I agreed with taking Schilling out, especially after I read his blog in which he stated that he pretty much ran out of gas when he recorded the last out in the 7th.
In addition to the warranted praise of Schilling, Papelbon, Ortiz and V-tek, I though Manny looked better than the box score indicated too. I'm excited for him to start hitting like Manny does.
Middle relief looks like it might be our Achilles heel this year. I'm looking forward to Timlin coming back, but I'm not even that confident in him as a set-up man anymore. If all our starters could throw 8 innings it wouldn't be a problem. Then again, once our offense starts performing up to their abilities we won't have to worry so much about having our middle relievers give up a run or two . . . hopefully, anyway.
Schillings blog is great, isn't it? I don't know of any other major league player that brings you into the game like he does with that blog, and he always has comments up after both good and bad performances.
Tavarez will be headed to the pen, hopefully Jon Lester will be able to reclaim that 5th spot in the rotation soon enough. But, Tavarez was actually the Sox' best starter last September, lost month though it was. He might surprise us still.

As long as Tavares is medicated he will be fine in a set up role, he just needs to realize a walk or a earned run with a couple of boos from the homecrowd is not that ghastley of a situation.
<< <i>The words "Red Sox" and "championship" have no business being in the same sentence. It's almost as silly as saying Britney Spears is an NBA Center. >>
Didn't you mean to write that it's almost as silly as saying that Derek Jeter is straight?
am I the only Sox fan not on medication? Varitek's bat matters, that's why he gets ten million bucks a year; Manny looks lazy at the plate; Tavarez pitched well when games didn't matter last year, he should be a mop-up guy to be brought in to eat up innings that don't matter; Timlin should have retired at the end of 2005; Lester has a lot of work to do, but I guess not as much as one would think if the goal were to merely be better than Tavarez; the commitment to Papelbon only in the ninth and only in save situations (Francona said it in Spring training) lasted maybe a day...the lack of setup relief may doom Papelbon to the DL sooner rather than later (wasn't this five out requirement what started to do him in last year?).
I still don't like what I see in the bullpen (other than Papelbon), on the base paths (stupid rules the day -- it's not aggressiveness), at the plate (where's the "moneyball discipline"?), or in the field (JD Drew obviously shouldn't put his wallet in his pants pocket during ballgames, it is preventing him from bending over to pick up easy grounders).
some people are just hard to please I guess.
I am happy that Keith Foulke is not in the bullpen
For what it's worth, I think Francona did the right thing by bring Papelbon in even for 5 outs. Today is an off day so he knew ahead of time that Papelbon would have at least a day to rest the arm. And besides, he hardly had to throw any pitches. I think he ended up throwing only 15. If that's too much stress on his arm he shouldn't be playing at all.

Derek Jeter as 4 World Series rings. The Boston Red Sox as a franchise have 6. I am being KIND mentioning the previous ANCIENT 5. Derek Jeter would be the ALL TIME franchise GREAT Sox shortstop. By a LARGE margin ......
making stupid and obviously horse crap statements about his sexuality prooves Sox fans have NOTHING on him
Say what you want about Red Sox championships and Yankee rings, thats fine but it still rings true that the Yankees were on the wrong side of the BIGGEST collapse in history at the hands of my beloved Sox. Sox fans love to hate Jeter but he can play for the Sox anytime as far as Im concerned.

Post season Collapse yes ..... the flaw with that little tidbit Paul is that the numerous Sox collapses in the past happened usually in the regular season, like last year, becuase they just were not good enough to make it far enough to collapse in LCS ...... 1986 is another story
By the way, there is absolutely no comparison to losing the way the Yankees did in 2004 to Boston. Sorry, but that was the worst collapse ever in baseball history, and even the majority of Yankee fans acknowledge that fact. To lose in the fashion that they did, on as big a stage as it was, with the series basically over, is something we will probably never see again in our lifetimes in any sport.

Oh absolutely Jerry, BUT I will take a collapse like that after all the GREAT times the Yankees have bestowed upon me as a fan. If it makes Red Sox fans all giddy then more power too you. See, when you ARE there more often then not the law of averages are gonna bite you in the a$$ sooner or later.
I guess Sox fans are so used to collapsing in June, July, August, and September that its just old hat. Lets not forget the over hyped prospects that helped contribute to last years version of the Boston massacre. The Yankees pounded the Sox into the dirt over those 5 games ..... the DIRT and sent those crappy prospects back to the minors and the bench.
I'm not sure what prospects you are referring to from last year - but again, a 5 game regular season series sweep, versus the greatest collapse of all time? I'll take the latter, thank you.
And as you stated Jerry that the 2004 memories will live forever in Sox lore as will 1977, 1978, 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000 in my memory. Can you see how your little one year of joy can be so easily forgotten by a Yankee fan with so many years to feel good about?
Hang on to your one year Jer
Edited to say that as pompous as this sounds ....... it is necessary to bring up that Yankee fans certainly don't dwell on 2004 like Red Sox fans have it as the lost ship that finally found that lighthouse in the fog.
I understand the logic of Yankee fans to downplay 2004 as "only one year" and similar statements. But what that fails to account for is how huge that one year was. While the past years you mention were tough on Sox fans, 2004 was so significantly embarassing for the Yankee empire, that it went a long way in evening the score. It was almost worth all the pain that came before.
So, that is why we hang on to 2004. It was a significantly historic time in Red Sox, and baseball history.
Honestly the '04 title would not have as much shine to it had we not went through NY,( lets not forget the suffering we went through when Boone hit that game winner ) for us to come back after that dreadfull first 3 games and win the series was the highlight of Red Sox lore. I got no problem hanging my hat on that.

I hear ya Jerry. BUT the score is far from even. I guess I can see Sox fans looking at it that way, at least younger Sox fans.

nice to see Papelbon not come back for the ninth of that game...I don't think that would have been the decision made last year. Timlin was a safe choice with a nine run lead.

What worries me the most about Crisp is that he looks absolutely clueless at the plate right now. Tek is still struggling but he is beginning to have longer at bats and hitting the ball hard. Crisp looks like he is guessing up there and constantly guessing wrong. Has he hit a ball hard to the outfield yet?
The starting pitching has been very good so far. Hopefully that trend will continue.
