Francona made the decision prior to the game he was going to sit out, I quess the "overworked thought process" is going through his mind as well as ours.
30+ pitches the other night coupled with his first blown save of the year, it was a fairly routine move to sit him tonight.

Alright, I will stop clogging up this great thread but I don't buy it. There is NOTHING routine about sitting your closer 2 nights in a row after a bad outing. If nothing else the real bulldog demands to be back on the horse right away.
Dan - they rested Papelbon because he threw 30+ pitches the other night and was off, and they rested Okajima because he has been pitching a lot lately. This decision was made before the game, and if you saw Papelbon's face in the 9th inning - he wasn't too happy about it. It's much more important to see him in September than May, at least that's what the team is thinking.
Nice win tonight, by 25 guys! We needed a little bit of everything to pick up for Dice-K, and we got it. And, Manny is being Manny again!
I always liked Timlin - but I agree, it's time for him to wind it down. I actually didn't want to see him come in the game Wed night, I was hoping Tito would leave Okajima in for two innings.
<< <i>I know it is early but D-Mat is not even close to over powering. I thought he would be as much as I did not want to see it. If this keeps up Kei Igawa's ERA will be neck and neck with D-Mat >>
Still gonna be a WHILE before he Catches Rivera...what is his 9 or so?
<< <i>I always liked Timlin - but I agree, it's time for him to wind it down. I actually didn't want to see him come in the game Wed night, I was hoping Tito would leave Okajima in for two innings. >>
Timlin is the man if you need someone to eat an inning...as long as you have a four run lead.
Yea I would like to see Okijima get a little more work in the middle relief spot, Tito definately should have let him stay in the other night. I am not oposed to him closing out a few games here and there as well...
Okajima could be an 80-games a year guy, so if he is limited to just one inning per appearance, I'm fine with that. The rest of the bullpen seems to be able to handle the workload
Well with Timlin headed to the DL I would like to see OKJ get more work, Romero and Donnelly are ok but OKJ I think is going to be huge down the stretch.
Tough team? Says who? You must be thinking about the Santana and Liriano Twins .... its a wee bit funny how when the Sox win its a good game vs a tough team but when the Yanks win its only because the other team stinks.
<< <i> Great job tonight, Papelbon lights out again! >>
Actually, I didn't think he looked that good. Location was not the old Papelbon. Better than the last outing for sure, but still wasn't what we are used too. Like Timlin the night before, he got lucky with a great play by Crisp.

Velocity was back up to 96, though, and location better than in the blown save. He'll be back to form the next outing.
I agree - he hit 96 and 97 on the gun, but his command was off a bit from what we have seen. I'm not that worried, he can't always be unhittable, but I would love to see a dominating save from him the next time out.
Nobody is around. That statement is just automatically barfed out by the hater network vis e-mail
All kidding aside, Barry, dont ya think this could have been kept in the Yankee thread?
These guys will say whatever they want, all I know is that Clemens will be a huge lift to our rotation not the mention the best tutor there could ever be for Phillip Hughes
Can't imagine Clemens is anything like a difference maker at this point. 7-6 last year. Anybody think he'll win more than 7 this year? That will be about $2m per win.
I am far from a Yankee fan, but its pretty obious the 7-6 record was a product of no run support. Something tells me that wont be a problem for him with the Yankees.
$28 million per year -- more than Beckett and Schilling combined. Plus the Yankees have to pay luxury tax on that. Man, I'll really feel bad if the snake-bitten Yanks get a line drive on the Rocket's ankle .
And, not suprisingly, we know what is most important to Clemen$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!

Oh lighten up, Softie I am joking of course. It IS incredible though, how snake-bitten the Yanks are this year, the latest blow being Tommy John surgery for Pavano, likely ending his Yankee career. I actually thought the Yanks were ultimately going to get more starts out of Pavano than the Red Sox got out of Clement.
For Clemens, a more likely scenario is a RJ-like performance. Enjoy your $39 million 4th starter!
I just get home from work and WHAMO! Just like that Clemens is a Yankee. Screw him! Thats the bottom line, $28 Mill for this year is a joke, I just hope when he gets to Fenway this year he gets a very loud BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO from Red Sox nation! Anything less will be unaceptable.
Of course, he will get soundly booed when and if he pitches at Fenway. If he partially burned his bridges the first time around leaving Boston, he has completely burned them now. Who needs the selfish #$%$# anyway? Just when you thought the Yankee$ were going a different direction with their player development, they remind you that throwing money at the problem is still job #1 in the Bronx.
But, how great is it going to be, beating him in a Yankee uniform? You can't buy that kind of enjoyment.
Yes I would love to see Clemens get booed off the field after getting shelled by Sox bats! Im telling you these Yankee's still need middle relief and I cannot see Clemens going 6-7-8 innings every outing.

Oh Boo Hoo friggen Hoo.
It is going to be so sweet watching the Sox collapse either in the season or in October after the last two weeks of mouth running. Clemens burned his bridges Yeah .... OK! Funny how history gets re-written by the angry Sox fan ..... of course we all know Roger was RUN OUT of Boston.
