The first inning has been sloppily played by the Red Sox. Lugo getting picked off wasn't good. Drew's errant throw to 3rd and Lowell's lack of effort were unsettling. And I don't like tonight's lineup. I understand Ortiz being out of the lineup because his shoulder's bugging him, but I don't like that WMP is playing in left, Drew is playing in center, and Moss is playing in right. Why not leave Drew in right? And screw giving Coco a couple days off. He's been mashing lately and we could use him in the lineup and in the field--especially while trying to avoid a sweep.
Lester is looking like I was afraid he was going to look like, he wasn't exactly lights out in AAA so Im not sure why the Sox brass thought he would do better? Bringing him up into this stressfull battle in the AL east for crying out loud!
I fear that not grabbing another starter may have been a huge mistake. Hopefully not as much as it hurts not getting another bat!
Perkdog, I agree. Lester wasn't exactly dominating in AAA. It makes me wonder if they thought promoting him would give him some extra confidence which would translate into success? He's pitched okay overall (I guess), but it does kinda make me wish we still had Gabbard especially since Gagne has been less than "lights out" so far.
This second half has been really, really frustrating. I understand from our perspective things are much different than what goes on in Theo's mind and the clubhouse for that matter, but seriously the decision making has not been up to par IMO. Did they feel that our weak bench issue would just go away on its own? Or the fifth starter situation? Maybe they should have tested out Lester before the trade deadline? like when Tavares was being... ah like Tavares?
I hate to be a whiner but we are in first place with a very tough Yankee squad nipping at our heels and it seems to me like the Sox brass kinda just wants to ride it out, Gagne was a good pick up but it really did not address our pressing needs.

I still think Lester is going to be fine - he hasn't even started a game at home yet (all 4 starts have been on the road). And, Ortiz is probably not going to be the same until he is completely healthy, which might not be until the off-season.
No worries at all. The road gets easier for us, and a lot tougher for the other guys.
OK FELLAS!!!! LETS GET THIS PARTY STARTED RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DICE ON THE HILL!!!! LETS GET CHARGED UP!!!!!!!!!!!
And I will have you all know... I am AGAIN going away for the weekend so hopefully me being away until Sunday will do the Sox good like it did awhile back, remember!

Oki didn't deserve the loss tonight. A certain fat, french guy lost the game for us.
I am extremely grateful for the Texas Rangers coming through on their threat to the Yankees and trading this, what you call him, Fat French Guy, to the Red Sox. Not only do we get to keep the Melkman who I love, but Texas has helped our cause. to the Texas Rangers GM!
"The answer was in the Patriots eyes. Gone were the swagger and c0ck sure smirks, replaced by downcast eyes and heads in hands. For his poise and leadership Eli Manning was named the game's MVP. Wow, was that the guy you guys traded all of those prospects for? The two month rental? E-gads .....
Jerry proclaimed "See you in 2008" to Yankee fans in the Yankee thread right after that trade. Sure hope he works out better then he has ...... I guess
Cashman is coming out smelling like roses on this one knowing he had Joba. That is why he let Proctor go. Cashman is finally giving the young pitching studs a chance.

Oh, I forgot to say Dice-K has been pitching great since his mediocre start. Not sure he is worth $100 Million or whatever they are paying him though.

Yes, that's correct. That should be taking into account when paying someone.

If you were going to buy a new home for $400,000 but the Real Estate agent got an additional $400,000 from you would you do it?

The extra 50 mil paid to the Dice K's old team does not go against the BB luxury tax. The negiotiating amount was considered as an investment in the Japanese market, which is something the organization wanted in addition to picking up Dice-K (or any other top tier Japanese player). Dice-K is essentially making Matt Clemente money and is underpaid in my opinion compared to other pitchers in the league of the same calibre. The Sox probably paid just as much to get partnered into the NASCAR circuit.
Look at what the Sox paid the bumbling stumbling JD Drew. That was a 14 million dollar play on that ball in right field last night huh Sox fans?
Listen, we can go back and forth all day about who spent money on who and what and bla bla bla bla ..... bottom line is there are two kids on the Yankee pitching staff making the league minimum who toyed with the Indians last night in every way. Look out, here we come

No one has spent as much money foolishly as the Yankees. Period. I saw that their "answer" to the Dice-K signing, Kei Igawa, was claimed by the Padres from waivers already? Great job scouting that one, Cashman.
That was a tough one last night. It was almost like the Orioles got their revenge for the game back in May where the Sox came back from 5-1 in the 9th to win 6-5 against their closer, Chris Ray. That to me was one of the most exciting games of the season. Dice-K really pitched well last night, and didn't deserve to lose. I don't think this is a permanent issue with Gagne, but I do hope they go back to Okajima in the 8th for the near future. Why mess with what has worked all season long?
And, since Dan loves it so much (and this morning, Sox fans need a good laugh) here's todays blog post of the day -
On the morning of July 20, the Red Sox led the Yankees by 6.5 games.

No, it's because you had a 14 game lead, and now it's 5.
The yankeehawks are out in force after cruising through the easiest month of scheduling their team will have all year.
Now, going into the next 30 days, the yanks are facing the toughest month of their schedule...let's see how well they do, and see how many 'fans' are crowing about the yankees if they go sub .500 and drop back to 10 out.
Those that post then will be the real fans...people like softy. The lame folk that disappeared in the early part of the season will do another disappearing trick if the yanks fall 10 games back again.
Nice win today. I'm still reeling a bit from last night's fiasco, but Josh Beckett is having a great year and we needed this win badly. Let's hope Schilling is sharp again and that he gets some run support tomorrow.
back from Milwaukee, haven't checked ESPN.com yet, but figure the Sox are holding on to first for a while. I understand that Eric Gagne is in the running for the spot that JD Drew seemed to have a firm grasp on as far as fans' opinions are concerned.
I think Gagne has proven himself AGAINST us time after time, where Drew is relatively unknown. I STILL got nothing but respect for Gagne. Although a few more outings like that....
Manny's overall play in the top half of the 3rd today was a perfect microcosm of the way he plays. His double was huge because it drove in the two runs, but then he makes a stupid play and gets thrown out at 3rd on a passed ball that didn't go but a few feet away from the catcher. Had he not been thrown out he probably could have scored on Drew's base hit. Manny being Manny, right?

No Ortiz in the lineup, either. We need to salvage this one game from a very tough road trip.
M's doing all they can and beating up on the hapless Orioles, the Angels continue to win.
Can we move Papelbon back to a starter?
Didn't Ortiz hit 54 HRs last year? - or was that a dream...
I fear that not grabbing another starter may have been a huge mistake. Hopefully not as much as it hurts not getting another bat!
