It didn't feel like a "good game" until the 9th, but we'll take it, right? I hope that the walk-off win wakes them up. Tomorrow's match-up should favor the Sox, but you never know. Also, the Yanks/Orioles matchup will be a good one. Bedard has been excellent this season and Hughes seems to be a popular fella over there on the Yankee thread.
Ted, I hope you're thinking long and hard for something that rhymes with Matsuzaka . . . all I can come up with is "caca."
as the Sox celebrated wildly after the win, I said to my wife (who was half asleep, but cared more than the dog): "The Yankees don't need this." She gave me the "huh" look, so I explained that this might be the event (similar to the Varitek-in-your-face-Arod move) that gives the Sox the previously-lacking and highly necessary impetus and confidence in their ability to win games and sets them up for success the rest of the year.

just this once, let's break the RSN mold and get our hopes up!
LOL. I liked your effort a whole lot more than I've liked the Sox' effort so far today. Looks like they're off to another stellar underperformance. 5-0 after 3 1/2 innings against the D-Rays? Come one team. Let's prevent some freakin' runs from scoring and put up a few of our own!

looks like I was wrong, hopes should be down, way down.
Too little too late. I was hoping another magical ninth inning performance was in order again but that is living way to dangerously and we got beat. Its a shame because New York got beat again as well, situations like this really count down the stretch ( which is now ) Well, bad taste in my mouth once again...
I hate to keep ranting about the same things when it comes to the Sox, but I can't help but express my bitter frustration with Big Papi.
I know he’s hurting. I know that he’s “not right.” I also know that statistically he’s still having a good year. HOWEVER, I also know that he is not clutch, he’s not an offensive leader this year, and he’s not helping the team win. I’m tired of all these walks he is taking. Yeah, yeah, walks are great because it’s not an out and that improves your chance of scoring . . . I know. But in cases like today, with the tying run on 2nd and our “best hitter” at the plate, we need to see a swing. I don’t care if he doesn’t hit a home run, but in situations like today in the 9th inning, a single would have tied the game. It was nearly the same situation last week in Anaheim, only that time Brandon Moss was on deck. Seriously Papi? You’re going to give up the chance to win the game and put the burden on a guy playing in his first major league series? Mr. Clutch. I think not.
My Poem
Wily Mo can suck my toe, Big Papi looks fat and sloppy.
Man-Ram and Drew don't care and Youk has lost his flare.
Schilling's bloody socks are clean and Gagme is anything but mean.
Lester and Lowell beat cancer, but when it comes to winning games, the Sox have no answer.
At least the Yankees lost today. Too bad that's about all we can say.
These are the games we need to win, the Devil Rays in Fenway. -can't beat the worst team in the league, at home, with the 50 million dollar man on the mound getting outpitched by Joe Shmoe? 2-42 record this season when losing after 8 innings, again, that's TWO AND FORTY-TWO, the only thing big about Papi anymore is his waistline, Wily Mo is less, J.D. Drew buckle my shoe, 4 aces look more like a flush (down the toilet).

how does that 2-42 mark compare to other teams? I really can't bash them for that if it is good or better than average.
All points here are valid unfortunately. The 2-42 thing sounds awful but like Barn said who knows how it compares with the rest of the league, BUT a mark of a great team that will go far in the postseason FINDS ways to win those ball games! I just dont see the fire in this team to really take advantage of oppurtunities CONSISTENTLY
<< <i>how does that 2-42 mark compare to other teams? I really can't bash them for that if it is good or better than average. >>
I don't have the answer to that question, but what that stat does tell us is that 44 times the Red Sox went into the 8th inning losing and they've got 48 losses on the season. I hate to belabor the obvious, but I think this stat shows that the Sox need to focus on scoring some FREAKIN' RUNS early in the game for a change.

I couldn't agree more with you. Today was a game we shouldn't have lost, and it would have put more distance between us and the other guys.
And it does seem that Ortiz is drawing a ton of walks this season - sometimes, I am yelling at the screen "swing the bat!" as he watches pitches go by. Of course, better a walk than a strikeout, but Ortiz isn't in the DH spot for his on-base percentage.

the walks that DO receives would not be a problem if Manny was being Manny.
Ortiz is playing hurt and isnt getting the big hit. Same with my boy Travis Hafner in Cleveland, they are both one bad twinge away from missing the rest of the season. (say it aint so!) and Manny is getting older by the minute; just doesnt have it this season. The Sox are going to have to win with good pitching and solid defense. Heck Mike Lowell leads the club in RBI's!
It'd be nice to see the Jays & Angels get into a slug fest tonight and the Halo's blow out their bullpen - especially with the D-header tomorrw in Fenway.
Michael, I like the way you're thinking. That would indeed be a great thing to see happen. I'd especially like to see Lyle Overbay have a huge series against the Angels simply because he's starting for my fantasy team this week.
Want to see something funny? Go to redsox.com and see the lead story about how valuable JD Drew is becoming for his team: In his first season in Boston, J.D. Drew is handling everything that comes his way in stride. Not only is Drew helping to take care of his 17-month-old son, but the Red Sox outfielder is also becoming a valuable asset when it comes to outfield assignments
Let's take two!!! I'm excited to see Buchholz pitch . . . can't wait, in fact.
Not to drag the drama in from the other threads, but in light of all that has been happening, I'd just like to say once again how much I've enjoyed sharing this season (in good times and bad) with you guys.
Guess what? Another weekend away up North! I am PI$$ED I wont see Bucholz pitch today! But again no cable at the cottage so I will take a break from the Red Sox and hope to come back Sunday night with GREAT SOX NEWS!!!! It will prolly do Me and the Red Sox good to keep away for a couple days, we have had a rocky relationship as of late...
<< <i>I wish Wily Mo the best in the NL, hope he gets regular playing time and a hitting coach that teaches him how to make contact on breaking stuff. >>
sad to see we got nothing for him, regardless of how Arroyo has pitched
<< <i>willy mo might hit 35 homers with 200 strikeouts next season! >>
He might. I think he's got the swing to hit 40 homers even and strike out 250 times. Anyone that can throw a curveball should be able to strike him out.
