I've lurked, with envy, for far too long. Here are a few highlights from my collection. Over the past eight months I've turned my attention to HOFers and certain other memorable players from 1935 to 1963. I have complete football sets from 1964 to 1989 raw and to keep my collection under control I shifted to graded HOFers instead of sets from before 1964.
I got my undergrad from WSU, amazing such a small set (National Chicle) would contain two Cougs. I included a Husky, but all hail to The King - story is that Hugh took a pay cut by going pro. I've met Keith Lincoln several times and he's very cool.
I always chuckle when ebay sellers include Jewish when selling cards of Luckman, Mix...Never see players identified as Catholic, Baptist. Anyone who bedded Jane Russell is a stud, I bet Waterfield crossed his heart often.
Taliaferro is such an amazing story, the Jackie Robinson of pro football for breaking the color barrier at quarterback. Any Motley or Graham card in a collection is awesome.
Perhaps the very worst picture every for Bednarik, conversely, what a great picture of Van Brocklin. I occasionally by OC cards for a bargain if they present well and I think the Ford presents very well.
I'll post some more at a later date. Tony

Does anyone know the scoop on the 1957 Sherman #58 variations? The master set registry list 2 variations, Willard (error) and Williard (correct). There are also cards with the Rams team not printed on front. I just bought a PSA 8 identified on the label as "Cor. Rams team on front". However......the name on the back of the card is Willard Sherman. So....I'm confused. It seems my card is mislabeled (probably). Also, I believe there are probably at least 3 variations of this card.
Ryan - Those '48s are great. Just lost out on a Luckman on ebay. Will try again. Though B&W, to me the image quality is much better than the '48 and '49 Leafs.

The Trippi is just a classic pose. Anything vintage with a Rams helmet is cool. The Summerall presents very well for OC and got it for a bargain. Moore is a proud man!
I can't look at Donovan without laughing. His interviews on NFL Films are classic - in his card he looks like he's wearing a 10-gallon cup. The images of Hirsch reaching for the ball are some of the all time classics - if you didn't know who he was you still might guess his name is Crazy Legs.
Impossible to not display these two together. Thanks to Big Daddy Bowman for the Berry. The Unitas is a 4, but no creases and displays very well. I've lived my whole life in the Pacific Northwest, but if I had to do it over again I'd pick growing up in Baltimore in the 50's and 60's.

This is more in the area of memorabilia rather than cards, but a few years back the item below came up for auction on eBay - it sold for $400. I contacted the buyer and did a little research to determine that it was a charm given to the Frankford Athletic Association committees that were involved in running the Frankford Yellow Jackets football club. When the Yellow Jackets won the 1926 NFL Championship the players were given very nice Illinois watches, but apparently committee members were given this charm. Not long after it was resold on Mastronet for $1,400 - I always regretted not digging a little deeper when it was on eBay.
Generally I collect only paper items, but I do have this charm which was made of anthracite coal and given to the members of the Pottsville Maroons in 1928 - a year when they had three future HOF players but posted the worst record in the short history of the franschise.
I love vintage gems like that. I always am tempted to buy things like that when I see them, but I am always concerned with authenticity..so I pass on them. Coo Stuff!
I also like to collect the older programs - no questions of authenticity there, at least - here's my latest find - it's from the Giants first win at home.
What a great piece of history with the breadline game. Might we see that next football season? I sure hope not, but it showed how American society came together during a crisis. My dad grew up in the depression (just turned 85) and thinks we're all a bunch on whiners! He says we have no idea what hard times really mean.

The game I heard about my whole life growing up was at the Polo Grounds on December 7, 1941 - my parents were in the stands and remembered how there were announcements throughout the game recalling military personnell to their units - but no one knew there had been an attack at Pearl Harbor until they left the game.
Looking at programs that relate to dark days in American history - this game between the Giants and the Cardinals was played two days after the assassination of President Kennedy - many people thought it should have been canceled. The New York Times later reported: With the N.F.L. schedule of games less than 48 hours away, Commissioner Pete Rozelle had to make a decision on whether to play those games. With the approval of the Kennedy family, he chose to go ahead with the full schedule. Rozelle often acknowledged that to be his biggest mistake during what was an illustrious career in building the N.F.L.'s popularity.
One last cover - the NFL did not forget the mistake it made the weekend after the Kennedy assassination, so the Giants game scheduled for September 16, 2001 was canceled - as were all NFL games, I believe
Growing up I really liked the Redskins and remember the battle between Kilmer and Jurgensen. Sam Huff = Tuff! Can't go wrong with the Golden Boy. Schmidt - one of many prematurely balding HOF linebackers
"Keep on matriculating the ball down the field", I love the fact that Maynard played in the 1958 championship game for the Giants. Great Unitas - is he wired up or what? Dandy Don and MNF are two great memories of my youth.

That '51 Layne is one of my favorites. Looks like they made him do a baseball throw. If he tried to throw a heavy old football like that he wouldn't have lasted as long as he did. Or maybe he's waiving at the bartender for another round?

Taylor's true rookie card IMO. Best PSA 5 in my collection, I keep looking from a micro wrinkle on Johnny, but I can't find one. Sir Francis scrambling in the snows of Minnesota - 70s football at its best. Otto pre 00.
Best Brown I own and just beautiful - stud football and lacrosse player. Nitschke, need I say more! Read North Dallas Forty and see if you can figure out which character is Lilly - he must have been cold all the time.

I have been working on getting some Giants cards up on their Wiki website
I'm looking for a scan of the Benny Friedman Star Candy card to add - or if anyone knows of other early cards, I'd like to include them. I do not have either of those Spalding cards - Koppisch or Friedman - but I did pick up that Koppisch strip card for just a few dollars on eBay recently.
Got this in the mail today..used the mslive rebate..saved 50 bucks. I know these are curse words around here, but I love the SGC holders...cards just "pop" in them! This one might be going back to SGC..looks like a 7!
Nice card Ryan, I dont think the SGC holders are taboo by any stretch, in fact I like their look better than the PSA holders, but I am a firm believer that they hold more value with PSA and I like the set registry as well.
As far as that card goes the centering is near perfect! The left bottom edge looks like it has a small indent in it? The white boarders are a little dark as well, maybe thats why its not a 7- either way a very nice card. Congrats on your new pick up!

Thanks Paul. I love the card. Actually that is fine with me. If the PSA drones are willing to pay a premium for a card because it is in a PSA holder..than let them. So, if this same exact card is in a PSA holder, it sells for more...than great for me. I will keep buying SGC and let the drones pay that premium for PSA. The same card in different holders is the same card to me! I would rather pay less. The registry has inflated prices for PSA cards...and I believe that many of those PSA prices are indeed just that..inflated. Over time, not sure if the inflated prices will hold..we shall see. I just chuckle at guys who won't buy a card that isn't in a certain holder...seems so foolish to me....buy the card..not the holder. As you know, I buy too many of both PSA and SGC...and I enjoy both. For those who won't touch an SGC....makes it all the better for me!
The Van Brocklin card is magnificant for a 6...PSA or SGC. No indentation by the way...I have a mag. lens that I use.
Ryan no doubt about it buying the card not the holder. Myself ( weve talked about this before ) and many others would agree that the grading standards between both companies are acceptable for many high end collections however the problem with SGC is as always the centering allowed by them- many times cards labled SGC 7 or 8 are poorly centered, I know pretty much all of your SGC cards are very nice for the grade so it isnt much of an issue with you. Dont get me wrong no grading company is spot on every time but as long as the eye appeal is good enough for the buyer then it is all good!
Judging the two cards you posted I think the SGC is a much better looking card!
Here are some scans of what Im talking about, dont get me wrong PSA makes some bad calls themselves but this Art Donovan card might be one of the worst I have seen!
my opinion on the centering issue is that PSA gives an OC qualifier..yet is inconsitant with it. SGC does not give qualifiers..they let the buyer decide centering based on eye appeal...which I prefer.
Why didn't this get an OC qualifier??
I don't need an "OC" on the flip to tell me that its an ugly card. I made the mistake of buying it sight unseen..the last time I will ever do that.
An OC qualifier is a death sentence to most cards...how many times have you seen a OC qualified card that still has great eye appeal...I have seen alot. Paul, you have hunted for 52 Large high and low...how many PSA's have you come across that have terrible centering and not receive the OC qualifer? Its too hit and miss for my liking.
<< <i>Here are some scans of what Im talking about, dont get me wrong PSA makes some bad calls themselves but this Art Donovan card might be one of the worst I have seen!
>>
But Paul...your missing the point....I agree those SGC's are off centered..but SGC does not give an OC qualifier. They have perfectly centered 8's and very off center 8's, but if you look at the surface gloss, the corners, they are always consistant in my opinion. With Psa, you can get a PSA 6 and PSA 6 OC and tehy look the same! thats a problem to me.
BigDaddy- I hear your pain. But to answer your question, many people submit cards asking for No qualifiers. That's how you get an 8OC card into a straight 6 slab. It seems PSA will deduct to grades for a card that should be qualified

Anyone know more about this? Thanks!
These two, one of which is a tough high number, display beautifully for their grades I think:
Another high number and the last card in the set:
Half the set down and half to go... with a couple more upgrades to do as I would like to complete the set in PSA 3 NQ some day.
