Aside from Mike Lowell's fielding, they looked much better tonight.

Dice-K should be fun to watch. Anyone else worried about his stamina in a five man rotation though?

Im more concerned about the pressure from the media both in Japan and the States.

    Looking good through 5 though.....

GREAT WIN! Dice looked great with 10K's in 7 innings work...not bad. I know, I know it was the Royals but it was a nice way for him to debut!!! We will take it!

What concerns me the most is the bottom of the lineup. Tek looked bad last year, bad in spring training, and looks bad early. Crisp has had one good swing after a weak spring. I know it is only 3 games but if Ortiz goes 0 for his first 50 I would still not be worried about him, but Tek and Crisp are a concern.

Not too shabby of a debut, eh? 7IP, 6H and 10K's - he was only in "trouble" one inning.

I agree about Varitek and the bottom of the order, but not too much. It's early, and Varitek is basically still coming back from a serious injury (Crisp was never 100% healthy last year either). Pedroia is a rookie, but all he needs to do is play solid defense and get on base at a decent clip from the 9 spot. The top 6 guys look solid as ever.

Not sure what happened to Schilling on Monday, but you saw Beckett throw strong yesterday. You have to love the starting rotation, even with Tavarez at the 5.

Varitek must be using Mirabelli's bat. No doubt Coco is using his own bat. That explains it all.

Six hitter lineup is problematic. Tek looks o-l-d.

Sad to say that since the steroid scandal really hit, he has dropped an awful lot of weight, and an awful lot of bat speed (and I am a big fan).image

We really cant call any hitter "problematic" yet either, 3 games?

Varitek's problems (and Crisp's) extend back much, much further than these three games.

My personal view is that I don't care if V-Tek hits below the Mendoza line so long as he's calling the pitches 4 out of every 5 games this year. I don't think it was a coincidence that our pitching stunk so bad down the stretch last year when he wasn't behind the plate.

As for Coco and Dustin, I'm willing to give them a little more time (but not much). I don't ever expect monster numbers from DP, but I had higher hopes for Crisp, as I'm sure we all did. I still think Coco is good defensively, but if he never starts to hit the way he's supposed to I think Theo and Tito are going to start pushing for Pena to get his at bats. We've got Ellsbury waiting in the wings too.

Often enough I find myself thinking Crisp is a bust, but given that he was injured and starting a fresh season healthy (I hope) the jury still needs to be out on him. He is not that far removed from productive seasons at Cleveland, I hope he can get to that level again.

    ctsoxfanctsoxfan Posts: 6,246 ✭✭
I'd give Crisp a few months to show what he can do, but I agree - there is probably a short leash on him this season. I'd like to see Pena get some more AB's, but where do you play him?

On Varitek, I agree strongly that he needs to be behind the plate, and any hitting you get from him is just a plus. He will hit, I'm not worried about that, but the way he calls the game and handles the pitching staff is just about the best in the game today.

On NESN, Remy said it best about todays game - the Sox played like they had early dinner reservations.

They swung at almost every first pitch, and showed no patience at the plate. Too bad for Wake.

Why is it that no one has mentioned that "Wake" was simply outpitched?

Nah - 9 times out of 10, the Sox would win that game today. Tejeda got a lot of long fly ball outs, and when the weather gets warmer, a lot of those balls wouldn't stay in the park. Wakefield pitched well enough to win, but got zero run support.

No argument from me on that. Big Papi is off to a very slow start, and the rest of the bats aren't helping much.

Yeah, and that's another thing. When Schill went out, I started to cringe. The middle relief has been bad the last couple of years, but this year seems particularly bad. Even with 100+ pitches, I think they should have let Schill go out for that 8th.

Well I hate to see Papelbon log any extra innings but Schilling was ready for the showers, he pitched a great game. I meen keeping him in there would have been a risk, say he ended up with a no decision or loss it would have been maddening and everyone would be screaming at Francona.

Schilling looked great tonight. I think Varitek deserves some credit as well for the way they pitched Texiera. Good move in keeping Papelbon in the pen.

Believe me I dont care if Tek produces big numbers at the plate or not he is so valuable to our staff it sometimes gets overlooked if he is not producing at the plate.
