  • I have been buying these uncirculated First Spouses from the beginning. I have them all and I can sell every one today for a nice profit! I submit them to PCGS myself and have most of the MS70 First strikes. I think with most of these unc`s having pre 3500 mintages, that if gold corrects they will still hold a good premium above melt. so anyone looking to get into gold today, The first spouses are safer than bullion at today`s spot gold prices. providing you purchase at original us mint prices. just my thoughts.

So the MOH Unc climbed 899 from last week's report. Quite a bit, but less than the buying frenzy I expected. HalfStrike, do you have numbers for the proofs?

Coinmaster1229, once completed, that's going to be an *awesome* set of coins. I'd take that set on the road to shows just to show them off and get some more interest in them!

<< <i>I wish the plat coins would be doing much better, but at the time those were the lowest mintages and seemed like sure bets. The uglies have now matched those coins but with the much more popular metal gold and with many more key date coins. With the plats its one or two, with the uglies it will be a long stretch of key coins in gold. >>

The uglie's will never match the appeal of the 3 year changing reverse Plat's for theme or popularity. The beautiful Liberty design matched with the changing reverse, a cool, low mintage, 3 year run. Very affordable, very rare.

There is no such thing as a "run" of key date coins. There is one key date coin. There are tons of semi-keys. In the ever decreasing mintages of the uglies (haag's) you'll never know which will be the key until the series is complete.

Save for the popular closed set of Liberty designs. It doesnt matter if they are the lowest mintages. They are cool. The haag's dont have the cool factor.

My opinion.....take your money and run out of any non Liberty spouse at multiples of melt. Run fast.

Whats the hurry when gold is going to $2000? Panic selling is never a good idea. I just don't see these coins continuing with lower and lower mintages to the end. At some point the numbers could pick up and that will make todays issues look really good. If not then the Hillary will probably have sales of 100.

Looks like the time to sell Julia is now. May regret it later, but I agree that it's likely that she will be de-throned. I think that it is also likely that she will remain the best looking of the bunch.

I think that she may have peaked last year. Should have sold then..

It's hard to know what a Julis PCGS MS70FS should sell for. There are a few NGC 70s on FeeBay w/high asking prices but no sales. No PCGS 70s at all. Has anyone seen any PCGS MS70 Julia's sell recently? I've not been following them.

I think she should go for around 3k in MS70FS although not sure if that is current. You may have to go upper 2k though depending on current sentiment.

That's the key question is when, if ever, will the First Spouse coins see mintages climb. I though the spouses after Mary Todd Lincoln through Ida McKinley would have the least amount of interest and it would pick up starting with Teddy's wife. But who knows what will happen. Maybe we won't see much interest until Jackie O.

I thought that I remembered the last Julia PCGS MS70FS going for the mid threes. Does anyone remember? High 2's seems a little low for a PCGS MS70FS.

I don't think any coin that was on sale for a year and barely sold around 3000 coins can be called popular. That includes those plats and also the uglies. I have never said the uglies are popular, they don't have to be to move up in price. Luke warm would move the prices which is happening now. The plats are ice cold though based on what i see on Ebay. I still hold out hope like you do, but when the gold uglies almost matched the mintages it took the steam of the plats it seems.

<< <i>Whats the hurry when gold is going to $2000? >>

The hurry is that your premium in coins like Julia that now sell at multiples of melt will not move much at all or lose the premiums - being dethroned by another issue.

Take your money and reinvest it in bullion, if you want to play the bullion market.

I purchased a JT MS70 FS before the mint pulled them. I purchased it off ebay for BIN of $1,275. I sold it a few months later for $3,600. I think my auction link is somewhere in this massive thread. There is a comment on how much I got out of a 2008 Jackson PCGS MS70 FS......That one made me some bucks.

Flippers may hate this thought, but it occurred to me that other than the Liberty subset of hags, and maybe(?) the lowest mintage coin, the rest may be collected(accumulated?) generically and that there may not be a lot of value beyond bullion. In other words, nobody may really care beyond the few with direct or vested interest.

IMO, the ATB pucks may do the same and that these coins have relegated many series to postal stamp-like "who cares" status...
Think of how many of the low mintage so-called classic commems really fall into this category...

BTW love Eric Jordan's book but don't recall in his list of I think 200 rarest US coin issues that the classic commem coins may have been left out? Can anybody check on this?

7Jaguars, Yes, The classic commem coins are included in Eric's list. Anyone want to hazard a guess on when the plats will catch fire? Or maybe heat up a little bit? Is this a function of the economy or something else?

  • Spot platinum is well above $1800.

I would guess that if we get a spot price above $1900 then a number of PR/MS69 platinum W issues will be at risk of being scraped out.

Remember for some $1900 cash in hand is better than $2,000+ on Ebay/paypal net fees/hassle/risk etc.

In time I expect for many issues of modern gold/platinum/silver PR/MS70 will be the norm, with lower grades being gradually lost through time.

I bought two, one was flawless but the other had a small scratch on the back and I sent it back for replacement (I wonder who is going to get that one). It was received over 2 weeks ago but it still haven't been replace or has my CC has not been credited for the return (according to the Mint, they credit the CC when the return is received and then recharge it for the same price when they ship the replacement).

I think the sales will drop back to it's normal level of about 500 coins/month.

The question is: when will the sales end?? The end of 2011??

You know, looking back at my order history, I had so many of them on order and then cancelled, it just makes me sick! Oh well, no since crying over spilled milk.

I did see I received two 2008 1/2 oz PR plats in December 2008. They must be still sealed my stack of mint boxes. I wish they were the MS coins but I guess they are still worth a little more than what I paid for them.

PCGS has turned too many coin collectors into coin BOX collectors if you ask me. Just my soap box moment.

Hey, I just looked at my account at the Mint and my replacement 2011W AGE went from back ordered to "In stock and reserved.'

First, they finally issued the credit, now it looks like I should get the coin soon!
