Thanks, Don. Your set is legend. I've got a few SEVENS to upgrade, but you can suspect which ones they are. Impossilble to find except for 10-20 x book price as BIN on eBay. I bit the bullet on Pierce and Rice, but those obscure cards are tough. Redlegs Team Card, yeah right.

I've got one of those huge 5" diameter magnifier and a strong verilux light and I'll be darned if I can find anything wrong with this card. I know that Gem 10s are not given out often but the centering is 54-46 top to bottom and 50-50 side to side. The back is centered perfectly with no issues whatsoever. There is not a single touch on any corner and no print marks or any flaws, front or back. I don't know what else this card could have other than a grader who would not be hesitant to give any card a 10, no matter how pristine. I know that everyone thinks their cards are special, but can you see anything wrong with this card? I realize that you only have the scan, but this is the best looking card I've ever had my hands on.
From PSA: A PSA Gem Mint 10 card is a virtually perfect card. Attributes include four perfectly sharp corners, sharp focus and full original gloss. A PSA Gem Mint 10 card must be free of staining of any kind, but an allowance may be made for a slight printing imperfection, if it doesn't impair the overall appeal of the card. The image must be centered on the card within a tolerance not to exceed approximately 55/45 to 60/40 percent on the front, and 75/25 percent on the reverse.
Oh, well. I guess I should be thankful it didn't come back a SEVEN.

Maybe the Gilliam deserves a shot at a 'review'. That way at a minimum, it stays in a 9 holder, but with a chance to bump to 10. No downside to a review since you are not cracking the card out of the holder.

I just returned home last night from attending the National in Baltimore. I thought the show was excellent and there was a lot to see there. I spent Tuesday through Friday in Balto. I think the dealers did very well and there were a lot of collectors in attendance. I thought all that was a great sign for the hobby. Good stuff!
One of my goals at the National was to find as many 1959 Topps #416 Haywood Sullivan cards as I could to do some personal research on the availability of the three variations. I thought this would give me a much better idea as to the rarity of any one of the variations, if nothing more than for my personal knowledge. I was at the show three days so I had plenty of time to search out Sullivan cards in showcases, binders, etc. I looked at all the dealer tables that had 1959's. Of course, since Sullivan is a common card, many times there were numerous copies of the card raw in binders laying on the tables. I did not care about the condition of the cards that I looked at, I just wanted to see as many Sullivan cards as I could so I could take note of what I found. It was very interesting and here are my findings just from this National. Of course, there is nothing scientific about this little study, but I think it does provide some guidance on the availability of the three variations.

Thanks for the info. on Sullivan. They must have stopped to dot near the end of the print run. I just received a submission back from psa. very quick turnaround. all of the 59s were 7s and I cracked them out. the others were some low pops and nice cards from some other sets. I dont know how to transfer them to this board , but the submission # is 5011408 and the order 3 is20425079, received 8-2 and shipped 8-5 .......now thaat is fast.....

there sure is some validity without a doubt!I guess us guys that own one can consider ourselves very lucky.I am more than thrilled to own my 4.5. I hope you had fun at the show.I have gone to 4 2 in Cleveland one in Chicago and St Louis.I am off work again as my back went out of wack. Going to have a spinal fusion on the 16th.Have only worked 2 months since January 1st.This has not been a good year for me first the shoulders now the back.Thats enough!!!! I did manage to pick up some nice 59s low#s & Highs plus a few stars on the net.Will show them as I recieve them.
I've completed the set and have about 50% in 7s. I just need to get the raminder of my raw cards graded and upgrade anything below a 7. Here are my latest results. A lot more 6s then I wanted but a few 9s. Part of the fun of grading!!

Anyone get anything on the prewar card auction last week on e bay. 15th rated set. beautiful cards...Did any of you win the infield power card. It was the best centered I have ever seen, but was just out of my reach. Most of the cards were super centered 8s.
Infield power is a tougie without a doubt and when founf in an 8 it will be costly.I have upgraded 70 59s to 8s however still feelling efects from my surgery I will show some when I feel better.
I followed the prewarcard collector 1959 Topps PSA set auction. The Infield Power card sold for $390.96. Many of the other high Dollar cards also sold for about 10%-20% lower than in the past. A little over a year ago Steve Novella in Maine had a similiar auction of most of the 1959 Topps Set. In that Auction the Infield Power Card in PSA 8 sold for $765.00. In comparing prices from the two auctions Koufax in past sold for $709 vs 552, Gibson 954 vs 821, Aaron 585 vs 387, and some low pop commons fell; Schmidt 166 vs 56, Odell 567 vs 407. Some low pops in the recent auction sold for more than the Novella Auction.
I won Yost and Charley Maxwell but both were costly to me...138.00 for Yost and about 90.00 for Maxwell. Both were centered pretty well, and better than the ones I have. I did not realize most were down from the Novella auction. As tje pops change the prices change .There is a Pierce all star on the bay now. It will be interesting to see how it goes. ALso , It will be interesting to see how many of the Sullivans are re-holdered and which version will have the most submissions. I am with fiveniner. I think there are many less no circle and no dot.
The Billy Pierce All Star Card PSA 8 sold on Ebay for $1504. Granted this listed example although NQ, was a little OC, a PSA 8 Pierce ALL Star card sold a few years ago for $3608. I have seen a trend where many of the prices of the Low Pop cards in PSA 8 in this set are down 30-40% from late 2008, early 2009. I think I will continue to collect the higher pop 8's and 9's and wait for the Low Pop cards to continue to decline and pick them up in the near future.

I agree. I have all 8s except for about 20 low pop 7s, and 1 6. I will buy 8s if the prices come down. Otherwise I'll live with the 7s.
It seems most graded 59s have been hovering at the same price for some time now. I think they've bottomed out, especially commons and minor stars. They'll go up if buyers swoop in on perceived bargains. Just as its a good market for 1st time home buyers, its good for new collectors.

I think you are right Kid I have been able to purchase and upgrade my 59 Master set for prices that you would not be close to a year or so ago.My original Goal was to hit 7.00 overall grade however in the last 2 months or so I have reached almost 7.4.The Star cards have basically held there own in most cases however the tough low pops have been coming down along with the Hi#s.It appears that the 5th and 6th series cards are flooding the auctions and prices for 8s are at $20 or less on a good portion of them.I have a feeling that someome, somwhere must have had a boatload of these unopened somewhere stored away.Could have come from an Old Ma & Pa store which where all over the place where I was growing up.Collecting sort of waned in August when these cards were released because of folks going on vacation before kids started school and then the 7th series were only found only in certain busier store where turnover was better or inventory control was better.MAKE ANY SENSE??
Absolutely it makes sense, fiveniner. Glad to hear of your recent upgrades. At one point, I was 8th on the 59 basic registry, sold much of it at the end of the boom, less as prices went down with increasing pops. I'm still selling selected items as well as hunting bargains on ebay.

I just don't have the finances to chase down all of the cards, but I enjoy the set enough to at the very least complete the run of HOF players. I'm about halfway there, with all of mine being in 7, so I would have no chance at being near the top, but at least it will be a nice showcase for some of the nicest HOF cards out there. I personally think that the Stan Musial and Ernie Banks cards are the nicest of all their Topps cards, and that Roberto Clemente is right there with the 1963.

hey all my 59's are psa 6 or less so....yeah i like the cheaper cards because i can get more of them...i have a tiny card budget.
The 1959 HOF set is now online. I'll try and finish it over the next year or so with 7's or better. Just curious... maybe it is one of you here... why register a set and then immediately retire it?

I just returned home last night from attending the National in Baltimore. I thought the show was excellent and there was a lot to see there. I spent Tuesday through Friday in Balto. I think the dealers did very well and there were a lot of collectors in attendance. I thought all that was a great sign for the hobby. Good stuff!
One of my goals at the National was to find as many 1959 Topps #416 Haywood Sullivan cards as I could to do some personal research on the availability of the three variations. I thought this would give me a much better idea as to the rarity of any one of the variations, if nothing more than for my personal knowledge. I was at the show three days so I had plenty of time to search out Sullivan cards in showcases, binders, etc. I looked at all the dealer tables that had 1959's. Of course, since Sullivan is a common card, many times there were numerous copies of the card raw in binders laying on the tables. I did not care about the condition of the cards that I looked at, I just wanted to see as many Sullivan cards as I could so I could take note of what I found. It was very interesting and here are my findings just from this National. Of course, there is nothing scientific about this little study, but I think it does provide some guidance on the availability of the three variations.

I personally think that this speaks volumes about the difficulty of the No Circle Copyright, U.S.A (no period) variation of the card. I could not find a single card with this variation and I was even looking in binders where the cards were VG-EX condition at best.
You can take this however you like, but I do think that my little experiment has some validity.

there sure is some validity without a doubt!I guess us guys that own one can consider ourselves very lucky.I am more than thrilled to own my 4.5.
I hope you had fun at the show.I have gone to 4 2 in Cleveland one in Chicago and St Louis.I am off work again as my back went out of wack. Going to have a spinal fusion on the 16th.Have only worked 2 months since January 1st.This has not been a good year for me first the shoulders now the back.Thats enough!!!!
I did manage to pick up some nice 59s low#s & Highs plus a few stars on the net.Will show them as I recieve them.

I think I will continue to collect the higher pop 8's and 9's and wait for the Low Pop cards to continue to decline and pick them up in the near future. >>
I agree. I have all 8s except for about 20 low pop 7s, and 1 6. I will buy 8s if the prices come down. Otherwise I'll live with the 7s.

I think you are right Kid I have been able to purchase and upgrade my 59 Master set for prices that you would not be close to a year or so ago.My original Goal was to hit 7.00 overall grade however in the last 2 months or so I have reached almost 7.4.The Star cards have basically held there own in most cases however the tough low pops have been coming down along with the Hi#s.It appears that the 5th and 6th series cards are flooding the auctions and prices for 8s are at $20 or less on a good portion of them.I have a feeling that someome, somwhere must have had a boatload of these unopened somewhere stored away.Could have come from an Old Ma & Pa store which where all over the place where I was growing up.Collecting sort of waned in August when these cards were released because of folks going on vacation before kids started school and then the 7th series were only found only in certain busier store where turnover was better or inventory control was better.MAKE ANY SENSE??

hey all my 59's are psa 6 or less so....yeah i like the cheaper cards because i can get more of them...i have a tiny card budget.
looking for low grade t205's psa 1-2
