Okay - here's my lower graded 1897-O - you should have no problem grading it:
This is an EX: Tyler Child coin.
BTW, I grade Tom's coin VF 25 - although I know the true grade; and Cary's coin a VF 35 - although it could just as easily be an XF 40 - but I really like it for a 35.
____________________________________________
Cary, that 1904-S in VF 25 is a joke. Its been "processed" to put it poitely.
Here's the 1904-S I picked up in an ANACS 20 holder two and a half years ago:
This coin now resides in a PCGS VF 25 holder.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
I have been informed that the owner of the 04-S on Teletrade is a board member here. I've already PMed this person but felt I should post this here as well.
Please understand that I am NOT trying to belittle either the coin or its owner. I am simply using it as another example of why I don't like TPGs. While I personally will not be a bidder on this coin, the fact that it is in a PCGS VF25 slab means that it WILL turn a very nice profit for its owner (thanks to the Registry Set game). After all, it IS the key date in the series.
Here's an original beauty I recently picked up......care of board member, Dennis (Dogwood). The 1907-S Barber half resides in a PCGS holder and grades XF-45.
Dan missed out on some of my first BST lots, and since he had just allowed me to adopt his swell 1913-s Quarter ( imaged earlier in this thread better than I seem to be capable of) I thought I'd show him another box of puppies before bringing them to market. That 07-s was my favorite. Just glad stuff found good appreciative homes.
When it rains, it pours, cus here's the missing link for my BQ set, another reason I was stupid enought to part with that bunch of BH.
This 01-s Quarter is sitting in an ANACS VG8 Details Cleaned holder (although it looks unharmed and fairly rustic to me) and I BIN'd it for G4 money. Probably a crackout for the Dansco, which look so "complete" when they're complete. (Not cracking the 13-s )
I went back into the archives to a thread about how dumb it is that these are so expensive even as they are available in the lowest grades and I tend to agree. Never thought I'd own one with any detail but always knew I'd have to bite the bullet in the name of the quest. I'm pleased.
We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.
Glory be on that 1907s dogwood --> Barberman exchange. I don't think I'll sleep tonight! Barber ON!
Do your best to avoid circular arguments, as it will help you reason better, because better reasoning is often a result of avoiding circular arguments.
Anytime you can find a nice original (what appears to be close to a VF grade), 07-S Barber half, you have to be a happy camper. How about an image of the reverse?
Thanks for all the kind words regarding my latest addition.....if only I can find the 96-S, 97-O, and 04-S with the same look----fat chance of that!
Thanks all. I'll admit it's not luck, I've been reading your threads, and TomB's article on his website, and trying to apply what I've learned. Here's a few more from last weekend's show:
A 93O
And a 94P - I already had one in VF+, but figured a second coin of this date in a lower grade wouldn't hurt:
This is fun. I get to post this in the "Copper for the weekend" thread also. HK-12/Julian CM-39. 1869 Pacific Railway Completion. Designed by W. Barber. 45 mm.
Is anyone here going to Chicago for the CSNS Show in April? I will be there on that Wednesday and Thursday. If you're NOT going to be there, but you'd like me to look for something on your want list, send me a PM.
I'm still wondering what happened to that VF 35 you were bidding on Cary.
Noone has posted it on any of the Registry sets either here or accross the street.
You'll locate one...
I was outbid on the 95-S that Ken just auctioned off in AU 58. I should have bid some ridiculous amount to secure it. Oddly enough the 1896-P in AU 58 sold for $54.00 more than the 95-S in AU 58. Go figure.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Nice, nice coins Walkerguy, nothing to be ashamed of there! All those from one show? I have been to about 6 or 7 shows in 3 years looking just for midgrade Barber halves, and haven't seen many more than that! Where is this Shangri-La?
Dennis, sweet 95s! I am still enjoying the coin you ebaY'ed last year. The kids didn't miss their Christmas presents too much.
You know Barberman55 is now a dealer of coins, and apparently still a collector as well, which they say is a DANGEROUS position to be in. I can help you avoid any future harm to Dan
tombr, glad you are happy with the 97o!

Dan..."Who's The Man ? "... You know where to send those circulated cameo halves !!!
Yes, everyone, Dan is falling into the trap of collecting what he's selling. I can't blame him either. If I were to become a 'vest pocket dealer' , I might be too tempted to keep things which were required for my collection. IE: 1897-S Half AU 58 ... where are they anyway ??? PCGS population in 58 = " 0 " . Have just checked accross the street as to their POP's. AU 58 = 2; MS-62 = 5 / you know what'll happen to these MS 62's if someone attempts to cross them at PCGS ...
Looks like most of Irv Reichel's halves are now imaged at Heritage.
Yes, there are a couple of things I'm interested in. My "nemisis" coin the 1901-S half, is listed in PCGS AU 55. I copied its image onto "My Pictures" but its too large to post because I still have not taken the time to learn how to resize images. My good friend Dave99B has been my "computer guru" for awhile now in resizing oversized images. Thanks again, Dave !! He gets to see any of my NEWPS first .
Irv's also got a 1904-S in PCGS AU 58 too. You know I'm more than interested in what that "baby" sells for.
Also listed is a very choice MS 64 - 1896-O - which I believe came from HLRC. Sweet coin !!! "Too Rich For My Blood" though.
He should do well on his collection, it contains many nice MS collector grade coins. No "Mega" grades - just nice mid range MS material.
Good Luck Irv !! { PS: Arn't you glad that I didn't buy your 1896-S ??? Glad you received better compensation than what eBay was providing !!! }
I have the day after Easter off - and I get to visit my old friends at the Safety Deposit Boxes. Its been too long inbetween visits. I should spend a couple of hours there - but they get a tad upset at the bank when I'm in there more than half an hour. My personal collection has actually been downsized drastically over the past year. My type set consisting of keys and semi-keys, mostly sold, the big 3 Barber quarters, gone, and a host of other super nice coins.
For my own sanity, I still need a hobby and something to keep me out of trouble, hence, the continuation of my Barber half set that I've been working on for 4-5 years now. About 10 months ago, Seated dollars looked like a good area to get into so I started working on a set of Seated dollars.....in addition to specializing and dealing in them too.
Like any dealer, who collects a little on the side for their own enjoyment, eventually everything becomes available for sale. In the mean time, I'll enjoy working on both the Barber half and Seated dollar sets, with an eye on selling them in the future (maybe sooner than later). For now, I'll consider them my "new" 401K plan.

Here's another that I picked up at the same show, I even took a reverse pic, since it's a little better grade. There is some luster on both sides near the rim, but neither the detail or the luster turned out well in the pics. Regrettably, I did have to pay > XF Bid for it though.

No posts in awhile (about 24 hours), so I thought I'd revive this thread with a humble purchase I made tonight. This is somewhere between F12 and VF20. Will know when I get it in hand. I'd prefer a higher grade, but I like dark coins and managed to get this for $22.50.
So I'm paging through the Hugon collection catalog for the last few nights, and also I own the Dr. Thaine Price and David Queller catalogs. I wondering if there's any other Auction Catalogs for Barber Halves that are as well layed out as John Hugon's with info and pictures

That's an interesting question, I was just reading a brochure that Heritage will create custom catalogs with write ups for people of a certain standing with them. I guess there is no fee for the photography and a nominal fee for the write ups and printed catalog. This is for personal collection not being sold. It would be a great way to share a prestigious collection with others.

It would be a great way to share a prestigious collection with others.
