Don't know if you all saw the thread ("Not too bad") by Reggie1 on this board a couple of days ago - in the same sub with (2) PSA 8 62 Landrum's he also pulled an 8 on the 63 Triandos. Quite a submission!
Kurt....those are some sweet grades....you have some outstanding cards there.....the Amaro is a real tough card as you know. I love the Clete Boyer. WOW!!

Kurt you definetly have some sweet stuff there. The Amaro,Boyer are tough as nails in 8 and the Killebrew in no easy card either as so many are off centered.
I have the #40 Spahn with the 1931 obscured 3 in a PSA 8 - I bought this card at a card shop several years ago (about $20 I think) and sent it in about a year ago to PSA. I had no idea about the variation as I had not done my homework on 59's. Also I just sent in #336 Billy Loes in Dec. on the special but no grades yet - problem is again I was not smart enough to know to look for a variation - card was nice and I felt it had a shot at an 8 but I miss pretty regularly so it may come back a 7 unless I really screwed up. I am not a set builder of 59's but I do like the cards. Anyone know about what these cards would sell for? I am not really considering selling them - just curious. Thanks - - - Rick
"I CAN'T COMPLAIN BUT SOMETIMES I STILL DO" - SMOKY JOE WALSH - - - Always looking for 53 Topps Baseball and "stuff"
There are three Spahn variations. The one you have would probably sell for about $400. There is also the Born in 1921 variation and the Born in 1931 variation. This last one is the one that I am having a great deal of difficulty finding.
On the Loes card, there is the common one with the Trade Statement on the back. It is easy and in an 8 would sell for about $30. The rare variation is the card without the trade statement on the back. An 8 in that card would go for about $500.
There are five cards total that have the No Trade or No Option variations. The Hanebrink card without the statement on the back is the most difficult.
Hope this answers your questions. Good luck in your collecting!

For those interested, I have a few really nice 1959's ending on ebay Sunday night. The cards include some high numbers and a couple of more difficult cards.....Hanebrink with Trade Statement and Mickey Vernon.
"During the 1962 season, New York Mets centerfielder Richie Ashburn and Venezuelan shortstop Elio Chacón found themselves colliding in the outfield. When Ashburn went for a catch, he would scream, "I got it! I got it!" only to run into the 160-pound Chacón, who spoke only Spanish. Ashburn learned to yell, "¡Yo la tengo! ¡Yo la tengo!" which is "I've got it" in Spanish. In a later game, Ashburn happily saw Chacón backing off. He relaxed, positioned himself to catch the ball, and was instead run over by 200-pound leftfielder Frank Thomas, who understood no Spanish."
According to Jon Miller's version, Thomas walks up to Ashburn after the game, looks at him quizzically and says "Richie...what's a 'yellow tiger?'"
Ron, each unto his own. That is why collecting is so great. I know many who love the '59 set....it is their #1 as well as mine, but there are those who much prefer other sets.

It has it's own weird charm. I prefer more photo space, but the bright colors and the general sportiness of the cards go a long way. It's also mentioned by a lot of collectors that Topps upped the production numbers in subsequent years, which adds to the challenge of collecting this one.
I can say that when its time to liquidate my collection which will be in the future so I can retire the 59 which was my first set as a kid and my 78 which was my late sons set will not be included.
Besides my nostalgic reasons the 59 set was the most colorful set with crisp picture in most cases with an exception few airbrused ones. The backs were great except I did prefer the cream colored back to the grey backs, especially now that my eyes do not focus as well.
I've been lazily putting together a half decent '59 set, in 6/7 raw condition, plodding along kind of aimlessly. Now that I've accumulated about 200+ cards, I started organizing them. And after I was done, I was a bit stunned at something:
Not counting the high numbered series, I need approximately 50 to sixty cards to complete each series. That is, except for the 5th series. For the run of cards numbered 375-440, I need only 16!!
There was absolutely no concerted effort on my part to focus on any one series. Yet, this distribution resulted after my random purchasing.
Is that breakdown typical of '59's? Is that 5th series more abundant on the street than the others? Or, is this simply a coincidence?
Nick, the cards in that number range do seem to be more plentiful with some exceptions. I think that since they are more available, that is why you were able to obtain a higher percentage of them.
I hope that you are enjoying your '59 set so far.

Hello. I'm brand new to the board and to PSA in general. About a month ago I decided to pick up the collecting of the 59 set after about 15-20 years. I decided to shoot for an 8 or better set, but it's going to be a long and expensive road ahead as I need the vast majority of the set (including all of the big guns).
Anyway, I thought I'd register and say hello. This thread has been a great read and although it seems to have died down a little, there's clearly a crazy amount of interest on eBay in these cards.
First of all, a huge welcome to the boards. You will find many very knowledgeable collectors here. I am happy that you posted here on the '59 Topps thread since this seems to be your area of interest. The 1959 Topps set is my #1 collecting interest as well.
Please tell us more about yourself and your '59 collecting interests (or other collecting interests for that matter). Do you have a start on the set? If so, do you have it registered on the Set Registry yet?
I do have a few available 1959 Topps PSA 8's. Pls email me at brett8@cox.net
Look forward to your posts here and also to hearing from you through email.
thanks, Don Johnson

Thanks for the response. A little more about me...I began collecting cards back in '81 when I was 10. I took an interest in vintage cards around 1985 and put together a 1963 Fleer set (minus the Adco ck & the checklist) and about 90% of a 1960 Topps set. Both of those, along with around 100 9-pocket pages of "star players" were stolen from my house in 1987. That sucked. So I started on a 1959 set around that time but things fell off when college, etc, hit shortly thereafter. I've always remembered the set well and recently I decided to get back into it after a short-lived run in game used memorabilia (I couldn't stomach the fakes & preposterous auction house policies). So about six weeks ago I decided to go back to work on the '59s that I enjoyed back in the day. I searched through the boxed up cards at my parents house and found my old red folder that had what I had, and unfortunately most of the cards were sub-PSA 8 (IMO). I made the decision to make a run at this in PSA 8 and up (although I may be adding PSA 7's that come back from PSA submits with the idea that I upgrade as I go along).
I read this thread for the first time back in mid-Feb and your posts & advice were a big help as I ramped up, so thanks Don. I also bookmarked your registry page as that was a great way for me to see the Pop of certain cards I was bidding on via eBay. I little loophole around having to join PSA to see the pop report, I guess, although now I've signed on so I have access of my own. The info in this thread was a huge help and I'm happy to be able to participate now.
So I basically started with nothing, and I'm up to around 18% of the set in PSA 8. It's a good start, but man do I have a long way to go. I did recently join the set registry as "OCD" in both the Master & Basic categories.
Being that I have so many holes to fill I suspect you've got some cards I may like, so I'll shoot you a note right now. Thanks for the offer.
Anyone have any comments on that COOP set being broken up & sold on eBay over the next ten or so weeks? They seem to go at a bit of a premium over other graded cards IMO, but man are some of those NICE.
Welcome. Don has been a great help to me on the 59's. Although I don't see me chasing the entire set any time soon I do grab some here and there. I mostly chase Hall of Famers and stars (Phillies for sure). Although I don't have a grade requirement or grading company I do try to find cards at least a six and those that are centered pretty well with decent corners and most little to no print dots. Anyhow Don should be a great help as this thread will prove. Good luck on the set and keep posting here.
Here's one I just bought after a few weeks with nothing new:
Congrats on that Simmons card....what a beauty!! PSA 9's are just so sweet.
Dan....
Thanks for your post. I did check out your set on the registry. I must say a very nice start....congrats!
I don't know what your budget is for working on the set, but there are some cards that will be very expensive. If you have been following the ebay auctions of COOP's cards, you will see some big dollars there on some of them. Of course, there are many that you should be able to acquire at very reasonable prices. Your idea of having some 7's until you can upgrade later is a good idea. You may want to target the tough cards in 7's for a fraction of the price of 8's in those cards. A PSA 7 is still a really nice card, IMO.
Of course, the beauty of collecting is that you can do it on your own timetable and however you want to go about it.
COOP (Joe Cooper) really put a fantastic set together. It seemed to be his only focus the last couple of years. He and I had quite a few transactions through ebay and off-line as well. I actually was surprised that he decided to break up his best set after all the effort he put into it. He has a second set on the registry as well. Anyway, I have been following the auctions of his cards by Mark (Outfield Sports) very closely. So far, the sales have been 'off the charts'. Whenever they get around to auctioning the Pierce AS card, the last card in the set, I fully expect it to exceed $2000.
Again, welcome to the boards and I hope that you post a lot on here.

Thanks again...I look forward to being a part of the '59 thread.
One quick question - is there something I don't know about #138 John Romano? An ungraded NRMT card just sold for $127!!! Item #190096757510 on eBay. Initially I thought it was a numerical error on the bid, but from what I can tell this was intentional as there were multiple bids. WTF???? Maybe I should put this whole thing back on hold??
This is just insane! There is nothing special about the Romano card. This is a classic case of two ebay bidders beating each other's brains out in a bidding war....of course, that is assuming they have any brains at all. The Romano is a $5 card sold raw NM on a good day.
This is a seller's dream where two bidders lose all common sense and just have to win the auction at all costs. That is just flat out unbelievable.
Maybe I will contact them and make them a heckuva deal on some raw '59's I have that average about NM.

Hi Dan My name is John I been collecting 1959 baseball for over 20 years I know the set as well as anyone. I have some 59's in psa 8's # 227 Smith # 257 Wagner #305 Raydon # 431 Douglas # 501 tiefenauer all of these cards have come from my own collection At this time I have the # 1 set on the registry so these 8's are high grade if your interested email me at nohjmac@aol.com
Don & John - I sent you both mails. Thanks for reaching out. And aconte - NICE looking card! I love (but don't have any) of those 9's!
And I'm glad it wasn't just me missing something on that crazy auction. I planned on bidding like $7 or so on it but watched it escalate and escalate and just couldn't believe it. I seriously wonder what the heck was going on with those two. I mean, if it was one of those 'tough to find centered' cards like Hunter, Repulski, Shantz or Stevens then I could certainly understand it, but there's just absolutely nothing special about that particular card.
Well, we'll see if I have any luck on the COOP cards that go off tonight. I pretty well got shellacked last Monday night on the first 65. In an act of frustration I (IMO) overpaid on one just so I could at least feel like I got one of the COOP cards. I'm bidding more aggressively tonight, but as you said Don these COOP cards seem to go off at a bit of a premium. The majority of the ones I've looked at seem to be really nicely centered, so perhaps the prices are right after all.
I know there was thread about this a while back but what IS the deal with the PSA 8 Koufax? Why has it seemingly increased by about a third in price of late? Bidding wars among set collectors?

Thanks, friends!
Nick
I hope that you are enjoying your '59 set so far.

Anyway, I thought I'd register and say hello. This thread has been a great read and although it seems to have died down a little, there's clearly a crazy amount of interest on eBay in these cards.
Regards,
Dan
First of all, a huge welcome to the boards. You will find many very knowledgeable collectors here. I am happy that you posted here on the '59 Topps thread since this seems to be your area of interest. The 1959 Topps set is my #1 collecting interest as well.
Please tell us more about yourself and your '59 collecting interests (or other collecting interests for that matter). Do you have a start on the set? If so, do you have it registered on the Set Registry yet?
I do have a few available 1959 Topps PSA 8's. Pls email me at brett8@cox.net
Look forward to your posts here and also to hearing from you through email.
thanks,
Don Johnson

Regards,
Dan
Welcome. Don has been a great help to me on the 59's. Although I don't see me chasing the entire set any time soon I do grab some here and there. I mostly chase Hall of
Famers and stars (Phillies for sure). Although I don't have a grade requirement or grading company I do try to find cards at least a six and those that are centered pretty
well with decent corners and most little to no print dots.
