a shame that there are not more football issues of him...and that greats like Hutson have only 1 mainsteam card. I know he has some wheaties cards..but thats all I know of. >>
Another big shame is Marion Motley only has 3 cards! Could you imagine him on a 52 Large Ryan? He would fit that card just right!

That's what I am afraid of. I started looking through the SMR last night at the '63 set. Looks like it can be built fairly easily at a decent price in mid grade PSA 6 - PSA 7. Oh no... I think it's started.
Got this in the mail today, which brings me to about 90% of the way through the 57 topps set. If anyone has these cards below in psa 8 to help a brother out, it twould be much appreciated. Basically all the high numbered cards, I've heard they're the easy ones.
92 stautner 104 Morrall 116 Moegle 118 Hart 127 Modzelewski 136 Ulrich 144 Macafee 150 david 152 Younger 153 Svoboda 154 Morrison and the Bazooka checklist (psa 5 or so would do)
Oh yea really easy! Didnt that Ulrich card fetch over a grand recently? You know there is a sore loser out there waiting to pounce on that one when it pops up again.

The little wink thing at the end of my request Perk, it means sarcasm!! Wink wink, tongue in cheek, just kidding. etc........ Look it up man, you should try it sometime!
Anybody have any theories WHY Motley was skipped in the 1952 Bowman set?
With the help of the regulars, or even occasional visitors, on this thread, I'm proposing we do a group effort and create a '52B Motley card.
We get one person to provide a suitable picture, another to do the back write-up and a third to provide the secondary graphic elements. I'll do the compiling and printing. Each of the three other principal contributors will get 1/4 of the initial production (I print on 8-card sheets, so that's 2 apiece). Others will be able to get a copy for a modest charge.
I'm not the greatest custom-card creator working out here, but I do have some standards. So, here's what I'd be looking for . . .
Picture: Since '52 Bowmans were art cards, we need a non-photgraphic color picture of Motley. (My card-making skills don't allow me to convert a photo to artwork.) A quick search on eBay showed a couple of possibilities, like a Hall of Fame card, etc. Nothing too stylized, as the Bowman originals were pretty like-life. I'll need to get either the loan of the actual card or a 300 dpi scan. I'd prefer not to simply pick up the art from his 1951 card, but that may have to be a fallback position.
Back write-up: About 120 words. We can go one of two ways, either a faux-1952 version, covering just his career through 1951, or a version summarizing his entire career. A minor detail . . . we need the city/state of his residence, which was probably on the back of his 1951 or 1953 card.
Secondary graphics: I need a "background" for the front. This can get tricky, since it has to be one from which I can remove the existing player and replace him (with some Photoshop diddling) with Motley's picture. Best sources of these would be other 1950-52 Bowman football cards. That blue sky and clouds background on the Eddie Price card above would be one possibility. For this I think we should post the possibles on the thread and let everybody give an opinion. The "winner" here will be person who can provide either the loan of the card in question, or a 300 dpi scan. This person will also need to provide a scan of the Browns logo from a 1951-52 Bowman.
I'll have to set myself up as the final arbiter for selections and "winners," but this is designed to be a "community builder," so everybody's participation is welcome.
For the Motley picture and the background possibilities, please post what you can provide on this thread. For the back write-up, please PM your work to me.
Let's all have a good time with this and come up with a nice product and tribute to this all-time great.
<< <i>Wow, it's impossible to keep up with Perkdog! You're adding cards at an unbelievable pace, man...how close are you to finishing your set? >>
Thanks man! Unfortunately Im only about 41%, I recently went a bit crazy after the three set breaks became available, I had to though in order to scoop up some seriously tough cards. I planned on taking a break and waiting until after the first of the year before buying any more cards but these last few cards ( Heath & Standlee ) I put really lowbids on and ended up winning them but other than that I plan on reloading the funds before I make anymore headway into the set.
This set is a huge task, I wont be done with it for a very long time.
Here's another cool one from the book..since I was scanning Motley, thought I would put a pic of 2 of my all-time favs to collect Bulldog Turner and Sid Luckman
These are upgrades so I have an SGC 7 Groza, SGC 6 Baugh and PSA 6 Hirsch available for sale or trade if anyone is interested.
I have been kicking around the idea of building this set in SGC as well as the 48 set that I have been working on ....gotta stop the urge...gotta stop the urge...
Nice stuff Ryan! I think it would be awesome to put together the 51 set, I think that is a gorgeous set that gets overlooked, the artwork is just as nice as the the 50 and 52 set, I think it actually has even more detail than the 52 set to be honest, centering as usual is tough as well as gum & wax stains on the backs. Go for it! It is relatively inexpensive too.
