Guys dont run me out of this thread but I dont think Lowell should be signed.. I believe he had a career year and to lock him up for "market value" for the next three or four years wont be a good move IMO. If and I meen IF we could possibly throw huge money at Johan Santana we should!
I'm watching that Drew Berrymore movie on TV about the Red Sox right now...agggggggggg...No but seriously, great job guys - congrats, gonna be tough to beat ya next year too with that line-up & pitching...no more Beckett please!!

Thank You! I look forward to another Division race next season!
Perk: I love Lowell too, but have an open mind about all players...Youk could play third if he had too - but we only want upgrades and Lowell is at minimum an All Star caliber player. He may not always be MVP caliber, but he was this year. Hate to see them hedge on Schilling or Lowell because of some of the other misfires Theo has had though. All that said, if the Yanks really are out on ARod, Lowell will be their targeted guy - won't be at all cheap.

Thats why I dont think it will be worth getting into a bidding war with NY over him, if they want to throw crazy money at him then let them, I dont see him being worth the big bucks he might demand. He will always have a place in my heart just as Damon does.
Perk, I'm with you on Lowell. He's a great guy and I like that guys like Varitek are sticking up for him. That's what good teammates should do. However, I don't think there's any way Lowell will produce anywhere near the way he produced in 2007. He'll be 34 when next season starts and he'll probably be looking for a 4-year deal. Let the Yankees give him $48-52 million over the next 4 years. By then we're going to have plenty of other younger guys we're going to want to resign when they become arbitration eligible and there's no point in paying that kind of money to a 37-year-old 3B. I like Lowell and I hope he gets a boat load of money. I just don't think the Red Sox should repeat the same mistakes they made in the 80's and 90's.
I also agree with BobaFett. Youkilis, while serviceable at 3rd, is a much better 1B and he should stay there. I've heard rumors that the Yankees are considering a trade for Miguel Cabrera (Melky Cabrera being the bait). I wouldn't mind seeing if the Red Sox could work their way into those trade talks . . . I don't know what the asking price would be (very high I would assume), but a very young Cabrera would make a nice addition at 3rd.
I heard that too. The Phillies could start to look like the 2005 Dodgers . . . a bunch of Red Sox castoffs.
Don't get me wrong, Schilling and Lowell are both great and I'd love to have them back, but this is a classic example of the stock market adage, "buy low and sell high."
Hi: I'm a longtime Sox fan who doesn't post much but I do check this thread every week.
Barndog said "Lowell knows what the Sox "did" to Bronson Arroyo, so don't expect a home town discount..
What exactly did the Sox "do" to Arroyo? Yeah they traded him for Willy Mo, but trades are part of baseball even if they're bad ones.
Why was that so bad?
BTW I loved Lowell hitting balls of the Green Monster all summer and would like him back next year. However anything over 3 years would be too much. Theo did well to avoid signing Pedro and Damon to long term deals.

I think what the Sox "did" to Arroyo was get him to sign a pretty cheap "hometown discount" contract which essentially increased his trade value exponentially. If he had been signed by the Red Sox at full market value he probably wouldn't have been so easy to trade. That was my perception at the time of the trade anyway.

exactly. Lowell won't be cheap for whomever signs him.
Geez, I wish I had something to add to this, but you've all pretty much summarized EXACTLY what's going to happen already.
As a long-time Sox fan myself, I loved Arroyo and Damon, but both of those moves needed to happen. I also love Lowell and I especially love Schilling, HOWEVER..... Lowell will not be like this forever. He's had a career year, and that's fine, but we need to get his "value" out of another player. If you buy stock at $10 and all of the sudden it soars to $100 per share and you KNOW that it'll go back down, what will you do? You'll sell it boys, that's what you'd do. Lowell is a gonner for sure.. and he will be missed.
The Phillies want both Lowell and an older, more tired Schilling and I think they'll get them. Both have done a lot for the Sox (especially Schill over the last few year) and will be missed, but it's just got to happen. Dont put everything on Theo... he's a brilliant man with a bright future in this organization.
Red Sox 2008: A-Rod at third, Lugo at short, Pedroia at second, Youk at first, Manny in left, Ellsbury in center and Drew in right. Dont forget one of my all-time favoite players: Tek doing the catching.
Now if we can make a good acquisition of another ace, then we'll be unstopppable. Keep Oki and Timlin in the pen with pap and Delcarmen, do what you will with the rest.
Ladies and gentlemen, then Yankees empire is a thing of the past. It's our time now.
..... six months till April.... and I feel fine....
its really in his best interests to stick around and play in Fenway, take the three year deal, play with a good bunch of guys in a great city, in a park where you crush the ball.
If Lowells not a Red Sox and the Angels don't sign Apod, Good chnace Lowell would end up in an Angels uniform. Every position is pretty much set, except 3rd base in Anaheim. Need someone with some pop!
So.. I stopped reading after the, like, 20th thread...
Cliff notes version, please.
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
youll miss neither gabbard or Arroyo. not with Clay ready for next year and if wakefield stays healthy the sox have a solid rotation. I wonder if they will try to go after a veteran to replace schilling.
Wakefield is staying, Tavarez is staying (oh well), and very importantly, Farrell (pitching coach) is staying. I'm thinking that Schilling will sign with the Sox for one more year at $13 million.
<< <i>When does the "2008 RED SOX CHAMPIONSHIP RUN" thread start? >>
exercising the option for Tavarez (trade bait) was the start. It will get rolling with discussion amongst GMs that should include much interest in Coco Crisp

Wow, you know pitching is at a premium when even mediocre ones still make $4m per year.

Ellsbury in center, he had a great run, but is he ready?? I'd like to see Tori Hunter out there as well
Lowell is next (hopefully). I didn't realize that among all major league third basemen, from 1998-2007, Mike Lowell has the highest fielding percentage. Throw in his great hitting this year, and the intangibles of team chemistry and leadership, and you have who I believe is the best third baseman in all of baseball (Payrod is not a third basemen in my book, actually I'm not quite sure what he is).
Hey Bosox fans, be sure to pick up a copy of the Sports Illustrated special commemorative issue featuring the 2007 Red Sox season - I just saw it today on the newsstand - it's quite a nice keepsake.
If they don't sign Lowell, Joe Crede is healthy again. Gold glove third baseman and best late inning, clutch hitter on the Sox the past 3 years. With the emergence of Josh Fields one of them has to go.
all the excellent play from Pedroia...and he did it with a broken bone in his wrist (read it on Boston.com or espn.com, forget which) for the past month-plus of the season!
<< <i>all the excellent play from Pedroia...and he did it with a broken bone in his wrist (read it on Boston.com or espn.com, forget which) for the past month-plus of the season! >>
Well, there certainly is no denying he is a tough SOB!!
I just read about Pedroia's hand today! What a gamer he is! He had many good things to say about Lowells leadership in the clubhouse which is something that we as fans dont really know too much about as far as its value to these kids.
I like the three year deal, hopefully Lowell will agree to it but Im sure he is going to wait to see other offers first.
Anyone see the '08 schedule for the World Champs? They have 19 of their last 28 at home and the final weekend the yankees pay Fenway a 3 game visit. I'm not in favor of them opening the season across the Pacific. I know it's great for P.R. and will bring lots of fans out to see Dice-K and Okajima - but it could cause a slow start to the season with malise from jet lag.
I know, I know, it's only the middle of Deceber, but it's never to early to start talking baseball.
