Got some bad news today. The wife----Roxanne------had a galbladder attack last week. She needs it removed as well as her appendix. I know it's OT, but I consider you guys friends and I'm worried about her image

Thanks and here's one I haven't posted before. It's a F12----nice look too, I think. The scratch is on the holder.

    Tom,

My thoughts are with you. Please give my best wishes to your wife.
I hope to meet her one of these days. Any wife who's as involved in
our hobby as Roxanne is - is someone I'd like to meet.

Here's a couple of coins that should bring a smile to her face:

Mighty pretty coin you're picking up there, mighty pretty.

Gentlemen, may I present the wife-------

Hi guys! Thanks for all your kind words and prayers. It's nice to see Tom has some friends here. I still shake my head as to why someone would pay more than 50 cents for a half dollar, but Tom said we should post this coin. He explained that if it was a quarter of the same date and mint mark it would be worth 30 times what this is.

With all your good wishes I'm sure I'll be around for another 25 years to keep Tom straight

    Roxy,

Thanks for the post. We were all hoping you would be up and around soon - but, Tom, let her get some bed rest - she can image your new coins later. Nice job there, Roxy.

Like that 01-S - and Roxy, hope you like her new sisters...image

    << <i>Mike, Is it an AU 1901-s Quarter????????? >>

Lets just say its a POP-Five coin. Its a Barber design.

And no, its not a 1913 V Nickel.

    Details pending.

Looks like I'll be selling off my duplicate Half Dollar
collection alot sooner than I anticipated !

Edited to add: I have posted the 2nd and 3rd Tier collections on the Registry Forums and the BST.

A large number of coins have already sold to date [ 4/25/08 ] - but there are quite a few more
which are quite choice for their grade. Please feel free to look at the images - which are the previous
owner's - and if the coin does not say Sold or Not Available - feel free to PM me here at PCGS. Emails
sent to my comcast email address may got get responded to as quickly as you'd like. >>

There are no images as of yet but this month I completed a set of Barber dimes in AU save for an XF-45 1895-O dime that I like better than most AU-50s and an 1896-S in MS 63 because I liked the value. I started collecting these at the November 2006 Baltimore show and had all but two of them 14 months later. The last two (1895-S amd 1896-S) I got this month. I'll regret it later but they are in a Dansco.

During that same time period I have also been working on the quarters and halves in AU. I'm down to three quarters - two R-6s (not the big 3) and one R-1 (which I can never understand but know it happens a lot) and nine halves - all of you know how hard these are to find.

I appreciate this thread a lot as it has helped me with pricing and finding coins.

Pray tell, which quarters and halves are you down to? As you know, it's kind of a sport around here to discuss which coins are toughest from every vantage point? You may even get those wacky pm's with offers to helpimage

    Mowgli,

Let me guess on the quarters...1902-O & 1906-O have to be amongst the missing !!
Two of the toughest dates to locate for my collection - I never did locate a nice AU - 06-O,
I settled for a MS 64 in an NGC holder - now resides in a PCGS 63 holder.

    Good luck.

    Okay the nine missing halves in AU are as follows: 92-S; 93-S; 96-O; 97-O; 98-O; 01-S; 05-O; 09-O; 11-S

The three missing quarters are as follows: 1897; 1909-O; 1914-S.

Mike, I don't remember having trouble finding the 02-O or 06-O but I was very lucky at the 2007 FUN show finding a lot of higher rarity coins. My 02-O is only an AU-50 but the 06-O is an AU-55.

    tombr and Roxy (particularly Roxy),

You might want to delay surgery for awhile like I did (over 1 year) so that you can take full advantage of the wonderful weight loss benefits of a ZERO-fat diet. If you try sneaking a piece, or a bite, of pizza or even a potato chip, well, your gall stones let you know that that was a SERIOUS mistake. I lost 25 pounds over a year, even though I was eating fat-free pretzels by the bagful.

OK, maybe that wasn't a good idea. Good luck with your surgery.

As soon as had the gall bladder removed, I ordered a pizza and proceeded to gain 30 pounds in 6 months. Enjoy your recovery.

Mowgli - there's a 1909-O quarter in NGC coming up at Heritage next month I think its rated a 58 - not too bad a coin but I doubt it'll get a 58 at PCGS. I just sold my duplicate 05-O Half in PCGS AU 58.

And as long as we're sharing Want Lists - here's my Half Dollar want list in AU 58 :

    95-S, 96-O, 97-O, 97-S - yes I know that there's an NGC 58 coming up at Heritage next month,
98-S in a PCGS holder only as I have one in an ANACS 58 holder as a duplicate now,
    99-O, 00-S, 01-S [ my Nemisis Date ], 02-P, 05-S, 09-O, 11-D, 11-S, 14-S and 15-P.

My quarters are too numerous to mention now - but want to upgrade all the 53's and 55's to 58's or 64's.

The dimes are very slowly being worked on - nothing in 58 comes around very often as their value isn't
worth holdering even at the economy level it seems , except for the scarcer dates and keys.

The Trade Dollar collection is just a budding set - and not even worth discussing now. I think I have 5 AU coins in that set now - and ti'll be awhil ebefore I'm anywhere near discussing any want list. I do know that if anyone spots an 1878-CC in AU 50-58 - I sure would appreciate you're letting me know about it.

    Mike,

My list of missing coins was to add to the general information on which coins are hard to find. I have a dealer who I work with on my wantlist plus my own efforts. Any wantlist here I would put on the BST but so far I am happy with my current process - although I was pleased to find a coin on the BST recently image

My halves are lower grade AUs than yours - typically 53-55 - although I do have a 1915-P in AU-58. As most of us here working on a set of halves - I wish I had started these sooner when they were more reasonably priced.

Generally strong results for that complete set of halves in raw VG10 to Vf20 on ebay yesterday. What a great original (!!!) group that was. I managed to justify buying the 1893-o and the 1898-s just because they were nice and I didn't have to climb above retail....not sexy dates but not readily available in those grades.

    The timing seems about right...

....and Trade Dollars are Barber Dollars, Dave99B; William Barber was the designer.

I have to admit it - I love the new 1894-O myself - its a tie with my favorite AU 58 in my collection
...and both came from the same source !

    Here's my other favorite:

    Here's a couple BB-ed 05-Ps (Craig Ps coins).

Craig indicates these both were previously in PCGS AU50 holders. What the heck? Nice coins, Craig...

What happened to Craig was my biggest fear of cracking out anything for the Dansco album.

Both of those coins were in PCGS 50 holders - and the third 1905-P was in an XF 40 holder -
wouldn't you know it - the XF 40 was bumped to an XF 45 - and he got two BB's for his trouble.

    Mike,

Glad you like the 94-O. Picked it up raw at the Milwaukee ANA and it has been in two holders, NGC61 and the present PCGS58. I thought it would go higher but not to be and I thought it would be a great coin for your set rather than try another submission or two.

At every show I attend I seek out original Barber coins. While, I tend to focus on halves a bit more I do also pick up nice quarters and dimes as well. The series is just so under appreciated for its true rarity but that's what makes the challenge good too.

I recently picked up an awesome 1898-O quarter that will be going in for grading in a few days. I believe it is a lock 64 with a shot at 65 but the way the TPG's are these days I have no idea what they will say. I guess I will know in a month or three. LOL

Anyway enjoy the 94-O Mike. I have some new purchases I will be posting on the BST in a day or two including some PCGS graded Barbers I picked up over the past couple of months as soon as I image them. Good luck to you all in the hunt.

Nah, it's just two different schools of collecting. VFs and XFs are for rugged men who like dirty, worn surfaces with steely gray patina. AUs are for girly men who like shiny luster and pretty colors. image
