I thought that I would add a new addition to my 1959 Topps collection here. This is a piece that I have not had before, but thanks to JustAl.....Alex Romashko here on CU, he sold me one of his to help me with another piece to complete my 1959 collection. Thank you, Alex.

Don these cards are sweet I am not to sure about Musial but I am going to say 8 and the Corsair trio 8.5/9.
I am just of few upgrades from getting my set at 7.0 which is my goal picked up several nice 8s lately.Ranking at 11 current.

I never was really crazy aout the overall design of this set, but the last two pictures are beautiful cards of Whitey and Vern. Thanks for th pictures, the '59 set just bumped up on my favorite set rankings.

Hey 1959 guys, I just saw the all PSA 7 set sell in Madecs auction at a little over 17.5K. Do you think the seller made money on this set? I am just wondering if putting 50s sets together in PSA 7 shape can be a non losing proposition.

It is hard to say if the seller made any money or not. If you put a PSA 7 set together, the cards will still have great eye appeal and it can be done at a fraction of the cost of an 8 set. You may not make a lot of money on it eventually but it will not cost you a lot either. In the meantime, it is a low cost way of enjoying collecting a fantastic set.

I guess I thought the number was pretty high for an all 7 set. Also 17K seems like alot of money to build a set on but I never keep track of what I spend.

$17K is well over SMR in 7. I'm finding it hard to believe you couldn't put that set together in 7 for 80% of SMR or less.

That is what I was thinking. I just thought based on that one sale in an auction (yeah we know how legit some of these sales are) it might show building a PSA 7 set in 1959 wouldn't be a money loser.

I am really excited about getting my 59 master set past the 7 mark.I am now trying to rid myself of my PSA 6s and any card with a qualifier except for a few That are 9 with qualifiers or just too tough to find and too costly .I am having one heck of a time finding a Billy Monbouquette in a 7 or8 and Jackie Jensen.I have purchased some nice stuff latley which I will show when I get some time to down load.Found and purchased a very tough Don Bessent in a 8 that I rarely see on the webb its replacing my 8OC.It did cost me however.Still looking for a Spahn Born 1931 clear 3.My present one is a PSA 3 just to fill the set.Right now I have 2 cards listed lower than a 6 Lumenti no option in a 5 and the Spahn. This set is my passion.
I would add that the set would possibly run 14 to 15,000 in an auction in PSA 7.IMO.

That's a tough 7 for the Aaron. Most of the 7's I see for it are nice cards that are off center (generally with a wide right hand border.) That looks like a 7.5, at least.

    paleo....

good job on that Musial and Corsair Trio.....they look great in those 8 holders!

    Tony....

It is great to see that you have so much passion for the '59 set. That Spahn is a tough one and also one of the last ones that I had to find to complete my Master Set. You sound like you are having a lot of fun with your set. That is what collecting is all about.

    Spahnfan....

All I can say is WoW! What beautiful cards and these are from your last submission? Congrats! Since you only need 20% to complete, do you have your set on the registry? I would love to look at it.

BTW, on a separate note, I just received back my 1959 Topps Mantle which I sent in to have reviewed. It was a PSA 8 which I acquired several years ago. Here are the results of the PSA review.

    image

I am happy with it being in a PSA 8.5 holder. I also had my 1959 PSA 8.5 Del Rice card reviewed for a possible PSA 9, but it stayed in the 8.5 holder.

Mariner and Hank, thank you for the comments. My set is #22 under the name of Starfire's 1969 set. I am up to 90% now. I do not have any pictures up yet. One of these days I will get that done. Part of my problem in getting the set done is that I like nice centering. I am trying to get the set completed with centering no worse than the Herb Score card shown. I could have submitted or bought cards to finish the set, but the centering was not to my liking. I am sure there are some of you that are doing the same thing with your sets and are finding the going slow also.

Mariner, that is a very, very nice Mantle. image If I could have found a good picture of a drool, I would have inserted that here.

I don't know if you remember, but we did have some conversations about this set back in 2001 or 2002. I appreciated your comments and help back then and still enjoy what you have to say now as well.
