Very insightful comments as usual....you add a lot of substance to the thread.
Dan.....
There is no question that there are a lot of 8's and 9's to be had on ebay recently. Dealers and other collectors are very aware that high grade 1959 Topps baseball is hot and they are trying to take advantage of the hot market right now. There are many more tough cards offered these days than ever before.
ArnyVee....
Thank you! How about some more eye-candy??.....recent cards added to my set.

Wow...so much for "book" pricing...a bought about 10-20 of those cards...I didn't bid on the last batch...didn't like the centering...
And as to the earlier question...yes the centering on the Moon card was perfect and worth every penny...I have around 1/2 the set completed now...and all of the cards so far look just like the Moon card!!

Just got this beauty back in the mail from PSA today. I am working on my '59 Master Set in all 8's and 9's. I now have four of the five No Option/No Trade cards in PSA 8 with the Hanebrink in a PSA 7. The Hanebrink will be tough to find in an 8. Pop shows 1 and it sold on ebay recently for $2 grand.

I have 4 59 Topps PSA 9s and 3 PSA 8s ending on ebay tonight. You can view all of my auction via the link in my profile below. Prices for most of the 9s are still super low (and they are all low pop cards!): $90, $70, $60, etc. I also have a gorgeous Cubs Clubbers Ernie Banks at auction. The horizontals are super tough to find centered like this one. I don;t think you can find a nicer example.

So I sent in my first submission to PSA - 50 1959's. I did so after closely examining the 200+ PSA 8 '59's I've purchased. I have to say I'm a bit disappointed in the results. I used a loop and really thought I had a grip on what was what, but I was pretty off-base. The only good news is that my Bob Friend All Star came back as an 8, as I expected it to. Oh well...
While I'm here, can anyone help me understand what's the driver behind this ? Best I can tell this should be about a $20 card in PSA 8. Am I missing something?

Four Pendletons have sold in the past year, with an average selling price of about $21. Will you be selling any of your 59s in PSA 8?

It's real simple...two individuals wanted the card...bid stupidly high to make sure that they won the card...and the winnner paid the price...in more than one way...
It takes two bidders to make this happen...but it happens over and over again...

That Pendleton card continues to climb higher - one of the two bidders rebid today to push it to $281, so it seems at least one of them is conciously making the decision to support this card at over $275. Crazy...especially considering there's another PSA 8 Pendleton ending tomorrow and that's currently at $24 (granted, the one today looks nicer, but still...).
Mark, I'm keeping the 8's that came back. I do have a few duplicates that are available for sale (or trade) though. Unfortunately I don't own a scanner but if you (or anyone) is interested I can try my digital camera. The duplicates are:
Dan, it takes time and several subs to get the hang of what PSA looks for in a card.
That Pendleton is ugly. Henri summed it up nicely.....it just takes two bidders who want it bad enough.....hopefully one of them is not being taken by a shill bidder.

We have a new collector on board on CU....mcross......welcome!! It is always great to see new faces collecting the fantastic 1959 Topps baseball set. In mcross' other thread on '59's, he mentioned that we should refresh this thread and get going again on talking 1959 Topps baseball. I agree and here it is!! Hopefully more will jump in and keep this going for awhile again. Let't see some scans of recent pickups.

Don, Glad you got the 59 thread started again....The 59's remain popular with registry collectors and there have been some big changes in the registry since July................John McLaren decided to retire his No 1 set,it took him 18 years to build it and it was remarkable.Don't know if anyone will be able to attain the level he reached. If memory serves,he finished up at 8.84 or something close to that. There have been quite a few new folks list their sets on the registry and many of the top sets are upgrading with a vengence......I may be mistaken, but it seems that the 59's have the most action of any of the pre 1960 Topps sets on the registry. Common 8's are very reasonable now,but the lower pop cards are still going for a high premium. The first 90% of the set is fairly reasonable to put together, but that final 10% takes a fairly serious financial commitment. Someone on another thread was asking about the Spahn variation cards..........I think the 31-obscured version has already been covered.I just picked up the Born in 31 version and had to pay $667 for a PSA 8.I have seen that card range fron $460 to over $1100 on Ebay and it hardly ever comes up.I've had to wait almost three years to get one .....it is defininately the toughest one to get. Again Don,thanks for reviving the thread and thanks for your insight over the years on our favorite set.
I'm so glad the '59 thread got going again.. Thanks to Don and welcome mcross! I'll contribute by sharing a cello pack rip that I enjoyed in August '07. I couldn't resist the urge and had to rip that sucker right after I received it. I had high hopes of pulling a gem mint Ernie Banks from this series. Ah well, no such luck. However, I did get a little excited when underneath the top card pops out Richie Ashburn. That one is a very tough card as I'm sure that Don and Steve can confirm. Unfortunately, I think it will be a 7 due to the slight oc s/s. I do think several others are mint. 7 of these were sent to PSA (logged 11/14) in a vintage bulk sub and I am waiting for poppage any day now.
Its nice to see this thread come back to life.Still working on my 59 just upgrading. The set is not only my favorite hands down it also brings back memories of mine going to the corner store with a nickel and buying and cracking open the packs always looking for Detroit Tiger cards.I will never forget one particular time when I opened a pack in mid summer and out came Charlie Maxwell. The card was a blazing red color which seemed to fit Old Paw Paw just right.Up to then I never got so excited opening a pack.
I love this thread! Thanks for the welcomes. Don, I had to put on my shades to view that Cash beauty. Kurtman9, thanks for sharing that pack bust with us. What a thrill that must have been. Great looking cards. Please let us know when you get poppage. We need more pictures!!!!!!! I could look at high grade 1959 Topps pictures all day long.
I will post a couple of scans to try to keep a card related thread from being buried by all the threads on the .5 point grading system started by PSA.
Here goes.....this is several of a number of 1959's that I may be putting on ebay later this week, but they are gorgeous and worthy of being shown on this thread:

Here's a couple of '59s I picked-up over the holidays in my annual visit to my favorite shop. They'll be on their way to PSA before the end of the month. I'd appreciate any predictions on their grades by the experts on this thread. Thanks!
Nice looking cards good luck on your subs.I must tell you though that I am just a bit skeptical on the Musial it appears it might be miscut or trimmed but it could be just the scan or my eyes or both.Cosair Trio should be a 7 or 8 .
Hopefully you all don't mind......I am going to put a little spam here since many on this thread have a strong interest in 1959's.....I just listed 17 auctions tonight of absolutely incredible 1959 Topps PSA 8's on ebay. Please check them out. Low starting bid at 59 cents.
Wow ! That was a hefty price to pay for the Shantz!!! Good luck on the Pierce.
My wife wants me to sell my set considering the appreciation over the past few years. But I may play the bump game on the 8's and see where pricing goes.
I think McClaren was right selling his 9's now since I see the action in the 8.5's going forward and the 9's stay the same or come down to sane pricing.
I have a fear that this 8.5 mid grade is going to cause a lot of "collectors" to drop out since prices for the 8.5's will move significantly higher and straight 8's (especially in plentiful pops or slightly OC) will drop. A shame for the hobby we have loved for a long time. I hope I am wrong, but I saw the same things happen in coins with the MS mid grading addition years ago.

You may be right on the 8s going down and 8.5s going up--makes it essential to resubmit.
While it seems like a lot to pay for the Shantz, it is less than the past few transactions on VCP and it looked like a strong 8 to me.
