I loved the idea, but I kind of feared this may happen. I think it would be much easier to trade and flip, then spend funds to flip again and so on. But, I really liked the idea of just trading. I must say you got further than I thought you would. Remember, quitting while you are ahead is not the same as quitting.
I'll be brutally honest. You need to think outside of the box not only vertically, but horizontally also. Do not just trade sports items and sports/non-sports cards. Think of trading for other items. After all, that's how the "Red Paper Clip" concept worked.
If you trade horizontally, you will succeed by the end of the year.
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
A 1951 Spahn has a very narrow audience. If when you were considering trades, you had a choice between what you thought was a $350 Spahn card or a $325 Yankee card, the better trade would be for the $325 Yankee card because it would be easier to find somebody who wants it. If you stick to HOF rookie cards or big name Yankees or Dodgers then it will be easier to find people who want to trade.
Ah, don't mind my little rant the other night. I missed my nap and got cranky.
Obviously, there's really no need ever to call it quits on this... unless I get hit by a bus or eventually die of old age. The Spahn is still sitting here on my desk. If I find a deal tomorrow, great. If it takes another several months or a year or more, that's Kool and the Gang. I've got patience.
And thanks, all, for the encouragement despite my whining.
To answer MBMiller's question about the Spahn's market price, here's the VCP info... The $475 BIN last August was for the very card I have.
4/5/09 Memory Lane $502.90 4/1/09 eBay $350.62 3/26/09 Mile High $458.25 9/21/08 eBay $306.00 8/31/08 eBay $426.01 8/19/08 eBay BIN $475.00 2/14/08 Mile High $465.30 10/1/07 eBay $307.00 5/24/07 eBay $335.85 12/3/06 eBay $447.77 11/16/05 Memory Lane $656.00
Yeah Dude, no need to throw in the towel. If it's really buggin' ya though, you can always go back & slightly revamp your initial rules. For example, you said you were always going to trade up. But what if when you get to a sticking point you decide to sell what ever it is you have and turnaround and put 100% of that $ into a new piece? If you feel trapped with an item that is hard to trade, you'll always be able to find a buyer. Then purchase something you think will be more attractive trade bait to continue to climb the ladder. Just a thought...
BTW, yeah it does bug me to see copy cats. This is a great thread the first time around, when others try to jump on the bandwagon it makes them look like they're trying to steal you idea/thunder. Just my humble opinion...

Ah, don't sweat it. I think Dr. J's a good guy and pretty harmless. If he wants to entertain himself this way, I've got no problem with it.
Please don't take this personally, but can somebody out there just give the guy a '52 Mantle instead of making him go through this trouble for one? Would make life so much easier for everyone involved. Thanks.

But it won't be the same. Besides, who here is rich enough and generous enough to give away a card that's worth a minimum of $2500? And that's for ones that look like a truck ran over it.
love the pursuit. wish i came across this earlier as the landis letter wouldve been cool to trade for. being an avid fan of the early 50s bowman cards, you should be able to find a trader for the spahn. i just wish it were centered better - if it were, i'd take a shot at it just to participate! best of luck!

Almost had a deal in place for the Spahn tonight, but... hah, the less I say, the better, I suppose. Suffice it so say the other guy, a longtime board member no less, said I should send my card before he sent his card because he's a lawyer and is therefore unlikely (more unlikely than me, I assume... I mean, who else is involved?) to run off with the card. Being of somewhat thin skin, especially lately, I told him that we should just skip it if he had any doubts at all about my holding up my end of the bargain.
So, considering that and a somewhat surprising amount of negativity that's been thrown at the project since the word go, I think it's a good time to call it. It was a fun for a while, but it ain't anymore. A gazillion thanks to all who supported the project, bumped the thread on an all-too-frequent basis, and, especially, to those whose trades I shrewdly and/or stupidly accepted and/or turned down,. And congrats and eff-ewe to all who persistently **tched and moaned that there was a better and/or faster way to do it. You can take up the project yourself, now... just like you always could have.... and show everyone just how it's supposed to be done.
Yeah, the whole derailed trade tonight may be a bit of an excuse, but, really, it's just another example of how un-fun and irritating this has become.
The Spahn willl be up for auction soon... with half the proceeds going to charity and the other half going to my daughter's college fund.... as was to be the case with the Mantle. I'll be sure to post a link.
Hmmm. As John Lee Hooker once said, I feel a lil' bettuh.
P.S. Don't be sorry this happened to me, dont DYBII, and don't quit the hobby because of it. It's all good.
That's a damn shame, Bryon. It was a very entertaining ride, and I can understand your feelings to a point. Like many others, I wish you'd let it ride. You didn't start with a paper clip, and you ain't goin' after no stinkin' house. I'm hoping you'll decide to stay the course, but if not, thanks for providing a pretty darn entertaining thread.

looking for Topps 71-72 hi's-62-53-54-55-59, I have these sets started
Posting your true feelings at 2:17 AM is like calling your EX from a club at 3 in the morning and telling her you want to get back together. No good can come from it. I'm hoping that Bryon's post was slightly alcohol induced, and will be rethought with a clearer head and a cup of coffee this morning.
Shame on the board member/lawyer who questioned Bryon's integrity. You should wish to have half as much as he does.
John Lee Hooker also said, "Boom boom boom." My favorite quote from him is, "Whiskey and wimmen almost wrecked my life."
I would hate to see this train stop rollin' - sorry wrong singer. Just don't stop believin' - man I have to stop.
