I like Flaherty, Oneill, Girardi, and Singleton. Kay is and always has been a homer. I don't blame you Jer because it probably would drive me nuts too.
Anyway, I am gone for the night ....... I will say it again, if there is anyway the Yanks can take ONE game I will be EXTREMELY happy. Its a long season
Awesome comeback by the Sox. As a Yankees fan, just turns the knife when they let two guys who are slumping worse than ever be the guys to beat them up. Yes, Im talking about Varitek and Crisp.
I was yelling at the TV when Torre put in Rivera in the bottom of the 8th with only one out. What a dumb move for a couple of reasons...1. Rivera hasnt had hardly any work. Just how good can he be when he has thrown only 7 innings so far this season? Does Torre really think he has his best stuff--and for 2 innings? 2. Why put in Rivera vs Varitek? Varitek was ON tonight and has also seen Rivera a whole heck of a lot more than Visciano or Farnsworth...or even Colter Bean for that matter! May as well put the BP coach in there for Varitek! There is just too much experience when it comes to Varitek vs Rivera.
Don't get me wrong, Im not making excuses for the loss...just saying what I didnt like seeing. It was a very important emotional win by the Sox.
BTW...Schilling looked like Mike Mussina out there today. A dead fastball serving up. Has Schillings arm already gone tired?
I don't think so - but Schilling has had a somewhat inconsistent start this season. First start was bad, then two strong starts, then last nights performance which I'd rate as average (though, only ARod beat him - take those 2 HR's out, and he has a much better line). He'll be fine, remember - he's playing for an extension for next season.
Torre made several moves last night that were odd. Not only Rivera in the 8th, but he probably took Petitte out too soon, and he pinch ran for Giambi which left someone with a weak bat in there in the 9th inning. I'm sure he had to answer all the questions last night after the game.
Is Rivera done? I don't just mean against the Red Sox (who haven't feared facing him for several years now, and actually have great success against him in key situations) but has age caught up to him? I know its only 2 games, but those were 2 of the toughest blown saves you'll ever see in regular season games.
I don't second-guess Joe Torre. His track record is the best in MLB, at least among active managers, isn't it? 99 44/100% of the time, Torre makes those moves and the Yankees win. Planets aligned for Crisp and Varitek to get hits that mattered. I'm a Sox fan and glad for the results, don't get me wrong, but the result was not due to Torre's incompetence.
Sorry I jumped to the conclusion on Dan's psot, I thought it was MORE excuses. Wel I doubt we can sweep the yanks so I am heading to the woodshed now. Hoping to see a win tomorrow in person
Nice job all around today - the hitters picked up a somewhat average performance by Beckett, and who needs ARod when you have Big Papi? It looks like Francona is going to use Okajima pretty regularly, I hope that he becomes the setup man if Timlin falters even one bit.
It's nice to see some of the guys that have been struggling start to get some more hits. I think I like the Sox better with Cora at 2nd than I do Pedroia.
I think today's game was the first time I have ever seen two Red Sox batters get bunt basehits back-to-back.
My one negative (aside from still pitching to A-Rod) is that Papelbon walked another batter in a close game. The last several times out he's made it harder on himself with those walks.
The Yankees are going to be scary when their starting pitchers get healthy again. I mean, "if" their starting pitchers get healthy again.
Somewhat average performance by Beckett? Being objective, he wasnt good at all. The only thing that kept him in the game was his curveball and the Bosox offense.. Yanks were all over that fastball. I was surprisd to see him get the ovation he did...it was the Bosox offense that deserved that applause. I guess he got it because he left the game with them winning. I know...he cant pitch that good EVERY game. He has done a great job for them so far this year.
<< <i>I think I like the Sox better with Cora at 2nd than I do Pedroia. >>
Cora is a very smart player - always has been. But, his bat usually isn't there, and Pedroia has the skills to hit, he just needs some time.
<< <i>The Yankees are going to be scary when their starting pitchers get healthy again. I mean, "if" their starting pitchers get healthy again. >>
I really don't see this being the case - who are they really missing here? Mussina? Wang? Surely not Pavano! Even healthy, the Yankee starting staff is their weak point, and will continue to be, unless they bring some people in mid-year. And, I wouldn't be surprised to see them do exactly that.
<< <i>Somewhat average performance by Beckett? Being objective, he wasnt good at all. >>
Let me explain - he stunk the first two innings, but then he actually settled in and retired 10 in a row before getting into trouble again. What disappointed me was how he pitched in the second inning, where he gave up hits (and 2 runs) to the very weak part of the Yankee lineup. I could live with him giving up the runs to the 3-4-5 part of the lineup, but you have to get Melky Cabrera out in that situation!
Fun series so far, feels like the middle of summer!
Great series and the 4 homers were flippin blasts, no cheapies there. Nice to see that the Sox starters pitched 20 2/3rd innings in the series when they did not have good command. Also, exciting that the three main pitching cogs the last two days, Beckett, Dice K, and Papelbon are all only 26 years old.
Congrats Red Sox fans on the sweep but we will be back. Dice-K was much more hit-able then I would have thought. It was the first time I saw him. Papelbon on the other hand..... That other Japanese pitcher looks really good also....a bargain compared to the $100 Mill the Sox spent on Dice.
"The answer was in the Patriots eyes. Gone were the swagger and c0ck sure smirks, replaced by downcast eyes and heads in hands. For his poise and leadership Eli Manning was named the game's MVP. The 2007 Giants were never perfect nor meant to be. They were fighters, scrappers....now they could be called something else, World Champions."
I've been to about 25 games a year at Fenway the past 10 years, including playoffs, and the third inning with the 4 straight homers was as loud as I've heard the park at any time. Every ball just seemed harder than the next. When Wily Mo came up and the "Make It Five" chant was going around, I think everyone honestly believed the barrage would just keep coming! What an awesome night at the old ballpark!
I was at the game too, I dont think I have ever seen such a great game like that, on TV or in person. It could have gone either way at any point in the game. I do think the Red Sox fans are getting as bad as the New Yorkers. The fans were cheering LOUD when A-rod and the other batter (was it Jeter) I didn't think it was too "cool" I doubt Dice K did it on purpose, though may have been told to do it. Even in the 9th inning everyone was in their seats, not a seat to be had either. I lucked out with a scalper
MAN!!! I feel great today!!! That series was such a great performance by both teams, very close wins by the Sox in all games I honestly could not hope for a better homestand! I will add that Dice letting up some runs like that was a bit alarming, but taking in consideration the Yanks lineup and the ferocious rivalry He got out alive with some Yank/Red Sox expierience. He knows what to expect now when he goes to the Bronx.
Lets stay focused and get through this next series which will be no picnic!
If anybody is looking to go to Fenway for a game I have a pair of tickets that I cannot use for an upcoming game.
I was at the rainout on Thursday April 12th against Seattle. I will not be flying in for the makeup game so I have a pair of tickets in Section 15 (they are not together but are in rows 2 and 4) for the make-up game on Thursday May 3rd. If the rotation holds and Taverez is not skipped Dice K is starting that day. If anybody is interested in buying the tickets at cost PM me.
This would have been a great time to build a lead while the Yanks continue to lose. I can't wait until Lester gets recalled and they can move Tavarez back to long relief, where he belongs.
"Say what you want about games and importance for April, or September, but the fact is they all count for one win, or one loss. Some wins are bigger than others, some losses as well. Beating the Yankees when trailing by 4 runs, hell beating ANY team when trailing by four runs in the 8th is a big win. Beating the best closer in the games history is a huge lift as well.
Common theory amongst many baseball people is that you win 50, you lose 50 and what you do in those other 62 is what determines the season. The last two nights we won games that should have been in the ‘lose 50’ column. That’s big no matter what day on the calendar it is, or who they happen against."
IMO, if you apply this theory to yesterday's games, I'd say that a game, even a home game, where the opposing pitcher is Roy Halladay, is a game that would fall into one of the 50 games you're going to lose category. On the other hand, the Yankees were away, but they were playing the Devil Rays and Wang was back on the mound for them. I think that for the Yankees, yesterday's game should have been one of their "50 wins" games.
The standings don't reflect this for obvious reasons, but to me, it felt like we picked up a half game in the standings yesterday. Does that make sense?
What I get out of it is the Sox should have lost to Halladay? And the Yanks should have won with Wang? The Sox game went that way but The Yanks did not so I think what he is saying is it evened itself out? Maybe? Bottom line every game counts and Schilling needs to get us back on track with a win tonight, the Yankees are capable of cracking off 20 wins in a row so we need to go out and play good baseball EVERY SINGLE GAME!
I felt bad for Lowell this series against the Jays. Man, he had some tough plays at third. It didn't seem like a routine ball was hit to him all series. Lowell also clobbered a Halladay fast ball in the fourth. I like the guy. I heard him say he was trying to learn Japanese so he could communicate better with Dice K. I like the makeup of your team. Hinske, though he made an error last night, is another great "team-first" guy. It's going to be an interesting year.
