Well, Boys and Girls, I was the underbidder of the one coin I truly lusted for on Heritage's auction this evening. The 1896-O Half in PCGS 58.
I requested and received a phone call from Carlotta of Heritage while I was watching the auction Live - and I bumped my max bid to where I thought the coin would end up - but there was a floor bidder - a woman - probably Laura - bidding in the background. I stopped at $10,500 - and it sold for $11,000 plus buyers fees - or - $ 12,650.
I guess my AU 55 isn't so bad after all...LOL.
Other coins of note, that I was strictly tracking, were the 1901-S Half in PCGS 55 and the 1904-S Half in PCGS 58. Both did poorly IMHO - the 01-S sold for $2,600 + 15% = $2,990 and the 04-S sold for $7,000 + 15% = $8,050. I seriously thought the 01-S would bring $3750 with the buyers fees - and the 04-S would bring $11,500 with the buyers fees.
Anyone have an opinion on these three coins - any insights into the quality for the grade of these "Three Kings" ?
I was the lucky bidder on three coins - all their images are too large to post - so off they go to my good friend and our main computer Guru - Dave99B - to resize for me.

92S ANACS VF20 to PCGS VF25 94S ANACS VF30 to PCGS VF30 95O NGC XF45 ----------DNC
The ANACS were the new holders.
I did not cross "at any grade" so maybe they thought the 95-O was XF40----oh well.
I'm real happy with the 92-S though.
On a side note and off topic, the other two coins were:
09S Lincoln ANACS VF35 to PCGS VF35--was hoping for a XF40 24D Lincoln NGC XF45BN to PCGS XF40BN--I'm OK with this. The coin is a sweet brown with nice eye appeal.
Barber Question - I picked up a 1882 Mexican Republic 5 Centavos reverse die cap error which was only struck from 1882-1883. It has such a strong resemblance to a US Barber Liberty Nickel. Did Barber borrow the reverse design for his nickel from an obsolete south of the border denomination
To Err Is Human.... To Collect Err's Is Just Too Much Darn Tootin Fun!
OK yes I know that there are Barber 1881 and 1882 patterns for the V Nickel, but since Mexico was already using their design... the question now is knowing when Mexico's patterns where struck?
Also no Mexican coinage was struck at the US mint until 1898.

Mike, I actually viewed all three of these pieces on the morning of the live auction. Here are my thoughts after viewing the coins "in hand":
1896-O - This coin had numerous small and one very serious hairline across the cheek. You are actually lucky you didn't win this one, Mike. And $12,000 is absolutely INSANE money for that date in AU58. Nothing justifies that price. NOTHING. Not even the whole Registry Set nonsense.
1901-S - A very ugly looking AU in my opinion. The toning was very mottled and just downright nasty.
1904-S - This coin had decent eye appeal, only moderate luster, and some major "shine" to it, telling me that it definitely had been dipped FAIRLY RECENTLY in its history.
All in all, I would not have bid on a single one of those coins at near the prices they each sold for.
<< <i> - and it sold for $11,000 plus buyers fees - or - $ 12,650.
the 96-0 is a tough coin........but that's 63+++ money. (you're gonna hate that 50, Mike, just send it back! hehehe)

There are 8 1904-s in 58 at PCGS and 12 at NGC in 58. Wonder if that has anything to do with it?
We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.

Cary,
I have to agree with you.....insane money for the 96-O, the price comes to about 11X retail. The only plausible explanation is the registry battle over one of two 96-O's, graded by PCGS in AU-58. For that kind of money, it might have been cheaper to wait for a low mint state graded example, and wear her down to AU-58.
When I originally purchased my 96-0, (seen in my opening post), from Harry 2 years ago, I thought I was losing my mind with what I paid for the coin. This latest Heritage auction is making me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
Dan - You can only feel warm and fuzzy inside if you owned one of the AU 58's. And, you're 100% right about buying a lower end MS example and wear it down to a 58...however, look what happened to Craig on the 1905-P...he submitted three coins - two of which were in PCGS 50 & 40 holders and he cracked them out. The AU 50 coin came back Altered Surfaces - the third coin he submitted was easily an XF 45 - raw to start with and that also came back Altered Surfaces.
BTW, the MS 64 example of the 1896-O at the Platinum Night @ Heritage - closed at $13,000 plus 15% = $14,950...and I was sooooo tempted...it was just a click away. Yes, I was underbidder on that one too.
Cary - Thank you for the in-detailed descriptions of the Three Kings. Whoever bought the 96-O in 58 - I hope you enjoy it for a long time... a long long time. Its amazing how you can get caught up in getting what you want and loose sight of the reality of the piece.
No images to post yet - will do so once I get them back.
Happy hunting everyone !!

Sorry the 96O didn't work out for you, Mike. But if you had found out you overpaid for a coin with problems, that would be worse yet I think.
Shifting gears way down to low speed, I picked up this half at a local show this weekend. Common date I know, but for 20 bucks under XF40 Bid I couldn't pass it up:
<< <i>Was the 1896-O really hammered at 11 times retail? >>
I wouldn't say 11 times retail. To be honest with you, I had locked in a bid of $3750 for the longest time and thought that would secure it. I thought that was more than fair a bid. I thought the "retail" on the coin was closer to $1500- 1800. But we all know that there is no definitive price of these key dates in high end collector grades. [ ie: AU 58 ]...especially concerning a Key Date with a low POP of only Two.
When the one and only 1901-S in PCGS AU 58 was auctioned off a couple of years ago - everyone - including myself, thought that I'd be the happy winner of that POP-One coin. Not so; it sold for high 5K, and my max was low 5K.
After all this discussion on low POP coins in AU 58, I now have to laugh at what happened to me at FUN last January. I spotted a beautiful 1902-S Half in PCGS 58 at the Stack's table. I asked Melissa, who waited on me, if there was anything they could do on the ask price of $1,000 on that coin...she asked someone behind the scenes whom I didn't recognize and he said no, "that was the price." I didn't realize at that moment that it also was a POP-Two coin. [ It still is a POP-Two coin in AU 58 ] . I'm glad I bought it - even though I also had another 02-S in PCGS 55 - which was an EX: NGC 58 coin.
Although I have tried staying with AU 58's, if they are unavailable, I've been upgrading to mid range MS coins and the AU 53 & 55's are sliding into the second tier collection. That will be the situation with the 1897-S which has a POP-Zero in AU 58. I just won't be adding coins in MS as quickly as AU 58's due to financial constraints.
I also want to thank Cary for his efforts on my behest locating PCGS AU 58's. None were to be found - period - at the CSNS. Let alone any from my want list. I'm down to 10 coins I'll be upgrading. Once that "Feat is Complete" - the entire set goes into PCGS for Tru-View imaging and Pedigree designation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Edited to add:
Walkerguy21D -
That's a very nice 1906-D - looks AU 53 to me and you got it for less than XF 40 bid price ? Great Pick-Up !!!

Edited to add: I have posted the 2nd and 3rd Tier collections on the Registry Forums and the BST.
A large number of coins have already sold to date [ 4/25/08 ] - but there are quite a few more which are quite choice for their grade. Please feel free to look at the images - which are the previous owner's - and if the coin does not say Sold or Not Available - feel free to PM me here at PCGS. Emails sent to my comcast email address may got get responded to as quickly as you'd like.

Walker21d, that is a very nice 1906 D and a great price, too! I usually strike out at the one or two shows per year I can get to.
Do your best to avoid circular arguments, as it will help you reason better, because better reasoning is often a result of avoiding circular arguments.
Although I didn't have any luck finding anything from all the want lists I received, I did manage to find a few upgrades to my midgrade set of halves at CSNS. Here are the two nicest looking ones (nice and crusty, the way I like 'em):
Here are the two upgrades to the Half Dollar collection...
And a special Thank You to Broadstruck - who loves spending my money when he locates things I need to upgrade my collection - an extremely nice 1916-D Quarter - via Barndog - who also deserves a Thank You as well for sending me this stunning coin, in PCGS AU 58:
I still have to have the reverses of the 1908-O and 1912-P reduced as they're too large to post - as well as the 1873-CC Trade Dollar in PCGS AU 53 - recent purchase from Heritage. [ Images are on my Registry set.]
...and no, I'm not buying an 1894-S dime - and no - I'm not letting the cat of the bag until I have consumated the deal on the coin in question.
...if the deal does go thru on the above alluded to coin - my 2nd set of halves will be on the BST or sent immediately to one of my favorite dealers who'll be more than happy to take them off my hands.
...cherry pick what appeals to you and let me know via a PM ... if the deal goes sour on the coin I'm after - then all bets on the 2nd set of halves are off...sorry to say.
...and yes, I realize all of the above discussion should be on the Registry Forum and I apologise in advance if I've ruffled anyone's feathers. The Barber Mega Thread seems to have taken on a life of its own and sometimes discussions of the potential sale of a coin or a group of coins slip in. No further mention of anything I have for sale will be made in this Forum. At the moment nothing is actually for sale in the 2nd set of halves - but in the very near future, this could change; should this happen - I'll post on the Registry Forums and the BST . Thank you for your indulgences.
Happy Hunting.

Just won this 1893-P in PCGS 58 on Heritage's Final Auction @ CSNS tonight.
...sorry the reverse image is too large to post...its on the #1 set on the Registry though.
I liked the new coin alot more - [ because of the toning ] - than the other AU 58 I had - which was a little too white ... here are both obverse images:
THE CSNS COIN
THE OLDER AU 58 COIN
So...the older AU 58 slides into the second tier collection and the other 1893-P in AU 53 slides into the 3rd set - whose image is unavailable at this moment.
Thank you to all who have reserved coins from my second & third tier collections. I have yet to receive the images of my proposed NEWP...
Edited to add: I won't be posting again until I have something to report about the NEWP.
I just realized that I'm now at exactly 3,500 posts - looks like I'll have to come up with some sort of a Give-Away - prize will be ... three guesses... a Barber from my Duplicate Collection ... maybe a certified Dime this time [ I can't believe I already have a few dupe's in the Dime Collection !! ] I'll follow up in a seperate Thread about the Give-Away.
My last Give-Away was when I hit 2,000 posts last year. I can't believe I'm posting more than five times a day ! So how come the post count of this Thread is only just over 1,700 posts ?

Mike,
I actually viewed all three of these pieces on the morning of the live auction.
1904-S - This coin had decent eye appeal, only moderate luster, and some major "shine" to it, telling me that it definitely had been dipped FAIRLY RECENTLY in its history.

which are quite choice for their grade. Please feel free to look at the images - which are the previous
owner's - and if the coin does not say Sold or Not Available - feel free to PM me here at PCGS. Emails
sent to my comcast email address may got get responded to as quickly as you'd like.

collection alot sooner than I anticipated ! >>
I just checked.......1894-s PFBM Dime..........POP-5.......
Dude, what is it you do for a living?

Broadstruck pays VERY well. If his mail clerk/assistant can afford a 94-S dime, just imagine what he pays his CFO!!!
Ditto what Newbarberguy said - very nice 92-P, Cary.
The other 08-D isn't anything to sniff at either !! You do like "crusty" don't you !!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here are the two upgrades to the Half Dollar collection...
And a special Thank You to Broadstruck - who loves spending my money when he locates
things I need to upgrade my collection - an extremely nice 1916-D Quarter - via Barndog -
who also deserves a Thank You as well for sending me this stunning coin, in PCGS AU 58:
I still have to have the reverses of the 1908-O and 1912-P reduced as they're too large to post - as well as the 1873-CC Trade Dollar in PCGS AU 53 - recent purchase from Heritage. [ Images are on my Registry set.]
...and no, I'm not buying an 1894-S dime - and no - I'm not letting the cat of the bag until
I have consumated the deal on the coin in question.
...if the deal does go thru on the above alluded to coin - my 2nd set of halves will be on the BST
or sent immediately to one of my favorite dealers who'll be more than happy to take them off my hands.
...cherry pick what appeals to you and let me know via a PM ... if the deal goes sour on the coin I'm after - then all bets on the 2nd set of halves are off...sorry to say.
...and yes, I realize all of the above discussion should be on the Registry Forum and
I apologise in advance if I've ruffled anyone's feathers. The Barber Mega Thread seems
to have taken on a life of its own and sometimes discussions of the potential sale of a
coin or a group of coins slip in. No further mention of anything I have for sale will be made
in this Forum. At the moment nothing is actually for sale in the 2nd set of halves - but in
the very near future, this could change; should this happen - I'll post on the Registry
Forums and the BST . Thank you for your indulgences.
Happy Hunting.

Yeah, I got the inference too...I was just being a "BUSTER".
Oh, I threw-in a Low Ball Bid oneBay the other day and found out I won this 1916-D
{ looks like more Trading Material when the time comes.} The new quarter I'm
picking up from Barndog is alot nicer - and as Broadstruck and I call it "AU 64".
eBay's coin:

Looks like my PCGS AU 55 slides into the second set.

...sorry the reverse image is too large to post...its on the #1 set on the Registry though.
I liked the new coin alot more - [ because of the toning ] - than the other AU 58 I had - which
was a little too white ... here are both obverse images:
So...the older AU 58 slides into the second tier collection and the other
1893-P in AU 53 slides into the 3rd set - whose image is unavailable at
this moment.
Thank you to all who have reserved coins from my second & third tier collections.
I have yet to receive the images of my proposed NEWP...
Edited to add: I won't be posting again until I have something to report about the NEWP.
I just realized that I'm now at exactly 3,500 posts - looks like I'll have to come up with some sort
of a Give-Away - prize will be ... three guesses... a Barber from my Duplicate Collection ... maybe
a certified Dime this time [ I can't believe I already have a few dupe's in the Dime Collection !! ]
I'll follow up in a seperate Thread about the Give-Away.
My last Give-Away was when I hit 2,000 posts last year. I can't believe I'm posting more than five
times a day ! So how come the post count of this Thread is only just over 1,700 posts ?

MFH, I almost tossed a bid in on this waiting for my SLQ to cross the live auction...
I figured there might be a chance if it was in a AU58 holder that you might be looking to hoard another in your polygamistic Barber harem!
<< <i>Just won this 1893-P in PCGS 58 on Heritage's Final Auction @ CSNS tonight... sorry the reverse image is too large to post >>
MFH, The Reverse is a Knock-Out!
<< <i>Hard to tell from that image, but I'm gonna say probably a 64. >>
Nope!
