Got this VF30 from Barberman55 at his website Conner Numismatics. Excellent transaction. Dan is A number one to deal with-----but alot of you already know this. Thanks Dan
Here it is Barber Fans. It was the undergraded XF40 in the PCGS holder that came back. I'm going to ask Phil for the images of the other two no grades and try to show them to you as well. Enjoy.
My Registry Set is now complete and Tru-Viewed. I just updated it.
Craig, that's one nice looking 05-P...glad you were able to get it upgraded. CONGRATULATIONS again on completing your set! I figure if I'm lucky, I'll finish mine in the next 5-6 years--provided the coins are available! Good luck in your new assignment.
Well it's been a long time since I bought a Barber Error but this "Spiked Chin" variety 1898-P was one that got away a few years ago and tonight she's coming home!
Former auction description - 1898 10C Barber Dime--Broadstruck--MS64 NGC. The rim is prominently raised and extremely wide at 5 o'clock, the product of an uncentered broadstrike. Pinpoint-sharp design details, unmarked surfaces, and vibrant cartwheel luster confirm the quality. Deep steel-blue patina cedes to copper-gold across the broad lower obverse rim. A "Spiked Chin" variety; a curious die scratch from the chin provides a secondary mint error.

How many times did you have to submit that old XF 40 before it upgraded to an XF 45 ?
I'd also like to see why the old PCGS 50 came back as an Altered Surfaced grade; did the uniform's fabric have a dye that changed the surfaces ? Looking forward to Phil's images as well.
You know I'm more than happy for you - as you worked extremely hard to acheive the end result.
Edited to add:
Congrats to Broadstruck - I knew you'd jump at that 1898 dime. Glad that Elbesaar bowed out arn't you !!
Talk about posting a quick image - and you said the same thing to me too - about this Broadstruck dime - its a super coin - and I did save the image - just in case I was going to bid on it - but how did you get the luster so vibrant ? The images on line were dull and very muted !!
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Very original coin, great strike and has the perfect XF45 look to it. I imagine it is dicounted a bit due to the mark in the field in front of Liberty's face as well as the mark on her cheek. Just a touch too noticeable for me.
So who is going to jump on this? Sure is a bit cheaper then that AU50.

The mark in front of Liberty's face is probably why Harry didn't give it his "A" designation, but rather a B+. I think his price is also reflecting that particular hit. For some reason, I think I've seen this example being offered before.....I kind of remember that hit in front of Liberty's face.
Well I love when the postman rings twice with new goodies, and when a sight-unseen purchase makes your jaw drop. A few weeks ago I searched the forum and found the master thread with a whole bunch of dealer web links some I had never surfed. So last Monday morning I struck upon an item which caught my eye a 1897-S Barber Half vintage Anacs chase white holder in MS61 mentioning it's and all original beauty... but no pics. The dealer wasn't up to snuff as far as scans of digital images but offered a healthy return option. So after a phone call with all my questions answered I had to pull the trigger to see it.
Well it just showed and is just an amazing coin to behold, great strike, light golden with a touch of mottled brown peripheral toning and lustrous original skinned surfaces! Unfortunately it has a bit of rub, just a few whimsy lines, and no major bag marks and may be one of the earliest forms of Market Grading I have seen as this coin looks MS65... well AU65. Anyhow I'm 99.99% confident this will cross into the Pop 1 spot at PCGS as the first AU58!
Pics a bit later as I loaned my camera to my sibling... and it will be crossed in the next month or so.
More Later... yet I won't be getting a lot of work done today!
To Err Is Human.... To Collect Err's Is Just Too Much Darn Tootin Fun!
I am sure if the 97-S makes it into a PCGS AU58 holder you should get first right of refusal if Broadstruck doesn't want it.
I am not surprised the 04-S at HLRC sold. I will probably wish soon that I had bought it rather than blabbing about it. It was not mine, although once upon a time I owned two in that grade. Both were sold some time ago by me on eBay for the ridiculously HIGH prices of about $2200 each!

Broadstruck knows how much I 'd like that coin in a 58 holder; the one I bought raw from JJ Teaparty years ago as an AU 58 - was actually an AU 55, IMHO, but PCGS thought it was an AU 53.
If Broadstruck does decide to sell it, I'm sure he'll offer it to me...
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Broadstruck...you're a cruel person. My heart skipped a beat when I read your post - but - as my PM said - I thought it too good to be true and it is April Fools Day and all - so I'm not too surprised that this was a hoax. You'll pay for this ... we have ways to make you talk !! LOL.
I was just notified that I won a nice 1895-P Half in PCGS 53 - although I already have a pair in AU 58 & AU 55 - plus a raw XF 45 in the Dansco - its a great looking coin and will be posted in my 3rd tier set.
I have agreed to a swap of some of my duplicates for an extemely choice 1893-S Half Dollar in PCGS 58. Thank you - again - and again - and again, Brandon.
Images are too large to post here - but are attached to my Registry Set. Its even nicer than I remembered it.

Here's one that arrived today....care of Dave at Alpine. It's a 1906-O Barber Half, graded by PCGS, AU-53. The coin is mark free, has a nice strike, (for an "O" mintmark Barber), and has fantastic luster, especially for an AU-53. This coin is an upgrade to my PCGS, VF-30 (which is also a very nice coin, and will be up on my website soon).
Dave at Alpine is a great dealer. He used to carry raw barbers at one time, but they always sold fast. He mostly seems to deal in certified coins now, but that may be as much of a function as to what is available as to preference.
Have full confidence buying or selling to Dave Olmstead.
Tombr - The 1886 V Nickel is a key date - and that's a very nice coin. Its been awhile since I graded one - this is what we use to call VF. Plain & simple. What numerical grade would you grade it ?
Well Folks - You may [ or may not ] remember I mentioned that I submitted a group of misc. Barbers for cross over.
Got the grades today:
1916-P Dime - ANACS 58 - now - PCGS MS 62 [ I was hoping for a 58 ] Sorry - no image.
1903-O Quarter - ANACS 58 - now - PCGS 55 [ this coin has a history: per Bushmaster8, from whom I purchased this coin, the coin was originally in a PCGS 58 holder, it was cracked out and placed in an album; subsequently graded by ANACS as an AU 58.]
1897-S Half - NGC 35 - stayed as an NGC 35.
1905-S Half - ANACS 45 - now - PCGS 40
1908-P Half - ANACS 62 - now - PCGS 62 [ I was really hoping for an AU 58 !!! ]
Nice 1886, I love the look of the Liberty Head nickels in the VF grades.
Mike,
Beautiful 93-S, looks like it could be one of the centerpiece's of you're set.
Cary,
As long as you're making them in you're secret laboratory, make an extra one for me with that exact same look. That's one beautiful looking coin......a date that I just can't find in a nice XF/AU grade.
Dr. Pete,
I have to agree with you, after having done business with Dave for a number of years now, he's one of the best out there, and a helluv a nice guy too.
Mike, a beautiful 03-O quarter. You are amazing with all the AU halves you keep finding. What's up? Are you trying to corner the AU Barber half market? LOL
Craig congratulations on your accomplishment of completing your XF45 set. I looked at every show I have attended for the past 3 years and never was able to contribute one coin to your set. And I searched hard and long at every one of them.
I attended a show 3 weeks ago in Minnesota and picked up 8 halves in grade ranging from VG10 - AU53. All but the AU53 coin were raw and some are going in for grading. The AU53 is a very nice looking PCGS AU53 1901-O with a great strike for that mint and year. This was the best show for finding Barber Halves I can remember in a long time.
Tombr - The 1886 V Nickel is a key date - and that's a very nice coin. Its been awhile since I graded one - this is what we use to call VF. Plain & simple. What numerical grade would you grade it ?
Mike----I think it's a touch overgraded. I'm thinking VF20-25?
I just wanted to repeat my offer to all of the Barber fanatics that post on this thread. I will be attending the CSNS Show in Chicago in two weeks. If you have any particular coins/dates/grades on your Wantlists that you'd like me to look for, then please send me a list through Private Message. Make sure you include grade range and price you are willing to pay. I'm doing this on a "first come, first serve" basis and I already have four people I'm helping. For my own sanity I would ask that you please keep your requests to Barber material only (Don, you're the exception) and please don't make blanket requests like "any nice Barbers" or "midgrade Quarters of any date". Try to be a little specific... something like "uncleaned VF or XF Barber Quarters of the following dates: 93-O, 97-S, 03-O, 09-O".
In case you're wondering (or questioning) why I need prices... please understand that I don't profit from hunting other Barber lovers' Wantlists. I love helping other Barberphiles with their collections so I offer my services at no cost to you (some of you have offered a small "finders fee" for certain coins and I will graciously accept those offers, but they are unnecessary). Tyler can vouch for me on this. If I find a coin on your list, you pay exactly what I pay (+ my shipping costs). I need your price info so that I don't overpay for a coin that I don't personally want and then have the person who requested it refuse to pay me what I paid for it... and then I'm stuck with it! Also, please understand that I travel with a finite amount of cash! So if you request an expensive coin (like a 1901-S Quarter in XF), please include your name and cell phone number with your Wantlist. This way I can contact you while I'm at the show to make arrangements for you and the dealer to get in contact with each other.

These images are from another prior auction of the same exact coin, as the pics in tonights sale did not do the coin justice!
I have had these images safed on my hard drive for a few years, since the last sale.
Harry Laibstain just listed a beautiful and original 1904-S half in XF45 PCGS for sale.
It will not stay in stock long at the price being asked.
I pondered buying it myself, but I just made a big purchase.
Congrats to the lucky one who picks this one off.
