Welcome 1959!! Glad you are here. You have a wonderful set on the registry.

Steve, as Tony said, to get the Sullivans you already have in holders changed, you do have to submit on Reholder service with the note about Add Variety. Also, what I did on each card I sent was below the card I listed the exact variation very plainly to make sure they did not make a mistake. For the service by Reholder, I put Reholder and Relabel.

Fiveniner, I have all three variations of the sullivan. The no dot does exist......All have been graded , will have to be reholded. I think the " no dot after the a" is like the 58 Herrera. the plate just ran out of ink or something. I wonder at what point in the printing did the Inking or circle appear or disappear.....They did not bother to correct Terwilliger yet discovered this error and added a circle and dot????

I have the 59 Sullivan, no circle copyrite, no period after A. This one is PSA 8. I've been selling my 59s for about two years now and am wondering what might be a fair price.

I should add that the Sullivan was graded at least 10 years ago and hasn't been reholdered, but there's no mistake it's the elusive variation.

kidsox, no one really knows because it is hard to tell about the scarcity. The Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards shows it to be about twice the value of the other two variations.

Thanks, Mariner. It will be interesting to see how this shakes down. I'm sending it in to reslab today.

I went to the Fort Washington, PA. show yesterday and found all three versions of the #416 Sullivan variations. I already have a PSA 8 of the first(standard) version so I only purchased(Raw) the no circle copyright with the period after the"A", and the no circle copyright without the period after the "A". Both cards are PSA 8 quality, except for possibly the centering. Don, I found these without looking at many cards, so I'm not sure if your search will be that difficult(maybe I just got lucky). I will submit these for grading in the next month or two depending on what specials are running, and I'll report back the grades.

I am very glad for your find.I have emailed so many dealers even sports lot and no one could help me with the no period variation.Maybe I will have to break down and take in a Gibralter show which has lost much of its luster IMO have only been there twice in the last 5 years.I am gonna give them a try.I know it will be raw as long as I feel I can get at least an 8 on it and hope it comes back at least a 7.

    Only card I need

Just ordered a 59 no Period raw hope to get it soon hope it turns in to be at least a 6 or 7 at this point.went through about 25 sellers before I found this online non ebay from a seller I used to buy sets from about 4 years ago Deans Cards. Was always pleased with his product.Grades at EXMT but could possibly grade nrmt.I will be satisfied either way.

That would finish the set .I still need to relabel no circle C variation.

Out of nothing but idle curiosity, and the fact that I don't know...what's the breakdown on the backs/card stock for '59's? I've seen plenty that have the whiter back (like the Sullivan above), but I've also seen grays. Does that vary by series or is it more random?
  • Options
    kidsoxkidsox Posts: 120 ✭✭
Numbers 199-286 have either gray or white backs. I've heard on this forum that gray is less common, but having collected 59s for many years, they seem about equal. Maybe somebody knows why there are two types, whether one was printed first or they were both printed together. It's just one more peculiarity about this set. Set Registry doesn't distinguish between them.
  • Options
    GDM67GDM67 Posts: 2,523 ✭✭✭✭
    Okay, thanks.

I've expressed it before, but I really prefer the whiter stock of the '63-'70 sets compared to the grays that came before and after.

PSA grades received for the #416 Sullivan variations: No circle copyright U.S.A. PSA 7 & No circle copyright U.S.A(no dot) PSA 7 . I am completing a PSA Registered set for 1959 Topps, but not a Master Set and I would entertain offers(not sure of the value yet, especially the "no dot" card. Please contact me if you have any interest.

I finally published my 1959 Topps Baseball set, and it ranks as the Lucky #13 set. I'm not sure why photos aren't showing up, but I'll work on it. I'm happy with the ranking as a large portion of the cards were purchased raw(getting very difficult to find nice raw cards) and submitted for grading.

Congrats I am one card away on my master set looking only for Sullivan without period.I am waiting for a response from an old dealer I use to buy from at shows. He has one raw in gd/vg shape hopefully he gets back to me today.
I have really no clue on a proper offer for the card.

However enjoy your set and good luck.

Congrats, Tom! I will check it out.

Tony, congrats on finding the Sullivan without the period. The scan you sent to me looks very good! Good luck in your submission on the grade. I am thinking it is about a 5, maybe a 6.

Here is what my Master Set for the Sullivan looks like as of tonight!

    0101002905 416 HAYWOOD SULLIVAN NO CIRCLE COPYRIGHT,U.S.A 7 2 1
    0101002906 416 HAYWOOD SULLIVAN NO CIRCLE COPYRIGHT,U.S.A. 9 0 0
    0101002907 416 HAYWOOD SULLIVAN CIRCLE COPYRIGHT,U.S.A. 9 5 0

A sub of mine popped this afternoon and the last card on it was a PSA 9 Sullivan, No Circle Copyright, U.S.A. Woohoo! I bought it raw off of eBay back in February.

    GREAT JOB DON!!!!

I am sending my no circle with period in for relabeling it grades PSA 8 along with the no period after the A as soon as I recieve it.Can not wait.Honestly whatever it grades my guess its a 3 I will be more than happy for now. Also looking to upgrade my Hanebrink WITH TRADE OPTION it is an 8 OC now. That will leave me 5 psa 9 with qualifiers which I am very pleased with which includes the tough Philly team card.

Wow what beauty!!!! HURRAY I finally finished my 59 Master Set also with the addition of my Sullivan without the period after U.S.A and the relabling of No circle copyright U.S.A.I think that makes only 4 complete Master sets.OMG!!!!The relableded is an 8 the no period is only a 4.5 but still a nice looking card .I will show scan when recieved from PSA.

I am back to work now and only have brief time to go on the forum these days but I will pop in when I can.
Don thanks for youre incouragement when I thought finding thr card was going to be a lost cause.

As you know, it's tough. Some of those 1.0 weighted commons are almost impossible to find except at prices 10x or more SMRP. Some you can't find at any price.
