I thought the schedule was supposed to be easier for the Sox this month. So far, the Sox are playing all the top teams, and the Yankees are playing the worst. And, those worst teams aren't even making an effort.
Yes, I'm not happy this afternoon. >>
Jerry, the Melky you are thinking about was the Melky that was a deer in the headlites for 2-3 weeks when he got called up for the first time a couple years ago. It is amazing how first impressions get entrenched in the mind huh? Melky has played a SOLID CF all year and really since that first few week debacle. And that is the truth ....
Now, these teams playing the Yankees not making an effort? Nah ... come on Jer, they are getting BEAT. Plain and simple
Melky is a good defensive player no doubt, and good for the Yankees! If they want the future of their team to consist of great defensive players who cant hit then all the power to them!
<< <i>Melky is a good defensive player no doubt, and good for the Yankees! If they want the future of their team to consist of great defensive players who cant hit then all the power to them! >>
<< <i>Melky is a good defensive player no doubt, and good for the Yankees! If they want the future of their team to consist of great defensive players who cant hit then all the power to them! >>
It's not fair to talk about Yankees players on your thread but I have to defend our young CFer here! Cant hit....47 runs scored, 49 RBI, .298 average, 7 HR...ok, so he isnt the most powerful but these numbers are all at the bottom of the lineup! I think thats pretty darn good for 360 at bats! I'll take that kind hitter at the bottom of the lineup any day!
And yes, Von, you are absolutely right about OF assists being misleading. People dont run on Vlad, Sheffield, and Ichiro for their great arms. I was only making the point is that teams are still testing Melky's arm and he is nailing them.
If it meant getting an average outfielder defensively to gain Manny's numbers, that would be an acceptable trade. Truth be told, Manny's an acceptable defender who gets flak for a couple of plays and the persona of 'manny being manny'.
Is there any team out there who *wouldn't* want Manny in left field?
<< <i>Manny ended up leading the league (I think) in OF Assists in 2005 with 17.
This means nothing. Any average outfielder with the green monster behind them should have a good amount of assists >>
I might not have been clear in what I was trying to communicate earlier so I'll clarify. My point was simply that OF assists don't tell the whole story of a fielder's defensive abilities and I was using Manny, a capable but not excellent fielder, as an example to prove my point. Manny has become very skilled at playing the Monster and throwing guys out and he led the league in OF assists because of it. That doesn't, however, make him a better left-fielder than someone like Carl Crawford who had fewer assists.
I hate to post 3 times in a row, but I've got to vent. It's really frustrating to me when the first couple batters get on base with no outs and your "best" hitters only manage to drive in a single run. Now and then it's understandable, but it seems to me like this is happening to the Sox with way too much frequency. The other thing that frustrates me is what I feel to be a lack of aggressiveness. Last night, for example. We needed two runs to stay in it in the 9th. Ortiz had a great at bat and ended up walking (which is normally fine) but in that situation he had to know that the chances of Brandon Moss getting on base against K-Rod was slim to none. Ortiz should have been swinging for the fences.
Von I agree 150%! I want these guys to realize you need to give yourself the best shot EVERY time now, sure earlier in the game Ortiz should take a free pass but when the game is on the line with men on, he needs to do his job! DRIVE THEM F-IN RUNS IN!!!!!!!!! If he k's so be it, let the captain go down with the ship right?
C'MON LETS GO RED SOX!!!!
OK, HERE WE GO RED SOX!!! HERE WE GO!!!! HERE WE GO RED SOX HERE WE GO!!!!!

You guys should have kept Orlando Cabrera. He played well under pressure and was a real thorn in the Yankees side. He helped you guys to the promised land.
"The answer was in the Patriots eyes. Gone were the swagger and c0ck sure smirks, replaced by downcast eyes and heads in hands. For his poise and leadership Eli Manning was named the game's MVP. The 2007 Giants were never perfect nor meant to be. They were fighters, scrappers....now they could be called something else, World Champions."
This 5th inning has been the worst inning of the season for the Red Sox so far. Inept defense, bad decisions, and an ump that squeezed Wakefield beyond belief. And it isn't even over yet.
I don't know what it is about him, but every time I hear the name "Melky Cabrera", I have visions of him misplaying balls in the outfield, slipping and falling while chasing after fly balls hit over his head, and other slip-ups of that nature. I clearly don't watch the Yankees every day, but didn't he used to really stink in the outfield?
When Melky came up in 2005 he was only 20 years old and made a couple of errors and the Yankees sent him back down to the Minors. Last year he did great offensively and defensively filling in for an injured Matsui and Sheffield. When Matsui and Sheffield came back Torre took Melky out of the starting line up. I always felt messing with the Yankees chemistry in addition to putting a still healing Matsui back into RF and Sheffield at 1B was a very bad move. This year Melky started on the bench but when Damon started breaking down in CF Torre put Melky back there in the starting lineup. He started out slow offensively but still played great defense. He is on fire offensively now batting .302. He had two doubles and a triple tonight.

I have always liked Wakefield and wouldn't mind if he was on the Yankees. The life of a Knuckle Baller....either very very good or very very bad.

I just read through a little "cheer up" story on the Boston Globe's web site. They were saying that the Red Sox have had a difficult schedule since the All-Star break and the Yankees have been feasting on the bottom feeders. That may be true, but what does it matter? If we can't consistently beat these good teams, how far can we expect to go in the playoffs if we make it that far?
Cabrera will be available in other year. Angels will not resign him. Aybar is waiting in the wings. Plays like a young Cabrera witha little more flair. Plenty of gap power.
Might be a hitters game tonight. Both starters unproven. Lester coming off DL and Mosley being a Middle releiver until a few weeks ago.
The Angels might pull off the sweep, like they did with Detroit a few weeks ago.

Here's something interesting I read this afternoon - from one of my favorite Sox blogs:
Nobody in their right mind really thinks the Yanks and Sox, or their fans, are the same. That's just something people say to piss of Sox fans. It's a laughable idea. I've given you many reasons here over the years to support my position on this. But while Murray Chass is claiming the teams are the same, I'm receiving emails from the Yanks offering tickets for FIVE DOLLARS on weekdays and HALF PRICE on weekends for much of the rest of the season.
The Red Sox don't need to make ridiculous offers to their fans to get us to come out to Fenway. But the Yanks, even with the team's recent surge against the Little League teams of baseball, have to basically GIVE tickets away to get people to come out. Once they do, they need not fear if they don't know when to cheer--the Yankee Stadium scoreboard and organ WILL TELL THEM WHEN TO!
There are fundamental differences between these organizations. When people tell you they're the same, check their brain switch, and feel free to flip it on for them.
So, the ONLY post Jerry makes on this thread has to do with Yankee fans .... WELL after the Angels crushed the Beantown slackers?
Typical fair weather fan And just WHAT does that horse crap little tid bit that Jerry ALWAYS seems to unearth when the Sox look like crap have to do with anything?
A SOLD OUT WITH STANDING ROOM crowd in Fenway would be LOST in the vastness of Yankee Stadium. What a bunch of $hit
all of the sudden the Yankees are right back in playoff contention and GONE are the remarks about cellar dwellers, the Yanks suck, the pitching, the hitting, Jeter is this and that, bla bla bla bla friggen bla.
Now its about Yankee fans AGAIN ..... and so predictable
I type this as the Yanks are getting beat up by the Jays ..... I don't wait for moments when things are really going good to get my knocks in. Thats what Sox fans around here do for the MOST PART. Except Jerry He is pretty steady with his propaganda
Dan, surely you didn't mean to say that the above was my only post in this thread? I'll assume you meant to say something else (another thread, maybe?) since I obviously have been posting on this thread with regularity since day one.
<< <i>Let me add this too

Let me rectify that for you right now - The Yankees suck, Jeter is the most overrated player in baseball history, ARod is a bush-league player, and the Yankee pitching staff is awful, especially that old guy that gets a zillion dollars a start for his 4.00 ERA.
Well it looks like NY will NOT be able to slug out another win so we need to make our move tonight with a WIN! We got Beckett and Dice coming up against the hapless O's so we can get back on track if all goes well.
